Dan-Gun Dan-Gun is named after the holy Dan-Gun, the legendary founder of Korea in the year of 2333 B.C. The history of the Dan-Gun Dangun Wanggeom was the legendary founder of Gojoseon, the first kingdom of Korea, in present-day Liaoning, Manchuria, and the Korean Peninsula. He is said to be the grandson of the god of heaven, and to have founded the kingdom in 2333 BC. Although the term Dangun commonly refers to the founder, some believe it was a title used by all rulers of Gojoseon, and that Wanggeom was the proper name of the founder. Dangun’s ancestry begins with his grandfather Hwanin, the “Lord of Heaven” (a name which also appears in Indian Buddhist texts). Hwanin had a son Hwanung who yearned to live on the earth among the valleys and the mountains. Hwanin permitted Hwanung and 3000 followers to descend onto Baekdu Mountain, then called Taebaek Mountain, where Hwanung founded Sinsi (“City of God”). Along with his ministers of clouds, rain, and wind, he instituted laws and moral codes and taught humans various arts, medicine, and agriculture. One day both a bear and a tiger came to Hwanung’s residence in prayer and asked to be transformed into humans. The god agreed to this gift but on the condition that they remain out of the sun for 100 days and eat only a sacred bunch of mug- worts and 20 garlic cloves. To this the animals agreed and followed his advice. The tiger was unable to keep up with the conditions, but the bear – a female called Ung- nyo – after only 21 days was transformed into a woman. -

Alawi 1 Hayla Alawi Pamela J Mackintosh Undergraduate Research Award May 8th, 2020 Jeju Island, the Three Clans Myth, and Women Divers: Female Importance in Jeju’s Cultural History Introduction Jeju1 Island, officially the Jeju Special Self-Governing Province, lies 90 kilometers off the southern coast of the Korean peninsula and forms a province of South Korea. It is an interesting place, considered by many historians to be unique from mainland Korea before it was absorbed into the larger state, with fascinating cultural phenomena and a murky past. Although there is not much scholarship on the early history of Jeju2 and little in the written record about the island, it is possible to theorize what early Jeju cultural history may have looked like through a combined examination of the island’s mythology and modern-day culture. To gain a greater understanding of what early Jeju human culture may have looked like, I will examine the Myth of the Three Clans of Jeju Island, Jeju’s most prominent foundation myth. It is not the only foundation myth originating from the Korean Peninsula, but it is unique in that it features a key reversal between the roles of men and women in a narrative that is otherwise similar to other Korean foundation myths, the rest of which are found on mainland Korea. Part 1:Peace and Unification Q1 A138th On June 25th the KPA army crossed the 38th parallel with tanks and artillery and quickly started to overrun South Korea. The southern ROK forces were not as well for war and quickly. The North Koreans would have probably secured the peninsula if UN forces had not intervened. The US interest in Korea was mostly to keep Japan secure and limit the USSR’s. Initially, UN forces were driven back until they occupied only a small of the peninsula in South Korea. Eventually, the UN forces were able to the tide and almost took control of the entire peninsula until China decided to 1 The Korean Armistice Agreement was between the United Nations Command, the Korean People’s Army for North Korea and the Chinese People’s Volunteer Army. The Armistice Agreement supposed to be drafted soon after the Armistice Agreement was signed. However, a peace treaty still has not been reached and North and South Korea are still technically at war. Rhee wanted to completely unify the peninsula but would be unable to do so without the support of the UN forces. Kim Il-Sung also did not want to sign an armistice, to cease. Another provision in the Q3 Armistice was the swapping of prisoners of war. A3 Korean The Joint Security Area was established as the place for negotiation to take place and it is the only place that the North Korean and UNC forces meet face to face. -

Korea on Russian Maps of 17th-19th Century I Vladimir S. Kusov (Moscow State University) <Abstract> Beginning of the report is about a particularity of the History of Russian Cartography. For the first time Korea appears on a Russian geographic drawing dated 1673. One of these drawings has the image of the Korea capital. The name of the capial is "Uvonsan" annd it shown to be on the east coast of the "Ocean". Russian drawings of the 17th century have only such a topon:ym for this water feature. There are few Russian maps with the image of Korea in the 18th century. On these maps the East Sea is usually named "Korea Sea". Russian field cartographic surveys of this region began in 19th century. These Russian sea maps of Korea dated 1805 and 1854 are being analyzed in their geometric and toponymic relations. Intensive development of Russian cartography of the Korean land mass is seen toward the end of 19th century. The map published in 1900 by the Ministry of Finance exemplifies the high technical level of mapping of that period. The maximum number of Russian maps of Korea was printed in 1904. Examples are included. Foreign Teacher Networks and Community Folklore in Sout
Narrating Waegook Identity: Building Transitory Foreign-Teacher Community through Folklore in the Republic of Korea by © Kelly Roubo A thesis submitted to the School of Graduate Studies in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Folklore Memorial University of Newfoundland October 15, 2019 Abstract With increasing global mobility, itinerant expatriate groups – whether of teachers, retirees, students, or backpackers – constitute transitory folk groups easily overlooked by folklore studies. This thesis is an ethnographic study of a transient folk group of foreign teachers in Suncheon, Republic of Korea, and of how narratives about their experiences inform their sense of identity within that community. My observations of such groups in the Republic of Korea include working as a foreign English teacher in the 1990s, conducting fieldwork as a participant-observer from 2006-2008, and through additional research in 2017-2018 via the Internet. As a former foreign teacher, this work is auto-ethnographic in nature, as my time in Korea has informed not only my approach to this research, but who I am today. Alan Dundes famously suggested a folk group may be comprised of as few as two people (1965, 2). Folk groups can also coalesce for brief periods, even the duration of a conversation, wherein the content of narratives facilitates construction of shared identity, as in the “transitory community” of foreign teachers I studied. With little else in common, foreign teachers share narratives – of their work, the challenges they face, and personal experiences of life abroad. This creates bonds and equips them with vernacular knowledge specific to that community. -

Young people and their families come here from over 175 countries and speak more than 140 languages. Newly arriving families face many difficult challenges in adapting to the demands of their new environment, and teenagers are no exception. Engaging these students, helping them overcome obstacles and participate fully in earning a high school diploma in a timely manner are all important objectives of the New York City Department of Education. School staff face challenges as well in providing a smooth transition between the student’s native country and their new environment here in the United States. Therefore, school officials must be provided with the proper tools to understand and translate the knowledge and skills acquired in students’ home countries in order to be able to properly place students in the appropriate grade and courses in their new school. Given the various differences between the systems used around the world, assessing educational credentials can be a daunting process. Evaluating Foreign Transcripts: The A-Z Manual provides guidelines specifically to support staff in completing this process. We all share the goal of high academic achievement for young people in this city – whether they were born here or arrived yesterday. -
