How do you plan to have child- ren with a strange man without com- promising your beliefs?» trademark improvisational style is applied to every part of Silent Men. “It was all just an adrenaline rush! We laughed so much as we made stuff up, which is really obvious if you look at the rough cut. It was just plain old fun all the way!” remembers star Alexandra Woodward. This style doesn’t only apply to those in front of the camera, warns Director of Photography Karine Zerbé. “I remember I was the crew of one!” she recalled. “It was quite exciting. Bashar brought me to California and we arrived in L.A. the day before we started shooting. We immediately drove to the camera store, bought a brand-new came- ra and I went home and studied the manual that night. The next morning we started shooting!” she laughed. As with all Shbib films this one was fast and very intense. All admit there were the usual challenges associated with a low-budget filmmaking: the lack of time, and the lack of a proper crew compliment in this case, but all enjoyed the family-style atmosphere so common on a Shbib set, they would routinely help the director cook PRODUCTION NOTES meals for the rest of the cast and crew. Her support has been vital to my success: in my education, in my career, and in my life. She and our children are my greatest joy. I would like to thank Dr. Carey Martin for his guidance throughout this project. His expertise was an asset, as was his passion for transmedia and film, which served as my inspiration for this thesis. I am grateful and humbled that he agreed to chair this project. I also want to thank Dr. Norman Mintle for lending his insight, expertise, and wisdom to this project; it is much sharper for it. His leadership, both as a professor and dean, has been appreciated. As a writer, I would be remiss if I did not acknowledge those who have been critical in shaping my abilities over the years, there have been a few, but none more so than Mitzi Bible. I want to thank all of the pioneers of transmedia studies, Henry Jenkins, Houston Howard, Christy Dena, Geoffrey Long, Tyler Weaver, and others, who blazed trails in world building research and have inspired me to do the same.

  • 'The Wizard of Oz' to 'Wicked': Trajectory of American Myth
FROM 'THE WIZARD OF OZ' TO 'WICKED': TRAJECTORY OF AMERICAN MYTH Alissa Burger A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY May 2009 Committee: Ellen Berry, Advisor Gene S. Trantham Graduate Faculty Representative Don McQuarie Piya Pal Lapinski © 2009 Alissa Burger All Rights Reserved iii ABSTRACT Ellen Berry, Advisor The Wizard of Oz story has been omnipresent in American popular culture since the first publication of L. Frank Baum’s children’s book The Wonderful Wizard of Oz at the dawn of the twentieth century. Ever since, filmmakers, authors, and theatre producers have continued to return to Oz over and over again. However, while literally hundreds of adaptations of the Wizard of Oz story abound, a handful of transformations are particularly significant in exploring discourses of American myth and culture: L. Frank Baum’s The Wonderful Wizard of Oz (1900); MGM’s classic film The Wizard of Oz (1939); Sidney Lumet’s film The Wiz (1978); Gregory Maguire’s novel Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West (1995); and Stephen Schwartz and Winnie Holzman’s Broadway musical Wicked (2003). This project critiques theories of fixed or prescriptive American myth, instead developing a theory of American myth as active, performative and even, at times, participatory, achieved through discussion of the fluidity of text and performance, built on Diana Taylor’s theory of the archive and the repertoire. By approaching text and performance as fluid rather than fixed, this dissertation facilitates an interdisciplinary consideration of these works, bringing children’s literature, film, popular fiction, theatre, and music together in a theoretically multifaceted approach to the Wizard of Oz narrative, its many transformations, and its lasting significance within American culture.
