Bunting-Hudson All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT The Art of the Hustle: A Study of the Rap Music Industry in Bogota, Colombia Laura L. Bunting-Hudson How do rap artists in Bogota, Colombia come together to make music? What is the process they take to commodify their culture? Why are some rappers able to become socially mobile in this process, while others are less so? What is technology’s role in all of this? This ethnography explores those questions, as it carefully documents the strategies utilized by various rap groups in Bogota, Colombia to create social mobility, commoditize products and to create a different vision of modernity within the hip-hop community, as an alternative to the ideals set forth by mainstream Colombian society. Resistance Art Poetry (RAP), is said to have originated in the United States but has become a form of international music. In conducting ethnographic research from December of 2012 to October 2014, I was able to discover how rappers organize themselves politically, how they commoditize their products and distribute them to create various types of social mobilities. In this dissertation, I constructed models to typologize rap groups in Bogota, Colombia, which I call polities of rappers to discuss how these groups come together, take shape, make plans and execute them to reach their business goals. -

Hip Hop Lesson Plan Hip Hop Education Lesson Plan Subject: English Lit. Theme: Incarceration Lesson Overview This lesson is primarily focused on the theme of incarceration in two hip hop texts (both appendicized): One verse from ‘One Love’ by Nas, and another plus a chorus from ‘Up North Trip’ by Mobb Deep. The lesson is designed to have students critically analyse literary techniques and concepts from each text, and then go on to identify, analyse and ultimately compare and contrast the key themes and ideas present. Fear of incarceration amongst urban youth, the effect of prison on the psyche, violence in and outside of prison, are all ideas to be looked at concerning the lesson’s main theme, but outside of that I would also expect students to identify secondary themes present in the text (with teacher guidance if necessary), namely crime in general and representations of ‘the hood’. Ultimately this lesson aims to allow students to partake in ‘literary interpretation and criticism -

Abstract Jordan III, Augustus W. B.S. Florida A&M University, 1994 A Study of Language and Ideology in Rap Music Advisor: Dr. O. Osinubi Dissertation Dated June 5,1998 This study examined the language of Hip-Hop songs and ideology of the artists as reflected through their songs. The study was based on the theory that Hip-Hop or rap songs are legitimate artforms because of their use of poetic elements such as figuration, figures of sound, symbolism, and ambiguity. The study recorded and interpreted the lyrics of a few current rap songs for the purpose of investigating their poetical and ideological elements. The researcher found signification battles by some rap artists as the best examples of songs which express the richness and complexity of Hip-Hop music. The researcher found that both Hip-Hop music lyrics and standard poetry have many similarities, but also have a few different features which enhance their uniqueness. The conclusions drawn from the findings suggest that the main reason many critics do not consider Hip-Hop or rap music an artform, is that they either compare the music to something extremely different, or they simply do not take the time to listen to its songs. Rap Music is an artform that expresses poetic elements and utilizes electronic devices, thus making it a Postmodernist popular artform. Frank Zappa, Captain Beefheart and the Secret History of Maximalism Michel Delville is a writer and musician living in Liège, Belgium. He is the author of several books including J.G. Ballard and The American Prose Poem, which won the 1998 SAMLA Studies Book Award. He teaches English and American literatures, as well as comparative literatures, at the University of Liège, where he directs the Interdisciplinary Center for Applied Poetics. He has been playing and composing music since the mid-eighties. His most recently formed rock-jazz band, the Wrong Object, plays the music of Frank Zappa and a few tunes of their own (http://www.wrongobject.be.tf). Andrew Norris is a writer and musician resident in Brussels. He has worked with a number of groups as vocalist and guitarist and has a special weakness for the interface between avant garde poetry and the blues. He teaches English and translation studies in Brussels and is currently writing a book on post-epiphanic style in James Joyce. “The Blueprint”--Jay-Z (2001) Added to the National Registry: 2018 Essay by Zack O’Malley Greenburg (guest post)* Original CD cover A son of Brooklyn’s notorious housing projects who became hip-hop’s first billionaire in 2019, Jay-Z is as close as it gets to the modern-day embodiment of the American dream. So it’s only fitting that “The Blueprint,” one of the most noteworthy albums of the aughts, is the first 21st century recording selected for the National Recording Registry. Jay-Z’s sixth studio album arrived on September 11, 2001, and could have been lost amid the ensuing wave of national mourning. Instead, “Blueprint” ended up as a soundtrack of sorts-- mirroring the heady mix of pride and paranoia that permeated the post-September 11th United States. A classic album in any era, fate deposited it just in time to mirror an American moment when wound-licking gave way to a defiant indomitability. At the time, Jay-Z’s foes included a burgeoning roster of rival rappers, most notably Queens native Nas (a challenger for the King of New York crown) and the justice system, which had placed Jay-Z in legal limbo over the attack of a producer thought to have bootlegged his prior album (Jay-Z would eventually receive probation). He was also years into a prescient Grammy boycott—“Blueprint” would later be shut out at music’s biggest night despite vast critical acclaim. Backed by a battalion of producers including Timbaland, Just Blaze and a young Kanye West, Jay-Z caps “Blueprint’s” opening salvo by pronouncing himself “God MC, me, Jay-Hova.” Though he slings a few barbs at Mobb Deep’s Prodigy, his real target is archrival Nas, who’d questioned Jay-Z’s underworld credentials in a radio freestyle that evolved into one of hip-hop’s most legendary verbal confrontations. -

FLORIDA A&M UNIVERSITY, 1994 M.A. CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY, 1998 THE IDEOLOGICAL AND NARRATIVE STRUCTURES OF HIP-HOP MUSIC: A STUDY OF SELECTED HIP-HOP ARTISTS Advisor: Dr. Viktor Osinubi Dissertation Dated May 2009 This study examined the discourse of selected Hip-Hop artists and the biographical aspects of the works. The study was based on the structuralist theory of Roland Barthes which claims that many times a performer’s life experiences with class struggle are directly reflected in his artistic works. Since rap music is a counter-culture invention which was started by minorities in the South Bronx borough ofNew York over dissatisfaction with their community, it is a cultural phenomenon that fits into the category of economic and political class struggle. The study recorded and interpreted the lyrics of New York artists Shawn Carter (Jay Z), Nasir Jones (Nas), and southern artists Clifford Harris II (T.I.) and Wesley Weston (Lii’ Flip). The artists were selected on the basis of geographical spread and diversity. Although Hip-Hop was again founded in New York City, it has now spread to other parts of the United States and worldwide. The study investigated the biography of the artists to illuminate their struggles with poverty, family dysfunction, aggression, and intimidation. 1 The artists were found to engage in lyrical battles; therefore, their competitive discourses were analyzed in specific Hip-Hop selections to investigate their claims of authorship, imitation, and authenticity, including their use of sexual discourse and artistic rivalry, to gain competitive advantage.
