Historical Evidence of Hats and Headwear Historians and archeologists find that people wore hats and headwear dating back thousands of years ago. 5,000 year old hat-wearer • In the 1990s, a mummified body was found in the ice of the Italian Alps. It was the body of an adult male that scientists named Otzi the Iceman. • Otzi was found wearing a cap made from the hide of a brown bear. 2 This discovery shows a hat being worn almost 5,300 years ago! 1 4,000 year old Egyptian hats • Evidence of ancient Egyptians wearing cone-shaped objects on their head have been found in artwork and images from tombs, papyri (paper) and coffins. These hats seem to have been part of rituals or ceremonies.3 • Archeologists have recently found mummies buried with cone-shaped 4 hats. Research concluded that the hats were made from beeswax. 5 Red liberty caps have long symbolized freedom • This style of liberty cap, also known as a Phrygian Cap, traces its history back to the ancient kingdom of Phrygia. • In ancient Rome, these hats symbolized freedom and were given to freed slaves in a ceremony announcing their new status.6 7 • These red caps were used in the late 1700s in France, during the French Revolution.

History of the Ranger Stetson Conference Partnership a Win-Win By Aleta Walther The decision to merge PRAC’s and the Park Law Enforcement Association’s (PLEA) 2019 conferences into one event resulted in a winning partnership for all who attended the conference. Ninety-five PRAC members and 32 PLEA members from across the country attended the joint event at the beachfront Crown Plaza Hotel in Ventura, March 4-8. The conference offered off-site activities and 34 continuing education programs across four tracks: resource management, public safety, park law enforcement and interpretation. Twenty-five individuals attended the free pre-conference visit to the Ventura County Sheriff’s facility at the Camarillo Airport. Attendees had the opportunity to experience seemingly real crime situations via the sheriff department’s 3D simulator, including school hostage and drug bust scenarios. The all-day event also highlighted one of the stars of the sheriff’s canine unit and the department’s search and rescue helicopters. Attendees learned how the sheriff department and Ventura Fire work in tandem to ensure public safety and coordinate search and rescue airlifts from the Channel Islands. Tuesday’s joint luncheon included keynote speaker Kerry Plemmons, a professor with the University of Denver, Daniels School of Business Public Safety Leadership Program.

Stetson rented a small room, bought the tools he needed, bought $10 worth of fur and the John B. Stetson Hat Company was born. A year later the "Hat of the West" or the now famous "Boss of the Plains" hat was born and the name Stetson was on its way to becoming the mark of quality, durability, innovation and beauty. John B. Stetson experienced trying times in his life but after it all he relied on the one thing he did exceptionally well, making hats. He was trained by his father, a master hatter, and applied his skills and knowledge to a trade that, at the time was not held in high regard. A hatter was seen as unreliable, lazy, or aloof, only looking to make his money and go have fun. John B. Stetson changed all that and built one of America's most well-known and successful businesses. The longevity and history of the John B. Stetson Company is based on innovation and quality! John B. Stetson led the hat industry his entire career by designing new hat styles for fashion and function. When it came to quality it was his creed and for the past 150 years it has so stamped the product that the name and the word are synonymous. Today the Stetson hat factory in Garland, Texas is one of the largest in the country and produces a line of hats in hundreds of different styles and colors.
