    Jewish Perspectives on Reproductive Realities By Rabbi Lori Koffman, NCJW Board Director and Chair of NCJW’s Reproductive Health, Rights and Justice Initiative A note on the content below: We acknowledge that this document invokes heavily gendered language due to the prevailing historic male voices in Jewish rabbinic and biblical perspectives, and the fact that Hebrew (the language in which these laws originated) is a gendered language. We also recognize some of these perspectives might be in contradiction with one another and with some of NCJW’s approaches to the issues of reproductive health, rights, and justice. Background Family planning has been discussed in Judaism for several thousand years. From the earliest of the ‘sages’ until today, a range of opinions has existed — opinions which can be in tension with one another and are constantly evolving. Historically these discussions have assumed that sexual intimacy happens within the framework of heterosexual marriage. A few fundamental Jewish tenets underlie any discussion of Jewish views on reproductive realities. • Protecting an existing life is paramount, even when it means a Jew must violate the most sacred laws.1 • Judaism is decidedly ‘pro-natalist,’ and strongly encourages having children. The duty of procreation is based on one of the earliest and often repeated obligations of the Torah, ‘pru u’rvu’, 2 to be ‘fruitful and multiply.’ This fundamental obligation in the Jewish tradition is technically considered only to apply to males. Of course, Jewish attitudes toward procreation have not been shaped by Jewish law alone, but have been influenced by the historic communal trauma (such as the Holocaust) and the subsequent yearning of some Jews to rebuild community through Jewish population growth.

    RABBI NORMAN LAMM TERUMAH THE JEWISH CENTER MARCH 2, 1968 "LIVING UP TO YOUR IMAGE" We read in this morning's Sidra of the instructions given to Moses to build the Tabernacle. Amongst other things, he is commanded to build the Ark, containing the Tablets of the Law. This aron, Moses is told, should be made of wood overlaid with zahav tahor, pure gold, both on the inside and the outside of the Ark: mi-bayit u-mi-hutz tetzapenu. Our Rabbis (Yoma 72b) found in this apparently mundane law, a principle of great moral significance. Rava said: from this we learn that kol talmid bakham she^in tokho ke'varo eino talmid bakham, a scholar whose inner life does not correspond to his outer appearances is not an authentic scholar. The Ark or aron, as the repository of the Tablets of the Law, is a symbol of a talmid bakham, a student of the Law. The zahav tahor, pure gold, repre- sents the purity of character. And the requirement that this gold be placed mi-bayit u-mi-hutz, both within and without the Ark, in- dicates the principle that a true scholar must live in such a manner that he always be tokho keTvaro, alike inwardly and outwardly. Thus, our Rabbis saw in our verse a plea for integrity of character, a warning against a cleavage between theory and practice, against a discontinuity between inwardness and outwardness, against a clash between inner reality and outer appearance. A real Jew must always be tokho keTvaro. -2- Now that sounds like a truism; but it is nothing of the sort.

Tradition teaches that this “service” is prayer. It is written, serving Him with all you heart and soul (Deut. 2:13), about which the Sages said, “What is service of the heart? Prayer.” The number of prayers is not fixed in the Torah, nor is their format, and neither the Torah prescribes a fixed time for prayer. Women and slaves are therefore obligated to pray, since it is a positive commandment without a fixed time. Rather, this commandment obligates each person to pray, supplicate, and praise the Holy One, blessed be He, to the best of his ability every day; to then request and plead for what he needs; and after that praise and thank God for all the He has showered on him.1” According to Maimonides, both men and women are obligated in the Mitsva of prayer.

We started this journal out of curiosity - curiosity over what our fellow undergraduate students are writing about and researching regarding Judaic topics. What new ideas are people proposing on Halakha and Tanakh, what observations are people making about Jewish history, what arguments are people having regarding Jewish philosophy? What is our generation thinking about Judaism? In publishing undergraduates’ Judaically related essays and providing people with a forum to share their research with a broader community, we want to get people talking. We want to empower students to share their ideas. We want to foster conversations between undergraduates with diverse perspectives with the hope of creating a broader understanding of Judaism as a whole. This 2019 Winter-Spring issue of Limda includes nine essays written on a variety of topics, ranging from Jewish history to language to philosophy to Halakha to Tanakh to Israel. We kick off with Pamela Brenner’s “K erakheym Ov Al Bonim : Tevye’s Quotations Revisited” in which we are taken on a journey of analysis through the character of Tevye the Dairyman and his improper - or proper? - use of Biblical quotations. We then feature Arielle Solomon’s “R ebecca: The Guardian of Bloodline and Covenant ,” which offers a refreshing and innovative commentary on the Biblical Rebecca’s role in the founding of the Jewish People.
