Allen Book Reviews 52 Ethnicity and Race in a Changing World: A Review Journal Editorial Statement This issue contains two peer reviewed essays and two Comments. These pieces deal with issues of Culture and Identity in various settings, as does the Extended Review, crucially provides the necessary contextualisation necessary for moving these discussions forward. The first essay, ‘Failure is not an Option: Parental Expectations of Nigerian Voluntary Immigrants to the United States’ by Dolapo Adeniji-Neill, analyses these issues in the context immigration and its consequences. The author seeks an explanation for the success in education attributed to new African immigrants to the United States, and their children. Dr. Adeniji-Neill investigates the relationship among three factors: parental expectations; socio-cultural experiences; and (adult) children’s internalisation of their parents’ aspirations for them. The conclusion is that Nigerian culture has a strong influence on the upbringing and fulfilment of expectations for the children of the participants. It is important to note that these debates have focused in the past on the performance of children of ‘West Indian’ immigrants to the United States in the mid-twentieth century. The second essay, ‘Class Status and the Construction of Black Masculinity’ by Trevor B. Milton, looks at the issues of Culture and Identity in the context of Black Masculinity. Milton argues, ‘Black Masculinity and its attributes are decreasingly influenced by one’s racial designation and are more influenced by class status’. He identifies the spread of these attitudes across racial boundaries and links ‘poor opportunity structure’ with limitations on the expression of patriarchal male power. This linkage raises fundamental questions about the centrality of patriarchy in the United States and other Western countries, which pride themselves on their commitment to gender equality, at least in principle. The separation of racial designation and class status for analytic purposes in this essay raises questions about the utility of such an approach in societies organised on the basis of structural racism. The Comment piece by David L. Brunsma and Priya Dua, ‘The Structure and Process of Racial Identification of Multiracial Infants in the United States: A Research Note’, analyses the ways in which that new parents of multiracial babies classify their six to twenty-two-month old infants. The authors found a range of categorisation among parents with differing ethnicity identifications, and conclude that these illustrate ‘the nature of race relations, processes of racialization, the structure of racial stratification, and the enigmatic relationship between racial identity and racial identification’. Thomas J. Keil and Jacqueline M. Keil’s ‘The Characteristics of the Congressional District and Tea Party Victories in 2010’, analyses the centrality of racial identity in the origins, character and successes of the Tea Party in the United States’ 2010 mid-term elections. Keil and Keil examined the webpages of 137 Tea Party backed candidates to determine the commonalities and differences in their campaign materials on their websites. They were not surprised to find the positive effect of percentage White on the electoral success of the Tea Party candidate but were by the absence of an effect of status, especially in terms of income and unemployment levels. They conclude that: ‘In some sense, then, the 2010 election was a racial referendum – a reaction by Whites who wanted to ‘take back’ ‘their country’ from the usurpers who had won the 2008 election…. There is a sense among White voters that Whiteness has been devalued as a form of social capital by Mr. Obama’s election and that Blacks, especially, as well as other minorities are receiving disproportionate benefits from his administration’. The Extended Review by Antoinette L. Allen is a review essay on Acting White: The Curious History of the Racial Slur by Ron Christie. This fits it with the theme of Culture and Identity in that Christie argues I Ethnicity and Race in a Changing World: A Review Journal that there is a Black mindset that: ‘prides itself on victimization, government quotas to move ahead, cultural

Bunting-Hudson All Rights Reserved ABSTRACT The Art of the Hustle: A Study of the Rap Music Industry in Bogota, Colombia Laura L. Bunting-Hudson How do rap artists in Bogota, Colombia come together to make music? What is the process they take to commodify their culture? Why are some rappers able to become socially mobile in this process, while others are less so? What is technology’s role in all of this? This ethnography explores those questions, as it carefully documents the strategies utilized by various rap groups in Bogota, Colombia to create social mobility, commoditize products and to create a different vision of modernity within the hip-hop community, as an alternative to the ideals set forth by mainstream Colombian society. Resistance Art Poetry (RAP), is said to have originated in the United States but has become a form of international music. In conducting ethnographic research from December of 2012 to October 2014, I was able to discover how rappers organize themselves politically, how they commoditize their products and distribute them to create various types of social mobilities. In this dissertation, I constructed models to typologize rap groups in Bogota, Colombia, which I call polities of rappers to discuss how these groups come together, take shape, make plans and execute them to reach their business goals.

