2007-08 Umkc Athletics Annual Report 2002007-087-08 UMKUMKCC AATHLETICSTHLETICS ANNUANNUALAL REPORREPORTT UMKUMKCC AAtthlehleticstics 2002007-087-08 AnnualAnnual RReporeportt Dear Friends of UMKC Athletics, On behalf of the UMKC Athletics Department, I want to thank you for your continued support of the Kangaroos. The generosity of so many great supporters has made the future bright for UMKC Athletics. In reviewing this annual report, you will see that we’ve made strides since my arrival in building a more well- rounded, comprehensive athletics program. We will con- tinue this process in an effort to bring championships to Kansas City to make our community proud to host the Kangaroos. Since my arrival, I’ve been committed to putting together a group of quality head coaches to lead and mentor our student-athletes. I feel like our comprehensive group of coaches is unrivaled within our league, and we are excited about where our programs are headed. Our men’s golf team had a strong season in which they compiled seven top- three finishes, which culminated with a runner-up showing at the Summit League Championships. Additionally, our men’s tennis and men’s soccer pro- grams both qualified for the league tournament. On the hardwood, men’s coach Matt Brown and women’s coach Candace White-Whitaker both began laying the foundation for future successes in their programs. I can’t say enough about these two individuals as we move forward. This year has seen the continued improvement in the upgrade of facilities. The Durwood Foundation pledged a $5 million gift for the construction of a new on- campus soccer stadium that will be one of the finest in The Summit League and the midwest. We also were able to renovate our men’s and women’s basketball and volleyball locker rooms to give our student-athletes a place to call their own. It is the start of many exciting facility projects in the coming months and years. Please join me as we look back to the accomplishments of this past year, made possible by your support. Thanks again for helping our student-athletes have a first-class experience during their time in Kansas City. Go Kangaroos! At The Summit League Championship, UMKC suffered a tight 69-65 loss to No. 2 seed IUPUI in the quarterfinals. - Junior Dane Brumagin was named a second team all-Summit League selection after pacing the team with a 17.1 scoring average, which ranked sixth in the league. The forward scored in double figures in 24 games, which included 12 games with 20 or more points. He finished the year ranked 17th in the nation in three-point field goal percentage and 23rd in free throw percentage. - In back-to-back games in December, Brumagin scored 40 points at Oakland and 35 points at IPFW. As a result, he was named the Mid-Majority Player of the Week on Dec. 10. - Senior Tim Blackwell became just the eighth UMKC player to join the 1,000-point club, as he hit the milestone on Feb. 21 at Oral Roberts. The guard finished his career ranked among the top-10 in several categories, including being fourth in three-point field goals (190), eighth in scoring (1,071) and eighth in assists (323). - Freshman Reggie Hamilton was the only true freshman to be named to the Summit League all-newcomer team after averaging 11.7 points last season. UMKC is the only team to have accomplished the feat, as the 2004-05 team also won its first round game as a No. 7 seed. - Sophomore Chazny Morris led the team in scoring, averaging 17.6 points per game. The mark was good for second-best in The Summit League and 48th best among all Division I players. I lusted after the various sports games advertised in the magazines until my mom finally relented and bought Strat-O-Matic Football for me in 1972. I got SOM’s baseball game a year later and I was hooked. I would get the new card set each year and attempt to play the in-progress season by moving the traded players around and turning ‘nameless player cards” into that year’s key rookies. I switched to APBA in the late ‘70’s because they started releasing some complete old season sets and the idea of playing with those really caught my fancy. Between then and the mid-nineties, I collected a lot of card sets.
