Games: Predictions, Free Software, and Titles Developed on GNU/Linux Published on Tux Machines (http://www.tuxmachines.org) Home > content > Games: Predictions, Free Software, and Titles Developed on GNU/Linux Games: Predictions, Free Software, and Titles Developed on GNU/Linux By Roy Schestowitz Created 24/02/2021 - 8:52pm Submitted by Roy Schestowitz on Wednesday 24th of February 2021 08:52:23 PM Filed under Gaming [1] Thrilling Linux Gaming Predictions for 2021 - Boiling Steam [2] Last week we reached out to the community at large with a simple question: What do you predict will happen in the world of Linux Gaming by the end of 2021? To make things a little more fun, we asked everyone to limit their Linux Gaming predictions to 5 items, and be as specific as possible as to what they expect to occur. We also asked everyone to work on their predictions individually to avoid any potential bias. Now, we are sharing with you all the predictions we received, from quite a few places across the world as you can see from the below map. The Linux Gaming Community knows no frontiers. Team Cherry upgrade the excellent Hollow Knight with Vulkan for Linux | GamingOnLinux[3] Team Cherry have given their excellent action-platformer metroidvania Hollow Knight a bit of an upgrade, which you can test out on Steam in a fresh Beta test. Not played it before? You're missing out. Hollow Knight is a classically styled 2D action adventure across a vast interconnected world. Explore twisting caverns, ancient cities and deadly wastes; battle tainted creatures and befriend bizarre bugs; and solve ancient mysteries at the kingdom's heart. OpenLoco is a free and open source re-implementation of Chris Sawyer's Locomotion | GamingOnLinux[4] Just like there's the awesome OpenTTD for fans of Transport Tycoon Deluxe, there's also OpenLoco for players who want to play through the classic Locomotion. Not a project we've covered here before it seems, so we're making that right today. Originally released back in 2004, it's actually a spiritual successor to Transport Tycoon but it was not as loved due to various problems with the original release. Perhaps though it can have a new life thanks to OpenLoco. VRWorkout is a free and open source VR fitness rhythm game [5] Well, that's certainly one way to get a bit more exercise in. Whatever helps right? No judgement here, I could probably do with a little more myself? It's built with the free and open source game engine Godot Engine, so not only is the source code open for the game itself it's properly open for anyone to put it together from the source and will remain so. Speaking about VRWorkout to us on Twitter, the developer mentioned they actually do develop for it on Linux but they use a Quest headset not supported on Linux so they have to work with that on Windows. Perhaps though, in time, Monado might break down that barrier. Free and open source voxel game engine Minetest 5.4 is out, makes mods easier for users | GamingOnLinux[6] Minetest, the Minecraft-like voxel game engine (and a basic game that comes with it) has a big new release out with Minetest 5.4.0 and it's worth trying again. As we covered before during the Release Candidate stage, one of the big features for users in this release is vastly easier modding with both small mod packs and entire games. Minetest had a way to browse and download them all directly in the game for a while, but now it will also actually download all the dependencies mods need - making it vastly easier to get what you want and then into a game. No more downloading one mod, then finding all the individual bits it needs. This game was originally based on minetest_game, minus a couple GitHub: VanessaE of mods that I don't like, with a number of minor things changed, and a number of extra mods added on. Since then, IRC: VanessaE many things have changed - while much of the base game is still the same, some stuff is different, and many more mods In-game: have been added. Many of the mods contained in this game have been tweaked from their deault states. Mods are VanessaEzekowitz generally kept up-to-date, and from time to time, if an interesting feature pops up in minetest_game, I may port that over also. Website This game is in use on my Creative server and my Survival server. Both servers have a few extra mods installed for their specific needs, but should give you a pretty good idea nonetheless.

