11 12 Years Ago.. Thirty Years Ago… The number of members at the Club was 463. Commodore Norm Baxter suggested it would be “beneficial” to seek more members to increase funds to pay for the land. Maintenance and refurbishing included new bulletin boards, the sound treatment of the Longhouse roof and chain link fencing to prevent trespassing and vandalism. Speaking of vandalism…someone had taken black pain and written “graffito” all over the ceramic tile in the ladies’ shower. Port Captain Bill Jeffries reported that the neighbors were having trouble sleeping because of the “rattling in the still of the night” and asked members to secure their rigging. According to ORF Fleet Captain Watson Goldsmith, the Race Committee was lost. Five boats from the ORF set off to find the boat aimlessly hovering some distance off a red marker in Kahana Bay with a flooded head and no provisions aboard. Apparently, they spent five hours in the open sea. No mention was made of a race or who might have won it. Twenty Years Ago… Vice Commodore Joe Cochran thanked the Club Ops Committee for their hard work. Those included were Carol Horton, Ramona Robertson, Nancy Ashford, Honey Corstorphine, Fred Farrell, Skip Winterbottom, Tom Parker, Ken Brockman and Club Manager Ruth Chatterton. Some accomplishments were a floating pier replacement, hosting the Pacific Cup, and purchasing new lawn furniture. The Deckhands hosted the Great American Bunco Night that included a Yankee Doodle Dandy dinner prior to the game. Carol Koza and Beanie Carpenter were the hostesses. The locker was stocking up for the holidays. You could purchase a KYC sweatshirt in , peach, turqoise, white, navy or red. Tom Teruya took first place in the Golf Fleet event. Sally and Ken Brockman, Maggie and Chuck Gustin and Tom Stoddard also par - ticipated. “Hooked on Country” was a great success. The scene created was a “hoosegow,” the cowboys were “waiting at the fence” and Miss Starlett and her “leggy girls were waiting with great expectation for whatever the night might bring. Those girls included Marge Rogers, Carol Horton, Frannie Haws, Ramona Robertson and Sharyn Starr. Joe Starr and Spotswood Robertson were part of the posse. Thanks to Marge Rogers for her great mural and to Carol Horton for organizing the event. The winners of the September Tennis Tournament were Andy and Connie Lopez, 2nd place went to Paul McCully, Don McSheehy and Jan Pollock. Carol Herlich and John Waidelich were third. Ten Years Ago… Rear Commodore Charlie Stone, a power boater, had survived the racing season and had fun doing it. He noted, though, that “stuff” was piling up in dry storage and advised moving it “SOON.” The El Toro shed was nearing completion. Chief Honcho was Aaron Phillips. Port Captain Harvey Minsky was battling the “NO STICKER, NO STALL OR MOORING” RULE. He suggested that anyone who had a vessel they were not using, donate it to Joe Starr or Jim Nash for youth sailing groups. Cy Gillette and Kim Ickler updated the History of Kaneohe Yacht Club originally produced by Lucille Brundage in 1964. The book was then made available to all members in good standing. “Carl Meier and Elaine Bowers racked up the highest scores” to win the Clare Lang Tournament. New Fleet members Mike and Janet Hughs participated. Afterward, members and guests dined on complimentary steaks and potatoes in the Longhouse. Carl Meier and Har - vey Luke grilled the meat perfectly, and guests brought side dishes for a terrific spread. Pat Meier coordinated the event. Members were looking forward the Tommy Collins Tournament in November and the Christmas Party to be held at Peter and Lois Nottage’s home. First Place (6-9 years) in the Keiki Bulkhead Fishing Tournament went to Cody Meek, who caught a 1½-pound hammerhead. First place (0-5 years) went to Alex Kemp and his 1¾-pound hammerhead. Doug Gammon was first among ten to twelve year olds with a 4- pound fish. Other notable catches were a ¾ pound eel and a 1-pound papio. Joe and Mary Kirby were in charge of the tourna - ment. Shawn Kirley was ahead in Season’s Points and expected be the leading fisherman for the year. A well-organized work party brought down the El Toro shed and rebuilt it. Among the volunteers mentioned were Charlie Stone, Ricky Osborne, Bill Riddle, Aaron Phillips, Bob Hurd, Jim Gammon, John Myrdal, Jim Nash, Cy Gillette, Jim Nash, Mark Denzer and Dave Brown. It was noted that “at the other end of the shed, small strange pyramids were uncovered indicating that an early Mayan or Aztec culture may have predated Hawaiians in Kaneohe.” Repairs to the shed were budgeted at $10,000. Fast Forward, with Chuck Cotton and Bill Riddle, won the ORF Race to Molokai. Ho`onanea won the race from Molokai to Kaneohe. Crews celebrated with an Awards’ Banquet on Saturday night and a Golf Tournament on Sunday. Jim Nash caught the winning fish dur - ing the Molokai Return Race. John and Danielle Myrdal, who were currently campaigning for the 2000 Olympics in Sydney, were on their way here to conduct a Lasar Seminar for the juniors and others interested in learning Lasar and Lasar Radial sailing. Plans were being made to honor Commodore and Mrs. Graham “Kiwi” Albrecht at the Commodore’s Ball on December 4.

