My wanderings cover a period of nineteen years, during which I have not been able to do more than pierce these vast ranges, as one might stick a needle into a bolster, in many places ; for no one can lay claim to a really intimate knowledge of the Himalaya alone, as understood in the mountaineering sense at home. Zaidi2 Abstract Energy crisis has emerged as a serious issue all over the world in recent years. Pakistan is facing a similar crisis that has resulted in frequent power failures and load shedding throughout the country for past several years. The utilization of renewable energy resources may help reducing fossil fuel dependency of the country for power generation. There are various renewable energy options for Pakistan including solar, wind and hydropower. The objective of this study is to develop an approach that can be used to assess the run-of-river hydropower potential of Kunhar River using geospatial data and techniques. Kunhar River is a tributary of Jhelum River located in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province of Pakistan. Satellite data used in this study include ASTER Digital Elevation Model (DEM). Flow data are acquired from regional hydrologic gauges. Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) tools are used for processing the satellite images, delineation of watershed and stream network, and identification of potential sites for hydropower projects. This study will aid decision-makers in the energy sector to optimize the available resources in selecting the suitable sites for small hydropower plants with high power potential. The proposed approach can further be utilized to assess an overall hydropower potential of the country. The rapid change in global climate has given rise to many disasters that pose a severe threat to the human life, property and infrastructure. Disasters like floods, earthquakes, tsunamis, droughts, sediment disasters, avalanches, GLOFs, and cyclones with storm surges are some prominent manifestations of climate change phenomenon. Pakistan, which is ranked in the top ten countries that are the most vulnerable to climate change effects, started planning to safeguard and secure the life, land and property of its people in particular the poor, the vulnerable and the marginalized. However, recurring disasters since 2005 have provided the required stimuli for accelerating the efforts towards capacity building of the responsible agencies, which include federal, provincial, district governments, community organizations, NGOs and individuals. Prior to 2005, the West Pakistan National Calamities Act of 1958 was the available legal remedy that regulated the maintenance and restoration of order in areas affected by calamities and relief against such calamities. -

In countries like Pakistan where different weather conditions exist, the effects of climate change can be more crucial. Generally, the climate changes are considered in terms of global warming i.e. increase in the average temperature of earth’s near surface air. The global warming can have a strong impact on river flows in Pakistan. This may be due to the melting of snow and glaciers at a higher rate and changes in precipitation patterns. Glaciers in Pakistan cover about 13,680 km2 which is 13% of the mountainous regions of the Upper Indus Basin. Glacier and Snowmelt water from these glaciers contributes significantly to the river flows in Pakistan. Due to climate change, the changes in temperature and the amount of precipitation could have diversified effects on river flows of arid and semi-arid regions of Pakistan. This paper reviews the existing research studies on climate change impact on water resources of Pakistan. The past trend of river flows in Pakistan has been discussed with respect to the available data. Further, different projections about future climate changes in terms of glacier melting & changes in temperature and precipitation have also been taken into consideration in order to qualitatively assess the future trend of river flows in Pakistan. -

210 THE AMERICAN ALPINE JOURNAL Chumathang, Mahadev and Chokul, Eastern Ladakh. A 16-member Indian Army team led by Lieutenant Colonel J.N. Goel left Leh on July 26. They set up two camps beyond Base Camp. Nine members climbed Chumathang (20,300 feet) and another six climbed Mahadev (20,740 feet). Then seven members climbed Chokul (21,600 feet) on August 8 via the 2%-mile-long Chokul Glacier and the east and south ridges. Chokul had been unsuccessfully attempted in 1946 and 1947 by British parties. KAMAL K. GUHA, Himalayan Club Pakistan K 12. The Kyoto University Karakoram Expedition to K 12 was composed of Seiichi Kanayama, Shinichi Takagi, Tsutomu Ito, Satoshi Oku, Pakistani Second Lieutenant Zaffar Iqbal as liaison officer and me as leader. On July 25 we set up Base Camp at 15,425 feet on the moraine on the right bank of the Grachmolumba Glacier. Camp I was at 17,000 feet and Camp II at 18,700 feet. After crossing a great crevasse using a rope ladder, we reached a co1 northwest of K 12. Camp III was at 20,350 feet and Camp IV at 23,000 feet on the ridge. On August 30 Takagi and Ito started from Camp IV and reached the summit of K 12 (24,503 feet) at 5:40 P.M. They descended to 23,000 feet that night for a bivouac, where they were trapped by bad weather the next day. They transmitted this information to me at Camp II by walkie- talkie. On September 1 they began the descent. -

PAKISTAN WATER AND POWER DEVELOPMENT AUTHORITY (April 2011) April 2011 www.wapda.gov.pk PREFACE Energy and water are the prime movers of human life. Though deficient in oil and gas, Pakistan has abundant water and other energy sources like hydel power, coal, wind and solar power. The country situated between the Arabian Sea and the Himalayas, Hindukush and Karakoram Ranges has great political, economic and strategic importance. The total primary energy use in Pakistan amounted to 60 million tons of oil equivalent (mtoe) in 2006-07. The annual growth of primary energy supplies and their per capita availability during the last 10 years has increased by nearly 50%. The per capita availability now stands at 0.372 toe which is very low compared to 8 toe for USA for example. The World Bank estimates that worldwide electricity production in percentage for coal is 40, gas 19, nuclear 16, hydro 16 and oil 7. Pakistan meets its energy requirement around 41% by indigenous gas, 19% by oil, and 37% by hydro electricity. Coal and nuclear contribution to energy supply is limited to 0.16% and 2.84% respectively with a vast potential for growth. The Water and Power Development Authority (WAPDA) is vigorously carrying out feasibility studies and engineering designs for various hydropower projects with accumulative generation capacity of more than 25000 MW. Most of these studies are at an advance stage of completion. After the completion of these projects the installed capacity would rise to around 42000 MW by the end of the year 2020. Pakistan has been blessed with ample water resources but could store only 13% of the annual flow of its rivers.
