  • Deus Ex Machina? Witchcraft and the Techno-World Venetia Robertson
Deus Ex Machina? Witchcraft and the Techno-World Venetia Robertson Introduction Sociologist Bryan R. Wilson once alleged that post-modern technology and secularisation are the allied forces of rationality and disenchantment that pose an immense threat to traditional religion.1 However, the flexibility of pastiche Neopagan belief systems like ‘Witchcraft’ have creativity, fantasy, and innovation at their core, allowing practitioners of Witchcraft to respond in a unique way to the post-modern age by integrating technology into their perception of the sacred. The phrase Deus ex Machina, the God out of the Machine, has gained a multiplicity of meanings in this context. For progressive Witches, the machine can both possess its own numen and act as a conduit for the spirit of the deities. It can also assist the practitioner in becoming one with the divine by enabling a transcendent and enlightening spiritual experience. Finally, in the theatrical sense, it could be argued that the concept of a magical machine is in fact the contrived dénouement that saves the seemingly despondent situation of a so-called ‘nature religion’ like Witchcraft in the techno-centric age. This paper explores the ways two movements within Witchcraft, ‘Technopaganism’ and ‘Technomysticism’, have incorporated man-made inventions into their spiritual practice. A study of how this is related to the worldview, operation of magic, social aspect and development of self within Witchcraft, uncovers some of the issues of longevity and profundity that this religion will face in the future. Witchcraft as a Religion The categorical heading ‘Neopagan’ functions as an umbrella that covers numerous reconstructed, revived, or invented religious movements, that have taken inspiration from indigenous, archaic, and esoteric traditions.

Her Hidden Children: The Rise of Wicca and Paganism in America. Lanham: Altamira Press, 2006. xiv + 191 pp. $60.00 (cloth), ISBN 978-0-7591-0201-9; $21.95 (paper), ISBN 978-0-7591-0202-6. Reviewed by Sean McCloud (Department of Religious Studies, The University of North Carolina at Charlotte) Published on H-Amstdy (September, 2006) Toward the History of an Emergent New Religion Her Hidden Children examines the historical development of American Wicca and the broader Pagan movement. Together, these two combine to constitute what is likely the fastest growing new religious movement in the United States today. Chas S. Clifton, a Colorado State English professor and movement member since 1972, suggests that Wicca, the largest branch of Paganism, has even "become a world religion, although a tiny one" (p. 3). Despite its explosive growth, American Paganism is an amorphous and elusive entity. It lacks the elaborate institutional structures and centralized hierarchies of many established religions. In addition, as many as 80 percent of all Wiccan practitioners are "solitary," meaning that they worship outside of formal groups. These characteristics provide obstacles for the scholar seeking to narrate the movement's history. Indeed, Clifton suggests that "there is no one narrative about the growth of Pagan Witchcraft in America, but rather multiple narratives springing up at once" ( p. 11). Despite such difficulties, Clifton has provided readers with an initial and useful step toward the emergent history of American Paganism and Wicca.

  • Solstice Prayer 2016
SOLSTICE PRAYER JUNE 20161 Grace, Mercy, Love and Peace continue to be multiplied unto you through the knowledge of God and of Jesus Christ our Lord and Saviour. This month is full of major activities and alignments in the heavens. We are sending this full moon and solstice letter out now so as to equip you for the peak activity of June – the Summer solstice. We want to put you on alert concerning the main issues to tackle in prayer as you man the altar of the Lamb of God this season. Summer/Winter Solstice Saturnalia – Northern Hemisphere In ancient times, Winter Solstice and Saturnalia are celebrated hand in hand by pagans (witches, wizards, all manners of sorcerers, and so forth). Celebration of the winter solstice (December 20/21/22), the longest and darkest night of the year, usually begins with the Saturnalia. From December 17-21, pagans honoured Saturn, god of agricultural fertility with feasting. During this time, masters feasted with slaves. A slave is usually appointed as a mock king of the household. Throughout Saturnalia, the mock king rules and all slaves are given the freedom to do and say what they liked. After that, slaves go back to being slaves until the following year. During the time of slavery in America, Saturnalia was a major event and is still celebrated today in New Orleans. It is significant to note that the final abolition of slavery act in the U.S. was passed during the 1865 celebration of Saturnalia, a time for mocking slaves. A time in which slaves can pretend they are free.