  • OFELIA Bridge Setup
Bridging Devices onto the OFELIA Testbed David R Newman December 10, 2013 1 Introduction The OFELIA testbed makes it possible to bridge devices onto slices created via an island's Expedient site. This document will provide instructions on how to bridge both Linux and Windows devices. OpenVPN is the best suited application for setting up an Ethernet bridge from a Linux virtual machine on the OFELIA testbed. It can be installed as a server package on most Linux distributions and as a client on most Linux and Windows distributions. OpenVPN's Linux instructions on how to do setup an Ethernet bridge using OpenVPN can be found at: http://openvpn.net/index.php/open-source/documentation/miscellaneous/76-ethernet-bridging.html This guide is an adaptation of these instructions for setting up an Ethernet bridge to an OFELIA island virtual machine. It assumes that you have already: 1. Created your own OFELIA account. 2. Connected to the OFELIA testbed network over VPN. 3. Created a project through an OFELIA island's Expedient website . 4. Added a slice to that project. 5. Created a couple of virtual machines on the OFELIA island's virtual machine servers. 6. Congured a owspace connecting together these virtual machines with one or more switches. Section 2 describes the project, test slice and owspace used as an exemplar in this guide. If you need help getting to a similar point follow the instructions at: https://alpha.fp7-ofelia.eu/doc/index.php/Working_with_the_OFELIA_Control_Framework Section 3 describes how to generate the server-side conguration for Ethernet bridging and section 4 how to generate the client-side conguration.

Dear Open Source Yearbook reader, The “open source” label was created back in 1998, not long after I got my start in tech publishing [1]. Fast forward to late 2014, when I was thinking about how much open source technologies, commu- nities, and business models have changed since 1998. I realized that there was no easy way—like a yearbook—to thumb through tech history to get a feel for open source. Sure, you can flip through the virtual pages of a Google search and read the “Best of” lists collected by a variety of technical publications and writers, much like you can thumb through newspapers from the 1980s to see the how big we wore our shoulder pads, neon clothing, and hair back then. But neither research method is particularly efficient, nor do they provide snapshots that show diversity within communities and moments of time. The idea behind the Open Source Yearbook is to collaborate with open source communities to collect a diverse range of stories from the year.

  • Artificial Intelligence for the Openttd Game
Technical University of Denmark Department of Informatics and Mathematical Modeling Master Thesis Artificial Intelligence for the OpenTTD Game Author: Supervisor: Maciej Wisniewski Dr. Carsten Witt Kongens Lyngby 2011 IMM-M.Sc.-2011-56 Technical University of Denmark Informatics and Mathematical Modelling Building 321, DK-2800 Kongens Lyngby, Denmark Phone +45 45253351, Fax +45 45882673 [email protected] www.imm.dtu.dk IMM-M.Sc.: ISSN 0909-3192 Abstract This master thesis project report is a result of an analysis of artificial intelligence applications in the field of transport management, focusing on optimal economic strategy and based on the example of OpenTTD, a simulation game. During this analysis a custom artificial intelligent agent has been designed and implemented for this game. OpenTTD is a simulation game available for free on its website, as an open-source project. The objective of the game is to create and manage your own transport company and potentially achieve the best performance company ratings. The project presented had several specified aims. In the beginning the author gives a brief game description and describes related problems which are solvable through the usage of knowledge from the field of artificial intelligence. In the next chapters an analysis of human behaviors, playing strategies and a typical human approach to the game is presented. The game API and artificial intelligence implementation language Squirrel are investigated and learned. Based on the gained knowledge existing artificial intelligence implementations and their designs are analyzed and described. Comparison classes and properties for categorization of artificial players are determined. Using these results and the gathered knowledge an artificial intelligence called SPRING is im- plemented and presented.

  • Framework for Real-Time Editing of Endless Procedural Terrains
Framework for Real-Time Editing of Endless Procedural Terrains Johan Klokkhammer Helsing Master of Science in Computer Science Submission date: July 2014 Supervisor: Anne Cathrine Elster, IDI Norwegian University of Science and Technology Department of Computer and Information Science Problem description Game developers commonly re-implement terrain generating code for each project they are working on, thus using up valuable development time. Furthermore, terrain generating code is often written in compiled languages, and this usually requires the code to be recompiled and the application relaunched each time a change has been made to the generator. Games and other virtual environments often use terrains generated using the implicit procedural techniques of Perlin and Musgrave. These techniques have also been applied to heightmap-generating software and 3D-modeling software. Such programs commonly offer a node editor letting the user visually edit an expression tree consisting of common procedural algorithms and mathematical functions. The results of the changes can often be viewed in real time. These packages, however, do not let you run the generation on the client. A heightmap has to be generated in its entirety first; and can then be imported by the game or application as a non-procedural model. Hence, many of the desirable properties of procedural generation are lost in the process, such as the ability to generate infinite worlds or a new world each time a game is started. The goal of this project is to combine the ease of use of visually editing an expression tree in a node editor with the ability to generate terrain on demand at the player's computer.
