The work was conducted from 2004–2015 at 9 woodland reserves in Warsaw (Poland). On the basis of the analysis of pellets of tawny owls Strix aluco, 2792 individuals were identified (24 species). Reserves supported from 7 to 16 of the small mammal species, the highest overall number of species estimated (Chao-1) was 19. Species present in every reserve were Apodemus flavicollis, A. agrarius, Rattus norvegi- cus, Sorex araneus and Talpa europaea.

Webber 1964) “The cross-links that enable a district to function as a Thing are neither vague nor mysterious. They consist of working relationships among specific people, many of them without much more in common than that they share a fragment of geography” (J. Jacobs 1961) 1. Introduction The only hypothesis about cities and urban societies that can never be falsified is the one about the continuity of change. As concepts and theories rise and fall it is the unchangeable that is searched for in the regularities that stand behind urban development. In the early 1960s, M. Webber (1963, 1964) announced the birth of a non- place urban realm and of a community without propinquity. He perceived this as a consequence of the development of communication technologies in the US, and the diminishing role of ‘place’ as a physical setting. A. Giddens (2007) confirms the relevance of such understanding by saying that a community today should be not necessarily identified with a physical neighbourhood. Still, the city as an entity and an idea has survived as carrier of spirit and values (Bell, de Shalit 2011), whereas networks of relationships decide about its character and sustainability.

The Polish Army War II was defeated after more than a month of fighting. After Poland had been overrun, a government-in-exile (headquartered in Britain), armed forces, and an intelligence service were established outside of Poland. These organizations contributed to the Allied effort throughout the war. The Polish Army was recreated in the West, as well as in the East (after the German invasion of the Soviet Union). Poles provided crucial help to the Allies throughout the war, fighting on land, sea and air. Notable was the service of the Polish Air Force, not only in the Allied victory in the Battle of Britain but also the subsequent air war. Polish ground troops The personnel of submarine were present in the North Africa Campaign (siege of Tobruk); ORP Sokół displaying a Jolly the Italian campaign (including the capture of the monastery hill Roger marking, among others, at the Battle of Monte Cassino); and in battles following the the number of sunk or damaged invasion of France (the battle of the Falaise pocket; an airborne ships brigade parachute drop during Operation Market Garden and one division in the Western Allied invasion of Germany). Introduction With 3 million residents, the Metropolitan Warsaw region is today the ninth most-populated capital city in the EU. It has undergone a series of far-reaching changes to its economic structure over the past 50 years to attain this status. When Warsaw returned to a market economy in the 1990s, it inherited a unique set of conditions. These included poorly organised and poorly integrated public transport, ubiquitous pre-fabricated housing blocks, a distinct lack of single-family homes, numerous empty spaces, a very complex ownership pattern with hundreds of historic property owners demanding restitution from the new state, and almost no legal or regulatory instruments to prevent sprawl.1 This in turn led to a cycle of haphazard development, sprawl, and a proliferation of low-density suburbs, particularly as the previous planning office was replaced by private companies that lacked planning experience.
