  • Raphaël Lutard on the Starting Line of Mini-Transat La Boulangère 2019
RAPHAËL LUTARD ON THE STARTING LINE OF MINI-TRANSAT LA BOULANGÈRE 2019 MINI 6.50 ARKEMA 3: A FLYING LABORATORY It is often said that the Mini class is an ocean racing laboratory in which technologies are developed that are later rolled out on a larger scale. The Mini 6.50 Arkema 3 prototype, built by Lalou Multi and launched in 2016, is a perfect example of this. The hull and the deck of this 6.5 m boat were manufactured entirely from a recyclable thermoplastic composite, thanks to the Elium® resin from Arkema, infused with carbon fiber. A technological feat and a world first in boat building. This was made possible thanks to a special relationship between the Lalou Multi team (small business run by Lalou Roucayrol specializing in ocean racing) and their partner Arkema (a leading specialty chemicals and advanced materials company), who share the same values of transmission, innovation, technological development, and performance. Other products that were successfully tried and tested on the Multi 50 Arkema have been retained, e.g. the Bostik® structural adhesives and the Altuglas® ShieldUp® acrylic glass. Plenty of other novel features can be seen on the Mini 6.50 Arkema 3, to begin with revolutionary rigging, a thick double sail, inspired by the America’s Cup yachts. The boat is also fitted with tilting foils that boost performance at certain speeds. Furthermore, a rounded stem ensures greater stability and power, while the self-supporting and swivelling bowsprit (upwind or downwind) allows a wider scope of use for the foresails. RAPHAËL LUTARD The Mini 6.50 Arkema 3 was first entrusted to Quentin AT THE HELM Vlamynck, who completed the Mini-Transat La Boulangère 2017 race in 6th place.

  • Sleep Deprivation in Extreme Environments’
The design of ‘Mini’ solo offshore race yachts in relation to fatigue and sleep Research Dissertation June 2006 Faculty of Design, Architecture and Building University of Technology, Sydney TIM HARROLD 02014456 Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to analyse the development of solo offshore yacht racing, the main related risks and ways to reduce them. Focusing on the Mini Transat 6.5m class and how it fails to address these issues. The irony is that while this international solo entry-level class yacht should be encouraging sailors to pursue the discipline of solo offshore racing it is actually the wettest, hardest, most uncomfortable yacht afloat. (Sayer 2006) These “skiffs on steroids” Bray (2002) are 6.5m long, by 3m wide and designed to race solo across the Atlantic. tim harrold 02014456 From the information review, sleep deprivation emerges as the common theme that causes the greatest risk prompted by excessive fatigue and exposure. Racing single-handed is an increasingly accepted discipline of offshore yachting events and perhaps the last frontier of human isolation and endurance in extreme terrestrial sports. It provides a great commercial platform for sponsorship; the image of the lone sailor against the sea captivates and entertains the public –especially when they require rescuing… The specialist design of these craft pushes the envelope in keel, hull, rig and sail design to create extraordinary powerful, light and fast yachts. “Exhaustion is constantly around in the massive dinghies that are today’s single-handed racers. These are complicated, temperamental boats. Simply gybing them takes 20 minutes, what with all the shifting of sails, redistributing of water ballast, et cetera.” Rousmaniere (2003).

  • Techniques & Tactics for Singlehanded Sailing Thoughts, Tips
Thoughts, Tips, Techniques & Tactics For Singlehanded Sailing Andrew Evans ThirdThird EditionEdition Foreword by Bruce Schwab This book is only available as a free download from The Singlehanded Sailing Society at www.sfbaysss.org/tipsbook Front and back covers by Andrew Madding, club photographer for the Royal Victoria Yacht Club. The front cover represents everything it means to be a singlehanded sailor: High winds (two reefs in the main and a storm jib lashed on the bow) the tiller under my knee with the spin sheet in one hand – bracing myself with the other. The back cover represents everything else it means to be a singlehanded sailor: the afternoon nap. Foreword I met Andy when he came to help out my preparations on Ocean Planet for the 2004-2005 Vendee Globe. A nice guy and good sense of humor; after all he's Canadian. In many ways he represents all those who have become successful solo sailors on their own nickel; learning slowly from a mix of hard-earned experience, digging up obscure info, and sharing with each other. It's not like this sort of experience is falling off trees. While a lot of jabber about singlehanded sailing can be found on discussion forums and the odd magazine articles, this is the first collection of the varied aspects of the sport put together in one place. It takes thousands of hours of sailing to get the kind of knowledge contained in this book. It also takes a lot of experimentation and a willingness to be wrong nine times before getting it right on the tenth.

Frontiers in Women’s Health Research Article ISSN: 2398-2799 Gynecological and urological disorders among female sailors during offshore racing: concerning 10 participants in the 2013 Mini-Transat Loddé B1,2, Lacroze G3, Pougnet L2,4, Fimbault JC2,3 and Pougnet R2,5* 1European University of Brittany (UBO), France 2French Society of Maritime Medicine, France 3Emergency Unit, Hospital of Douarnenez, France 4Military Hospital, Clermont-Tonnerre, France 5Centre Atlantique de Philosophie (CAPHI), France Abstract Background: Over the years, the number of women crew members on board racing yachts has been increasing. However, offshore racing does not distinguish between the performance of men and women. Objectives: The main objective of this study is to evaluate the gynaecological and urological health issues encountered by female skippers in the 2013 Mini Transat. Material and method: This is a descriptive study, based on questionnaires and medical examinations. The latter were performed before the start of the race, at Douarnenez, at the beginning of October 2013 and completed at Pointe à Pitre at the end of November 2013. Ten female skippers, aged between 26 and 53 years, were included. Results: The absence of contraception was noted in 50% of cases, the occurrence of acute simple cystitis in three out of ten cases which was associated with a lack of hydration and poorer intimate hygiene than when on land. There were no emergency gynaecological disorders to treat during the race. Frequent episodes of buttocks folliculitis were identified. Conclusion: These different aspects led us to consider performing a gynaecological examination before the start of an offshore race, with screening for pregnancy, and also improving the antibiotic treatments contained in the on-board medicine chest.