FLORIDA A&M UNIVERSITY, 1994 M.A. CLARK ATLANTA UNIVERSITY, 1998 THE IDEOLOGICAL AND NARRATIVE STRUCTURES OF HIP-HOP MUSIC: A STUDY OF SELECTED HIP-HOP ARTISTS Advisor: Dr. Viktor Osinubi Dissertation Dated May 2009 This study examined the discourse of selected Hip-Hop artists and the biographical aspects of the works. The study was based on the structuralist theory of Roland Barthes which claims that many times a performer’s life experiences with class struggle are directly reflected in his artistic works. Since rap music is a counter-culture invention which was started by minorities in the South Bronx borough ofNew York over dissatisfaction with their community, it is a cultural phenomenon that fits into the category of economic and political class struggle. The study recorded and interpreted the lyrics of New York artists Shawn Carter (Jay Z), Nasir Jones (Nas), and southern artists Clifford Harris II (T.I.) and Wesley Weston (Lii’ Flip). The artists were selected on the basis of geographical spread and diversity. Although Hip-Hop was again founded in New York City, it has now spread to other parts of the United States and worldwide. The study investigated the biography of the artists to illuminate their struggles with poverty, family dysfunction, aggression, and intimidation. 1 The artists were found to engage in lyrical battles; therefore, their competitive discourses were analyzed in specific Hip-Hop selections to investigate their claims of authorship, imitation, and authenticity, including their use of sexual discourse and artistic rivalry, to gain competitive advantage.

    In Search of the Golden Age Hip-Hop Sound (1986–1996) BEN DUINKER Department of Music Theory, Schulich School of Music, McGill University DENIS MARTIN Department of Sound Recording, Schulich School of Music, McGill University ABSTRACT: The notion of a musical repertoire’s “sound” is frequently evoked in journalism and scholarship, but what parameters comprise such a sound? This question is addressed through a statistically-driven corpus analysis of hip-hop music released during the genre’s Golden Age era. The first part of the paper presents a methodology for developing, transcribing, and analyzing a corpus of 100 hip-hop tracks released during the Golden Age. Eight categories of aurally salient musical and production parameters are analyzed: tempo, orchestration and texture, harmony, form, vocal and lyric profiles, global and local production effects, vocal doubling and backing, and loudness and compression. The second part of the paper organizes the analysis data into three trend categories: trends of change (parameters that change over time), trends of prevalence (parameters that remain generally constant across the corpus), and trends of similarity (parameters that are similar from song to song). These trends form a generalized model of the Golden Age hip-hop sound which considers both global (the whole corpus) and local (unique songs within the corpus) contexts. By operationalizing “sound” as the sum of musical and production parameters, aspects of popular music that are resistant to traditional music-analytical methods can be considered. It argues that there are many different, though overlapping, approaches to making sociopolitically engaged poetry. Understanding political poetry as a collection of multiple rhetorical strategies moves away from identity- based and subject-based criticism. This project thus considers a number of representative poems from each strategy in order to illuminate each strategy’s intricacies. Further, the contention that hip hop has the most political potential of contemporary poetries suggests convergences with strategies for making printed poetry political. The framework for understanding both hip hop and printed poetry is derived from theories of agency that negotiate the individual’s ability to act according to her purposes in relation to the determining economic, political, and social forces that constrain action. The strategies considered thus emerge from various types of poetic agency: embodied agency, including both experiential and authoritative agency; equivocal agency, including comprehensive and particular varieties; migratory agency; and contestatory urban agency, which includes strategies indigenous to hip hop.
