We must concede the ancients their place. But their place is not simply back there, in a sepa- rate and foreign country; it is assimilated in ourselves, and resurrected into an ever-changing present. –David Lowenthal, The Past is a Foreign Country1 It is difficult to square the rhetoric about the cur- rent “crisis” in the humanities with the abundant, if anecdotal, evidence that Greco-Roman antiquity continues to thrive in the popular imagination.     projects and publications Dædalus Explores “What’s New about the Old” The collection explores new developments in the classics that are reshaping our understanding of the ancient world–and its relevance to today ascination with Greco-Roman culture continues to drive academic curricula and popular interest, in spite of recent Fdata signaling a decline in the study of the humanities. New developments in the study of the ancient world–integrat- ing methodological, philosophical, and technological advances–have, in some cases, revolutionized our understanding of the past, opening up a new realm of classical studies for the twenty-first century. This period of discovery is due in large part to a new generation of classicists who are reshaping our access to and understanding of Greco-Roman culture. Innova- tive, multidisciplinary approaches, often applying cut- ting-edge science and technology to the study of the an- cient world, are yielding new questions and altering our engagement with the past. For example, not only have novel technologies enabled the discovery of new literary papyri, but methodological changes have altered which texts scholars might use to piece together ancient world- views. This “new science of antiquity”–including mul- tispectral imaging, 3D laser scanning, and bioarchaeol- ogy–is enabling researchers to reconstruct previously inaccessible data and documents, revealing, for exam- ple, mysteries about ancient ecosystems and decipher- ing papyri carbonized during the eruption of Vesuvius. In the Spring 2016 issue of Dædalus, guest editor Matthew S. Jh. v. Chr. entstand in der Nähe des ehrwürdigen Heiligtums einer Fruchtbarkeits- und Kriegsgöttin, die mit der griechischen Aphrodite identifiziert wurde, eine kleine und so unbedeutende Siedlung, daß sie von keinem hellenistischen Historiker oder Geo­ graphen erwähnt wird, ja so unbedeutend, daß wir nicht einmal wissen, wann sie den Status einer freien Bürgergemeinde erlangte.1 Im 2. Jh. v. Chr. war sie auf jeden Fall eine unabhängige Polis, die mit der Nachbarstadt Plarasa eine völkerrechtliche Verbindung einging. Aphrodisias und Plarasa bildeten eine Sympolitie.2 Aphrodisias hatte bei der Wahl seiner Verbündeten wäh­ rend der Wirren der späten Römischen Republik eine glückliche Hand.3 Während der Kriege zwischen Sulla und Mithridates unterstützte es Sulla, später den künftigen Augustus. Die Aus­ strahlung des Heiligtums der Aphrodite verhalf dieser Gemeinde zu einer großen Blüte. Aphrodisias verdankte dem Heiligtum der Aphrodite nicht nur seinen Namen, sondern auch seine bloße Existenz, seinen Ruhm, zum Teil seinen Reichtum und seine privilegierte Stellung. Man könnte erwarten, daß Aphrodite auch die primäre Komponente der kollektiven Identität der Aphrodisieis darstellen würde. Wenn ein Bürger von Aphrodisias im Ausland auch nur seinen Namen nartnte - und zum Namen einer antiken Person gehört auch das Ethnikon (Aphrodisieus) - erinnerte er den fremden Gesprächspartner daran, daß er ein Bürger der Stadt der Aphrodite war. Die Wahrnehmung einer Gemeinde durch die Außenstehenden ist ein wich­ tiger Aspekt von Identität, ein weiterer die Selbstdarstellung.

Having said that, please note that the term „Byzantine‟ is one that was not used in the time of the Empire. They referred to themselves as Romans. The Writing On The Wall: Inscriptions And Memory In The Temples Of Late Antique Greece And Asia Minor Abstract This dissertation documents late antique (fourth to seventh century CE) Christian responses to earlier, pagan inscriptions at sanctuaries, as seen in the archaeological record. I argue that Christians in Greece and Asia Minor neither ignored nor unthinkingly destroyed older inscriptions, but rather were generally tolerant toward these legible reminders of the pagan past, selectively editing them only occasionally. In order to clarify the types of inscriptions that Christians encountered on temple walls and architraves, I have assembled the first catalog of inscriptions on temples, which er veals that the majority of texts inscribed on sacred structures between the seventh century BCE and the third century CE were, counterintuitively, not about religion, but rather civic matters: political privileges, economic/territorial rights, and elite social structures.