13 A note from Director Andy Bates This is my final two months on the Board of Directors , and I wanted to take this opportunity to “thank” all of you who voted for me (!), particularly the Tennis Fleet , and all of you who supported the projects I worked on while serving these past three years. I wanted to make a couple of observations before leaving the Board that may be of interest to some of the members who have not been active in the running of the Club during the past few years. The Club has been slowly moving towards becoming a social club and away from being an active Yacht Club that proactively adheres to and sets policy that supports the original Charter of Incorporation. This will continue to be contentious, and is at the heart of most of the disagreements that occur related to money, space utilization, and membership. The rapid recent increase in club membership, requiring a waiting list now , over the past five years has created a new set of infrastruc - ture issues that will require innovative solutions in the future : parking, more room for boats, major infrastructure repairs, etc. Change is hard for most people; however, there will be more changes in the future. The Board of Directors and the working committees that sup - port the Board will need the active support and encouragement of the membership in order to overcome a small but vocal minority that opposes change at every juncture. As we all think about the future, in what looks to be leaner times , we need to consider how we all can contribute to maintaining the quality of life at Kaneohe Yacht Club. If indeed we want to preserve what we have now , we will have to put a lot more effort in to vol - unteerism. It has been a privilege and honor to serve the membership for the past three years. I look forward to serving as a volunteer in the years ahead. Mahalo, Andy Bates, Director

14 Come one.. Come All! to the KYC Bulkhead Sale

Have you been accumulating a lot of “stuff” in your garage, on your patio, in your yard, in your boat locker, waiting for just the right time to sell it, maybe on Craig’s List or on E-Bay? Wait no longer. On November 22, 2008, KYC will host what we hope will be the biggest sale in its history. Open to all KYC members, there will be the usual garage-yard-patio-sale stuff, and in addition we will welcome crafters, collectables, plants, furniture, as well as our many entrepreneurs and their lines of clothing, jewelry and services. We urge anyone with a boat for sale to bring it up to designated areas at the bulkhead in the water or on a trailer. Got a car for sale? You’re welcome to bring it , also. As in the past, proceeds from the rental of display tables, tents and slips will be donated to the Kaneohe Foundation, a worth - while and important organization to all our aspiring young sailors. All income generated from the sale of items will remain with the seller. Anyone who simply wants to get rid of excess “stuff” without taking the time to sell it himself is welcome to donate it to a juniors’ table, with proceeds going to the Junior Sailing Program. In spite of rising costs everywhere, we have kept the rental fee at $10 per seller. For small businesses such as clothiers, jewelry, etc., we ask an additional 10% of sales, all donated to the Foundation. Available for your choice will be individual tables, two 10 x 10 tents, a 20 x 20 tent and a 10 x 20 tent, as well as spaces on the lawn, in the water and in the bulkhead parking area. For those who would like to show off their cooking skills, as we traditionally do on the July 4, we will have a dessert contest. After the judging, proceeds from the sale of these yummies will go to the Foundation . The office will be accepting entries starting November 1. Sign up early for the best location. If you have any questions, give the of - fice a call at 247-4121. Sound like fun? Come join us from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. either as a seller or a buyer (or both). You have nothing to lose, everything to gain and with the holidays right around the corner, you could possibly pick up a few bargain gifts at KYC’s giant Bulkhead Sale, a super flea market without the fleas! Mark your calendars…see you on November 22 !
