GRAPHIC NOVEL 7 QUESTIONS WITH C.B. CEBULSKI BOOK CLUB C.B. CEBULSKI EDITOR C.B. Cebulski has held the title of Editor-in-Chief of Marvel Comics since 2017. As a former Marvel Comics editor, C.B. proved invaluable as he used his industry knowledge to shepherd the Mangaverse and Ultimate Universe lines as well as the critically acclaimed Runaways. hoopla Runaways came out at a time when the comics market was ooded with over-the-top violence and digital: tended to be very male-dominated. How important was it to put out the Runaways comic in the early 2000s as a mostly non-superhero and predominantly women-led title? C.B. In developing Runaways, we didn’t set out with any kind of ratings or demographics rules in mind when we Cebulski: were brainstorming the comics for what was then known as the Tsunami line. Inspired by the diversity one nds in manga, our goal was to create “new reader friendly” series with up-and-coming creators and/or new characters that were more easily accessible for readers who found Marvel’s continuity a bit too daunting to break into. hd: The series follows a group of characters that were completely new and unknown to the Marvel universe. What was the pitch from Brian K. Vaughan that convinced you this could be a hit series? What grabbed you? CC: I’d had the pleasure of getting to know Brian personally before we started working together through our mutual friend Jay Faerber, and having liked some of the other comics he’d written, I knew our story sensibilities aligned.

  • Jay Faerber: Cause & Effect
Jay Faerber: Cause & Effect Believe it or not, it was Jay Faerber’s love of soap operas that helped him break into the comics industry. After sending a submission packet to Marvel Editor and daytime television aficionado Frank Pittarese, Jay was soon offered a writing gig on issue of What If…?. Since then Jay has written a bunch of material for the House of Ideas, most notably New Warriors and Generation X. He also wrote the fan-favorite DC series Titans for two years. In 2002 Jay unveiled his celebrity superhero book Noble Causes for Image Comics. Beloved by critics and creators, Noble Causes injected a giant dose of family drama and unpredictability into comics. Previously a series of mini-series, Noble Causes will be relaunched this summer as an ongoing title. Jay has also begun to diversify his portfolio with the recently released mystery, Dodge’s Bullets and the Top Cow hero-for-hire revamp Strykeforce. I talked to Jay about the struggles of keeping a creator-owned book on reader radar, reviving characters from the dead and debated the survival rates for nude girls in the jungle. MARKISAN NASO: Noble Causes seems like it's been trying to find its footing since it debuted. First it was a full-color bi-monthly miniseries, then a monthly color mini-series, then it switched to a black and white format for the four-issue story "Distant Relatives." Now NC is going to be a full-color ongoing. How much of a struggle has it been to keep the book going? And how do you think the move to an ongoing NC will benefit the book? JAY FAERBER: I admit, the book's had a shaky publishing life.
