A large number of polychaete species from the North Atlantic were described in the early period of zoological studies in the 18th and 19th centuries. -

The family Polynoidae includes a group of scale worms which is abundant in several marine environments, and many members are associated with other invertebrates. The genus Harmothoe is one of the largest in number of species within the polynoids, with more than 150 described species. We summarize in a checklist information relative to 23 nominal species of Harmothoe from South America, with valid names, synonyms and original citations, discuss possible taxonomic problems, and provide illustrations of specimens from the northeastern coast of Brazil. Redescriptions of two species based on new specimens collected along the littoral of the State of Pernambuco, northeastern Brazil, are included. Harmotthoe fuscapinae and Harmothoe lanceocirrata are reported for the first time for Brazilian waters. Key words: Scale worms, polynoids; South Atlantic, new records. -

NMFS is also charged with the development and implementation of policies for managing national fishing grounds, develop- ment and enforcement of domestic fisheries regulations, surveillance of foreign fishing off United States coastal waters, and the development and enforcement of international fishery agreements and policies. E-mail:[email protected] Abstract Long-bodied polynoids, like Polyeunoa laevis McIntosh, 1885 and similar species which are often associated with cold- water corals, are regularly reported from Antarctic, Subantarctic and adjacent cold-temperate waters. The taxonomy of these species is confused and has been subject to various discussions in the past. For the revision presented here we examined the available type material and additional specimens of the following species: Polynoe antarctica Kinberg, 1858, Polyeunoa laevis McIntosh, 1885, Enipo rhombigera Ehlers, 1908, Hololepidella flynni Benham, 1921, Polyeunoe dubia Hartmann-Schröder, 1965, Polyeunoa monroi Averincev, 1978, and Polynoe thouarellicola Hartmann-Schröder, 1989. As a result we consider Polyeunoa laevis McIntosh, 1885, Parapolyeunoa flynni (Benham, 1921) n. comb., and Neopolynoe antarctica (Kinberg, 1858) n. comb. as valid species. Enipo rhombigera Ehlers, 1908, Polyeunoe dubia Hartmann-Schröder, 1965, and Polynoe thouarellicola Hartmann-Schröder, 1989 are junior synonyms of Polyeunoa laevis. Polyeunoa monroi Averincev, 1978 is a junior synonym of Hololepidella flynni Benham, 1921 for which the new genus Parapolyeunoa n. gen. is erected. Polynoe antarctica Kinberg, 1858 is transferred to the genus Neopolynoe Loshamn, 1981 and represents the third known species within this genus. -

A Check-List of Polychaete Species from the Black

Lists of the valid species, re-assigned species and dubious species (nomen dubium or indeterminable species) reported from the region are provided. The checklist comprises 238 valid species belonging to 45 families. Twenty three species belonging to 8 families were considered as nomen dubium or indeterminable. Fifty-one species reported from the Black Sea between 1868 and 2011 have been synonymised with other species. Among the Black Sea countries, the coast of Bulgaria is represented by the highest number of polychaete species (192 species), followed by the coasts of Ukrania (161 species) and Romania (115 species). The highest number of species (119 species) were found on sandy substratum, the lowest number of species (7 species) on sponges. Nine alien polychaete species (Hesionides arenaria, Streptosyllis varians, Glycera capitata, Nephtys ciliata, Polydora cornuta, Prionospio pulchra, Streblospio gynobranchiata, Capitellethus dispar and Ficopomatus enigmaticus) were reported from the Black Sea up to now. The most speciose families in the area were Syllidae (32 species), Spionidae (31 species), Phyllodocidae (16 species) and Nereididae (15 species). By presenting a complete overview of the species reported from the area, this work summarises our current knowledge about the diversity of the Black Sea polychaetes and provides a database for future studies.
