  • Themes of Exodus and Revolution in Ellison's
THEMES OF EXODUS AND REVOLUTION IN ELLISON’S INVISIBLE MAN, MORRISON’S BELOVED, AND DOCTOROW’S RAGTIME Tracy Peterson Turner, B.A., M.A. Dissertation Prepared for the Degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS December 2000 APPROVED: James T. F. Tanner, Major Professor and Chair Thomas R. Preston, Committee Member John Robert Ross, Committee Member Brenda R. Sims, Chair of Graduate Studies in English C. Neal Tate, Dean of the Robert B. Toulouse School of Graduate Studies Turner, Tracy Peterson, Themes of Exodus and Revolution in Ellison’s Invisible Man, Morrison’s Beloved, and Doctorow’s Ragtime. Doctor of Philosophy (English), December 2000, 150 pp., references, 80 titles. In my dissertation I examine the steps in and performance of revolution through the writings of three Postmodern authors, Ralph Ellison, Toni Morrison, and E. L. Doctorow, in light of the model of the biblical Exodus journey and the revolution which precipitated that movement. I suggest that the revolution which began with the Israelites’ bondage in Egypt has provided the foundation for American literature. I show that Invisible Man, Beloved, and Ragtime not only employ the motif of the Exodus journey; they also perpetuate the silent revolution begun by the Israelites while held captive in Egypt. This dissertation consists of six chapters. Chapter One provides the introduction to the project. Chapter Two provides the model for this study by defining the characteristics of the Exodus journey, Moses as the leader of the Israelites, and the pattern of revolution established by Michael Walzer in Exodus and Revolution. In Chapters Three, Four, and Five, I apply the model established in Chapter Two to the individual texts.

  • Video Games and the Mobilization of Anxiety and Desire
PLAYING THE CRISIS: VIDEO GAMES AND THE MOBILIZATION OF ANXIETY AND DESIRE BY ROBERT MEJIA DISSERTATION Submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Communications in the Graduate College of the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 2012 Urbana, Illinois Doctoral Committee: Professor Kent A. Ono, Chair Professor John Nerone Professor Clifford Christians Professor Robert A. Brookey, Northern Illinois University ABSTRACT This is a critical cultural and political economic analysis of the video game as an engine of global anxiety and desire. Attempting to move beyond conventional studies of the video game as a thing-in-itself, relatively self-contained as a textual, ludic, or even technological (in the narrow sense of the word) phenomenon, I propose that gaming has come to operate as an epistemological imperative that extends beyond the site of gaming in itself. Play and pleasure have come to affect sites of culture and the structural formation of various populations beyond those conceived of as belonging to conventional gaming populations: the workplace, consumer experiences, education, warfare, and even the practice of politics itself, amongst other domains. Indeed, the central claim of this dissertation is that the video game operates with the same political and cultural gravity as that ascribed to the prison by Michel Foucault. That is, just as the prison operated as the discursive site wherein the disciplinary imaginary was honed, so too does digital play operate as that discursive site wherein the ludic imperative has emerged. To make this claim, I have had to move beyond the conventional theoretical frameworks utilized in the analysis of video games.

Digital Fortress Dan Brown Reviewed by: Justin 15 Star Teen Book Reviewer of Be the Star You Are! Charity www.bethestaryouare.org Digital Fortress is a science fiction book about TRANSLATR, a code in the NSA that, if released, would carry massive implications for national security and US intelligence. The code is written by Tankando, a former NSA employee who felt that the NSA’s intrusions into the private lives of citizens were unjustified. When people in the NSA attempt to break it, they find that it is impossible to break. The NSA hires Susan Fletcher, a cryptographer (expert in coding/decoding), to locate a password that would allow the NSA to stop TRANSLATR. Throughout the plot, Susan encounters various complications that prevent her discovery of the code, including the death of Tankando. This was one of the best science fiction books I have read. Suspenseful cliffhangers throughout the novel kept my eyes glued after every chapter. My favorite parts of the book were definitely the plot twists, which were abundant. The best surprise was a revelation about the person who created TRANSLATR. However, I cannot tell you all of the surprises; you will have to read the book to find out! On the other hand, the book was not without faults. Some of the information presented about cryptology and the NSA weren’t entirely accurate. If you’re especially interested in those fields, the book may not be the best source. However, the slight inaccuracies don’t take away from the plot. In addition, the various perspectives in the book were sometimes difficult to follow, especially if you read the book in many sittings.

Ol. 1996 Acceptance of Ms. 29. 02. 1996 The mammal fauna of desert regions of Syria is still imperfectly known both with regard to species number and to distribution. Recent field work in the Euphrates valley (by C. E.) resulted in the addition of a third species of hedgehog, Paraechinus aethiopicus (Ehrenberg, 1833), to the Syrian fauna. Previously only Erinaceus concolor Martin, 1838, and Hemiechinus auritus (Gmelin, 1770) were known from this country (Harrison and Bates 1991). Besides Syria, only Israel, Palestine and Jordan host such a high species di- versity of spiny hedgehogs (Erinaceinae) due to the geographic position at the crossing of three faunal realms, the Palaearctic, Oriental and Aethiopian region. Black masculinity and White-cast Sitcoms Unraveling stereotypes in New Girl Marie Zafimehy Supervisor: Alma Persson, Gender Studies, LiU Master’s Programme Gender Studies – Intersectionality and Change Master’s thesis 15 ECTS credits ISRN: LIU-TEMA G/GSIC1-A—19/015-SE Marie Zafimehy 2 Master thesis - Gender, Intersectionality and Change ABSTRACT For decades, situational comedies — commonly named “sitcoms” — have been racially segregated on TV between Black-cast sitcoms and White-cast sitcoms. Extensive research has been led about representation of Black and White masculinities in this segregated context. This master thesis studies what happens when White and Black males are equally casted as main characters in contemporary sitcoms by offering a case-study of the 2011 sitcom New Girl (2011-2017). How is Black masculinity represented in New Girl, and in which ways does it intersect with contemporary societal issues (e.g. racial profiling, Black Lives Matter movement)? This case-study uses tools, methodologies and concepts, drawn from Black and Intersectional feminism as well as Feminist media studies. Based on a 25 episodes sample of the show, it implements Ronald Jackson’s traditional stereotypes classification and “Black masculine identity theory” (Jackson, 2006) to study representations of Black masculinity in New Girl, through its two main Black male characters, Winston and Coach. Given that representations of minorities in popular culture reflect and influence our contemporary society, the results offer new insights about how sitcoms, series and pop- culture productions in general can challenge traditional stereotypes and display a more progressive Black masculinity.
