  • The YA Novel in the Digital Age by Amy Bright a Thesis
The YA Novel in the Digital Age by Amy Bright A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English Department of English and Film Studies University of Alberta © Amy Bright, 2016 Abstract Recent research by Neilsen reports that adult readers purchase 80% of all young adult novels sold, even though young adult literature is a category ostensibly targeted towards teenage readers (Gilmore). More than ever before, young adult (YA) literature is at the center of some of the most interesting literary conversations, as writers, readers, and publishers discuss its wide appeal in the twenty-first century. My dissertation joins this vibrant discussion by examining the ways in which YA literature has transformed to respond to changing social and technological contexts. Today, writing, reading, and marketing YA means engaging with technological advances, multiliteracies and multimodalities, and cultural and social perspectives. A critical examination of five YA texts – Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief, Libba Bray’s Beauty Queens, Daniel Handler’s Why We Broke Up, John Green’s The Fault in Our Stars, and Jaclyn Moriarty’s The Ghosts of Ashbury High – helps to shape understanding about the changes and the challenges facing this category of literature as it responds in a variety of ways to new contexts. In the first chapter, I explore the history of YA literature in order to trace the ways that this literary category has changed in response to new conditions to appeal to and serve a new generation of readers, readers with different experiences, concerns, and contexts over time.

  • Études at Play : Narrative Identity in Adolescents with Chronic Illness
Études at play: Narrative Identity in Adolescents with Chronic Illness in Contemporary Young Adult Literature Volume 1 Exegesis Pamela Jane Harvey Submitted in fulfilment of the requirements of the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communication (246AA) November 2018 Faculty of Arts & Design, University of Canberra - i - Abstract Storytelling gives voice to people’s experiences, assisting them in making meaning of their lives and their place in it. It is also integral to a person’s narrative identity and the sense of self created through these stories. Philosopher Paul Ricoeur asserts that narrative identity is not present at a story’s beginning but born in the telling, creating a future for the narrator. For some, the effects of ongoing illness complicate narrative identity and storytelling becomes an avenue to express what it is to live with the effects of disease and how it shapes self. The resultant stories are known as illness narratives. Illness narratives form a burgeoning category of autobiography but published texts are limited to mostly adult storytellers. This thesis examines contemporary young adult fictional illness narratives (‘illness fictions’) as a cohort of books that act as transformative texts in the interpretation and understanding of the illness experience. Sociologist Arthur Frank’s illness narrative typology, based on Paul Ricoeur’s idea of narrative identity and consisting of three categories, provides a lens through which to interrogate these texts and their narrative type. While Frank’s typology is a useful initial tool, its application to stories of ill adolescents is restrictive. This thesis extends the illness narrative typology to five categories in order to create a more nuanced framework for the investigation and creation of illness.

  • Books for Christmas Giving ‘Christmas Gift Suggestions: to Your Enemy, Forgiveness
Supplement to What's the Story? newsletter ISSN 11750189: Volume 9: Issue 4: November 2010 Books for Christmas Giving ‘Christmas gift suggestions: To your enemy, forgiveness. To an opponent, tolerance. To a friend, your heart. To a customer, service. To all, charity. To every child, a good example. To yourself, respect.’ ~ Oren Arnold. Our book list features books we’d be happy to give – or receive! – as Christmas presents. Give the gift of your heart, and an example, by choosing books this year. You may recognise some of the reviews – this is because the books are so wonderful, we wanted to tell you about them again – this time as Christmas gifts. These may be brand-new, just discovered older titles, or welcome reprints of old favourites. We’re an eclectic bunch, and our selection usually travels across many genres and tastes. We've also taken the opportunity to stretch our geographic boundaries, and suggest books that you may have to order in, specially. But, as many of us are ordering books online more and more, we thought this wouldn't be an issue for you! Of course, many of the titles will also be available at local bookshops. Reviewers: Kerry Aluf, Sanya Baker, Helen Beckingsale, Crissi Blair, Allister Campbell, Tina Collins, Annie Coppell, Lois Huston, Wayne Mills, Helen Schwarcz, Rosemary Tisdall, and guest starring graduate students from the Faculty of Education, University of Auckland. • Student Edition High School 2015-16
Student Edition High School 2015-16 July 23, 2015 Dear Imagine Parents/Guardians and Students, We invite you to participate in the Eighth Annual Imagine Schools National Advanced Reading Challenge (ARC). This initiative is designed to challenge students to choose high quality literature, to read as much and as often as they are able, and to share their love for reading with peers and adults on their Imagine campus. The ARC fosters students “acquiring and owning” their education by “developing academic and character habits to increase learning opportunities” and “becoming independent, self‐directed learners.” (pp. 20‐21, Imagine Schools Academic Excellence Framework). Many students are capable of moving ahead academically with only limited direction and attention from teachers. What they need is encouragement to take risks, to develop perseverance, and to venture out into the world of ideas and knowledge. We also believe that one of the best ways to become a life‐long learner is to develop a love of reading. Dennis’ older brother Ray read and reported on over 100 books in his sophomore year in high school. He now has a personal library in his home that houses over 10,000 books. Similarly, when she was in the 4th grade, Eileen received $100 from her parents for reading 100 books during the school year. This challenge fanned her love of reading and further inspired her to have high academic aspirations. The Advanced Reading Challenge is open to Imagine Schools’ students in grades 3‐12 who are at or above grade level in reading, and who can assume responsibility for independent work beyond their class and homework assignments.
