About a year ago(2003), I was diagnosed with cancer. I had a scan at 7:30 in “the morning, and it clearly showed a tumour on my pancreas. I didn't even know what a pancreas was. All the doctors told me was that this was almost certainly a type of cancer that is incurable, and that I should expect to live no longer than three to six months." Later that evening, I had a biopsy, where they inserted an endoscope down “my throat, through my stomach and into my intestines, put a needle into my pancreas and removed a few cells from the tumour. I was sedated, but my wife, who was there, told me that when they viewed the cells under a microscope the doctors started crying because it turned out to be a very rare form of pancreatic cancer that is curable with surgery. I had the surgery and I'm fine now." CHAPTER 3: OVERVIEW OF POLITICAL EVENTS AND NATIONAL BUDGET ANNOUNCEMENTS IN MALAYSIA The focus of this research study is on the impact of political events and national budget announcement on the local stock market. For the purpose of this project, a set of 38 discrete political events with different dates of occurrence which cover a time period of three decades starting from 1981 have been selected. Though a longer perspective is useful in providing a broader view of the picture, this study will not cover events prior to 1981, except for occasional reference and summary during the analysis. The scope of the selected political news is limited to government-oriented announcements which can be broadly categorized into six major types: Dissolutions of the Parliament, General Elections, party elections, the changing of administration leadership, the reshuffle of cabinet and extraordinary political events. This study, however, does not include news from the opposition party. The second part of the research will be dealing with the national budget announcements which broadly include some of the major information such as the country's GDP, balance of payment, fiscal policy, and tax policy. Fifteen years of national budget from 1998 to 2011 have been collected for testing and analysis on their impact on the Malaysian market reactions. 38 3.1 Political events from 1981—1990 The first event of this study dates back to 15 May 1981 when Hussein Onn, the then Prime Minister of Malaysia, first announced his intention to resign due to health problem (Mean, 1991) and would pass the Premiership to Mahathir Mohamad.

MCA will probably follow the Prime Minister’s advice and shed part of its Nanyang shares to some ‘strategic partners’. The financial burden of assuming 72% of Nanyang shares alone should persuade MCA’s Huaren Hold- ings Sdn Bhd to do this, and sooner rather than later. Only 53 per cent of those who voted at the 24 June EGM favoured the takeover. Even so the ‘Gang of Eight’ led by Lim Ah Lek and Chua Jui Meng have declared that they will accept the EGM’s decision. Their road-shows will stop. The party will close ranks. But for how long? Even if there’s no mud-slinging within MCA, there is still a storm of protest in the Chinese commu- nity against the Nanyang takeo- ver. The protest will not die so quickly but will probably haunt MCA. Indeed Ling Liong Sik’s slim victory suggests MCA is so split that it will only be a matter of Perennial Consider the party feud that has time before another round of in- Succession Feuds festered in recent years between tra-party feuding occurs with MCA president Dr Ling Liong even higher stakes. Then the MCA has had a very fractious Sik and his deputy, Lim Ah Lek.

I 1 The UMNO Baru General Assembly: ------~------ ~----~------ READING BETWEEN THE LINES Wawasan Team fades, PAS draws flak, Rahim scandal ignored At the UMNO Baru General Assembly held on 18-20 November, the message rang loud and clear - we are one, big, happy family. It was, after all, an assembly where delegates were hypnotised by the dizzying scent of the general election hanging in the air - a time to close ranks and project a sense of greatness. But when the assembly drew to a close and the lights dimmed, questions descended on the carpeted floors of the PWTC and started dancing in rhythmic progression: What had happened to the much-vaunted Wawasan Team? Were delegates gagged on the Rahim issue? Is Mahathir's position secure? How close are Anwar and Daim? Why was PAS singled out for systematic pounding? NNP Is Mahathir's position secure? lifts the carpet in search of clues ... MNO Baru certainly came across as one big, happy and Uunited family at it<; recent General Assembly. This is, after all, not a party election year where political ambitions are too much at stake to think about being united. Hence, it is usually the time for UMNO Baru leaders to sit back and attempt to be profound abput Malay society, its problems and future. We were entertained to endless footage and photographs of the UMNO Baru leadership in a variety of meaningful poses. Dr Mahathir The Assembly: Issues were relevant and important to Malaysian society. Mohamad peering through a pair of binoculars, Wanita leaders looking adoringly at Anwar Ibrahim, generous doses of English literature (never mind, if it was read all wrong), Mahathir and his wife shop ping, Anwar and Daim Zainuddin sharing a cosy chat and so on.

  • The Malaysian State and the Régulation of Labour: from Colonial Economy to K-Economy
The Malaysian State and the Régulation of Labour: From Colonial Economy to K-Economy Donna Turner B. A. (Honours) Curtin University This thesis is presented for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Murdoch University 2006 Abstract This thesis explores the state-labour nexus emerging out of the processes through which governing authorities have attempted to maintain or regain political stability and rates of accumulation in Malay(a)sia. Existing studies usefully highlight the extent to which repressive industrial relations legislation and ethnic communalism have weakened the trade union movement and segmented the labour force delivering the relative industrial peace attractive to foreign investors. Some suggest labour’s discontent at this repression has been successfully contained by Malaysia’s relatively strong economic performance. These approaches, however, only partially acknowledge the extent to which labour’s social reproduction under capitalist relations generates political and economic contradictions. After an initial failure to address these contradictions in the early post-colonial era, the Malay-dominated government has since developed avenues through which to deliver economic and cultural concessions in a selective and paternalistic fashion. This economic paternalism has contributed to social stability but has diverted funds from economic development and now runs contrary to structural reforms that seek to address Malaysia’s declining international competitiveness. The transition towards a knowledge-based economy, referred to locally as the k-economy, therefore embodies efforts by the political elite to contain political and societal tensions emerging out of the reform process. This thesis demonstrates and analyses the dynamic, contingent and uneven nature of these efforts as the government seeks to establish new bases of legitimacy more closely linked to household consumption concerns than iii ethnicity.