PART SEVEN THE DRUID MISCELLANY Introduction Most of the material in this section is of very little importance to most pre 1986 Carleton Druids (because of its heavy Celtic Pagan orientation), but I feel that it has great importance for understanding the later NRDNA, and it may be of use to modern Carleton Druids. The books have been pretty much reprinted in order and verba- tim from DC(E). This is better preserves the historical nature of these documents, to show the approach and “angle” that the DC(E) of 1976 was presenting, especially to the compilers of religious ency- clopedists. Many issues of The Druid Chronicler magazine would essentially add to this section from 1976 to 1980. I removed the Book of Footnotes, broke it up and placed them under the appropri- ate texts rather than stuffing all of them in this obscure section of ARDA. I have added those sections and indicated so. As with every section of this collection, none of this material is necessarily indicative of the opinion of any other Druid except that of the author(s). The material is not dogmatic or canonical, and can not be assumed to represent the Reform as a whole. Most of it is terribly out of date, and much better recent materials are available. Film Reviews for "Dancing With Gaia" Testimonials for "Dancing With Gaia" "Dancing With Gaia" invites us to sense and feel ourselves as part of her, of Gaia, and brings the feeling of wholeness and joy. It is a very deep and touching experience. Ruth Denison, Buddhist teacher *** Jo Carson's "Dancing With Gaia" is a beautiful and inspiring film, which presents the Gaia Thesis in the context of ecstatic spirituality and sacred sexuality. As a long-time member of Feraferia, Jo incorporates rare footage and interviews with Feraferia's late founding genius, Fred Adams, whose visionary art and writings on the Goddess were a profound inspiration to early Pagan founders of the 1960s. Many other well-known figures in the Goddess community are interviewed as well--including Francesca DeGrandis, Joan Marler, Cerridwen Fallingstar, and the late Monica Sjoo. A lovely catalyst towards The Awakening! Oberon Zell, founder, Church of All Worlds 1 / 4 Film Reviews for "Dancing With Gaia" *** Just watched your film, Dancing with Gaia. You are to be congratulated, very nicely put together, very moving, wonderful images, the music - I thought I recognized Marty's (Martin Gregory) style. I felt energy multiple times while watching it. I liked the fact that there were many ideas about how to connect to the earth, very practical, which I like. It will also be an excellent introduction to the beginning person wanting to learn how to connect the earth, and for people like myself who will enjoy the wonderful feeling of the film. Alex Champion, PhD, Geomancer *** “Dancing with Gaia” is a magical, transformative film.

  • Modern Pagan Religious Conversion Revisited
Galtsin, D. (2016). Modern Pagan religious conversion revisited. Sacra, 14(2), 7–17. 7 Modern Pagan Religious Conversion Revisited Dmitry Galtsin, Russian Academy of Science Library e-mail: [email protected] Abstract When modern Paganism emerged as a new religious movement in Western Europe and America in the 1950s and 1960s, its followers described the experience of conversion that alluded to the conversion narrative models that were already well-spread in the religious mainstream. In their conversion narratives from the 1960s to the 2000s, reflected both in their Pagan writings and scholarly literature, we can see motives recognizable from generic Christian prototypes. A Pagan “crisis” conversion is perceived as an altered state of consciousness, which helps gain access to some sort of ultimate truth concerning reality. Keywords modern Paganism, religious conversion, new religious movements Introduction Modern Paganism as a new religious movement is mostly a religion into which people convert consciously, accepting its tenets and practices at a rather mature age. No wonder that the problem of religious conversion must inevitably become important for the academic study of Paganism. An important part of the whole conversion complex in any religion is the conversion narrative – a text which may be used both for legitimizing one’s religious choice, and for positioning a religion for outsiders. It is remarkable, though, how modern Pagans and Heathens are reluctant to use the very word “conversion”. It is for them associated too closely with Christian models of religious inculcation and active proselytism. One of the respondents in a sociological study of Paganism said about conversion, It’s a word that is loaded with Christian baggage, appropriate for Christians, not us.
