Our November 13th meeting will be of interest to everyone that has come home from one of our monthly club meetings where we had a small auction and bought a lot or you went to a rock and mineral show or just picked up those priceless stones from the roadside.

We will be having a club member’s auction so gather your extra rocks, minerals, or other rockhounding items that you can part with. We will be sending out the forms that need to be completed to auction these well-collected rockhounding items during the November meeting.

President’s Message Jonathan Harris

Hello fellow Rockhounds,

Fall has started and our programs are back. The few who are stragglers—please pay your membership dues now so you can stay on our roster and continue to participate in field trips and other events. Mark your calendars for October 14: Saturday morning will be a club auction of over 100 lots of lapidary materials. The items include many Lake Superior , Gypsum crystals, , geode sections, and other lapidary material. Much is old stock that you are unlikely to dig up any more. If you are running out of shelf space, our November meeting will be a club auction. Now is the time to start thinking of letting go of those duplicates or specimens that are getting lonely and gathering dust. You can restock at the various local shows that appear in the Rockhounder and emails.

Happy autumn, ─Jonathan

It was M/S/P to approve the minutes of the June 12, 2017 regular meeting, with the following corrections: the general door prize was won by Gerald Elgert, not Chuck Hyland, and the show table door prize was won by Karen Lottes, not Carro Hinderstein.

Continued from page 3

Program: Gary Leaman introduced the dual speakers for the evening, Scott Sprauge and Ed Parshley, both of the Central MD GPAA. The common theme was Arkansas, with Ed discussing “Experiences Finding Crystals in Arkansas” and Scott discussing “Experiences Finding at Crater of Diamonds State Park.” Ed stated that quartz in Arkansas has been known for some time with Spanish explorers noting local Indians had weapons with strange tips and blades. He described the Ron Coleman Mine and the Crystal Seen Trading Company. The former is an active mine with collecting on tailing piles and the latter is a former mine where digging to pockets is required. A large specimen from Ron Coleman mine was displayed. Scott gave details on the State Park containing the 8th largest reserve in the world, with details of the geology and examples of the diamonds found there. He described the process for collecting including the tools needed. His own finds were passed around among the audience and the talk ended with a demonstration of the method to concentrate and pick out diamonds from material brought back from the park. Both speakers answered many questions from an interested audience. Thanks, Scott and Ed.

Board of Directors: It was M/S/P to donate a club family membership and a small mineral collection to a local silent auction at Maryvale Elementary School. Chris Luzier and Tom Dushel had minerals to use in the donation.

Joel Rosen announced the purchase of a new club trailer to transport and store show materials, replacing the aging trailer. Club member will be needed to transfer materials at a time to be set and announced after trailer delivery.

Show table and door prizes were administered by Joel Rosen.

Adjournment: It was M/S/P to adjourn the meeting at 9:59 PM Jeff Cessna, Secretary

The Rockhounder October 2017 GLMSMC Board Meeting Minutes for September 18, 2017 Jeff Cessna

Board members present: Doug Baum, Jeff Cessna, Jonathan Harris, Gary Leaman, Chris Luzier, Holly McNeil, Joel Rosen, and Dave Tiktinsky. Board members not present: Tom Dushel, Dave Fryauff, and Wendell Mohr. President Jonathan Harris called the September 18, 2017 meeting to order at approximately 7:38 PM.

Auction: The material delivered so far has begun to be organized into lots. Two additional loads are anticipated. Logistics for delivery and further sorting were discussed. Some material may not arrive in time to be printed in Rockhounder. Dave Tiktinsky required information on lots to prepare the flyer. Chris Luzier will provide information. Hours were discussed. The venue will be contacted about possibility for setting up the evening before and a contingency for the auction running long.

Property: Discussions of a date to transfer material from trailer to trailer established for November 4th. (This date was changed to November 5th after the meeting.) Joel will provide an announcement for the Rockhounder. Joel discussed the possibility of using the parking lot of a local school for the transfer. He will contact for permission. Chris Luzier will supply 2-3 folding tables and Joel will supply one. It was M/S/P to authorize $50 for the purchase of wide straps for securing cases. Option for sale of the old trailer were discussed.

Nominations: It was M/S/P to establish a nominating committee consisting of Chair Chris Luzier and members Dave Tiktinsky and Jeff Cessna. Potential candidates were discussed. Nominations must appear in the October Rockhounder.

Programs: Chris Luzier and Gary Leaman recently presented programs at the Central MD GPAA. The topic of honoraria for speakers was discussed. Gary Leaman discussed upcoming speakers, club member auction, and the Christmas party.

Membership: Doug Baum distributed the updated roster by email. We are currently ahead of renewals for the same timeframe last year. Doug will renew Montgomery County Student Service SSL registration.

Show: Dave Tiktinsky discussed dealers. So far, the majority are returning. The bulk email system will be used again. Holly McNeil stated that statistics indicate fewer flyers have been returned, so fewer can be printed. Chris Luzier will print a preliminary flyer version for distribution at upcoming shows. Holly will supply template. Gary Leaman noted that more foam floor tiles were needed for the lapidary shop. Holly noted she had begun to purchase some of the usual supplies. As the discussion devolved, Holly wondered aloud if she needed to hit anybody. No suitable candidate was identified.

Past President: Chris Luzier discussed the upcoming Ultraviolation show on October 28th.

In Memory of Cynthia Hunter-Shupe Chris Luzier

I wanted to let the membership know that it is with great sorrow that I have to report the passing of long time member, Cynthia Hunter-Shupe. Cynthia and her husband, Alf, were always willing to help with our annual show in the Demonstrators section and attended our monthly meetings. I saw Alf at our September meeting and told him that is was great to see him again as I had not seen him or Cynthia at the meetings for a while. That is when he let me know about Cynthia's passing over the summer. Please keep him in your thoughts and prayers.

Willis Mountain Kyanite Mine Trip Report

I think we had just two representative rockhounds from GLMSMC ─me and Steve Calamucci─but it was a great day to be hounding and this remarkable mine opens up just once a year to collectors. Kyanite is one of the US government declared strategic minerals and this mine in VA supplies 80% of the world's annual demand. Industrial application is for high temperature ceramics and heat refractory insulators.

Sincere thanks to the owners of Virginia Kyanite Inc. and to the Lynchburg Mineral & Lapidary Society for inviting EFMLS groups to take part.
