Each year, The Community Foundation receives gifts of all sizes from individuals, foundations and corporations. These generous gifts are used to support programs that improve the quality of life for residents of Richmond and Central Virginia. In anticipation of The Community Foundation’s 50th Anniversary in 2018, The Community Foundation announces the RVA Visionary Society—a special giving opportunity that offers visionary donors a way to lead that will benefit the Richmond and Central Virginia Region 50 and 100 years from now. The concept is inspired by Benjamin Franklin, who left bequests to Boston and Philadelphia predicated on their stewardship of the asset for 100 years before expending funds to benefit their citizens.

The goal is to raise $2.5 million for the RVA Visionary Society by 2018, which, with compounding interest, is anticipated to produce at least $100 million by TCF’s 100th anniversary in 2068. At that time, 80% of the funds will begin to support the most pressing needs of our community, while the remainder will be invested for another 50 years.

Members who contribute $25,000 and Friends who contribute a minimum of $5,000 will be announced at the Foundation’s 50th anniversary luncheon and recognized in annual reports going forward.

The Community Foundation is about connecting people with causes that matter to them. For many, the joy of philanthropy comes from the people and organizations they are able to meet along the way. Even if you are not ready to establish your own charitable fund, we offer several opportunities to join with like-minded members of the community to make a difference.

GiveRichmond GiveRichmond.org is a free online tool designed to encourage charitable giving within the Richmond and Central Virginia region. The website provides detailed financial, governance and programmatic information about hundreds of local nonprofits. Individuals have an opportunity to enhance their knowledge of community issues and to give directly to nonprofits of their choice.

Impact 100 Richmond Initiated by an enthusiastic group of volunteers in 2009, Impact 100 Richmond is a grassroots effort that champions the power of women giving together. The goal is to change the lives of women and their families by transforming a local nonprofit through a significant, collective financial investment.

SisterFund SisterFund brings together civic-minded African American women who wish to leverage their resources to increase the impact of their giving. Their grants are focused on nonprofits that help African American women and girls build a positive future through gains in education, workforce, leadership development, and their health.

Ujima Legacy Fund The Ujima Legacy Fund is a giving circle created by and for civic-minded African American men to have a greater philanthropic impact in the Metro Richmond community. The fund supports projects that will have a positive impact on youth and young adults (ages 12 to 21 years), with a particular emphasis on underserved youth populations.

Youth Philanthropy Project The Youth Philanthropy Project, a partnership between The Community Foundation and HandsOn Greater Richmond, is led by a committee of area high school students who are responsible for awarding grants to support youth-led community service projects.

An attractive alternative to a private foundation, a supporting organization allows individuals and families to participate in governance, investment management and a grant-focused program at fraction of the administrative cost or responsibilities of a private foundation.

Commonwealth Foundation for Cancer Research Bill and Alice Goodwin established the Commonwealth Foundation for Cancer Research in 2002 after witnessing several friends and family members battle with cancer. The Foundation provides funding to several institutions that show promising results in helping to move potential treatments for cancer from the laboratory to human trials.

Jane & Arthur Flippo Endowment Foundation Jane and Arthur Flippo were generous benefactors in their home community of Hanover County throughout their lifetimes. In 2013, their private foundation was converted into a supporting organization to continue their charitable legacy in perpetuity. The Foundation will support literary, scientific and educational programs, with preference given to organizations principally serving Hanover, Caroline and King William Counties.

Jenkins Foundation The Jenkins Foundation was formed in 1995 following the sale of Retreat Hospital. Honoring the legacy of the hospital’s founder Annabella Jenkins, the Foundation is committed to providing compassionate care for the medically underserved. Grants are awarded in three strategic areas: access to community-based health care for the uninsured and underserved, substance abuse prevention and violence prevention.

The Ann K. Kirby Foundation The Ann K. Kirby Foundation represents a family legacy of giving that spans several generations. In 2015, the former private foundation converted to become the newest of TCF’s supporting organizations. Grantmaking supports a wide range of charitable purposes including health, education, environmental causes, fine and performing arts, historical preservation and faith-based ministries in Richmond and other communities with strong family ties.

The Pauley Family Foundation In 2011, The Pauley Family Foundation converted into a supporting organization. Established by Stanley and Dorothy Pauley, the Foundation supports a broad range of charitable purposes in the Richmond region, with a focus on education, health and human services.

R.E.B. Foundation Rudolph and Esther Bunzl formed a partnership with The Community Foundation in 1987 to launch an awards program recognizing the contributions of outstanding public school teachers. In 1988, the Bunzls converted their private foundation into the first ever supporting organization. The R.E.B. Foundation now supports the R.E.B. Awards for Teaching Excellence, the R.E.B. Awards for Distinguished Educational Leadership and annual grants to educational, cultural and social service programs.

The Community Foundation provides adminstrative and operational support to the following community initiatives, which all serve purposes complimentary to our charitable mission and priorities.

NextUp RVA NextUp RVA, previously known as MSR 2020, is a collaborative community initiative working to ensure that Richmond Public School’s middle school students engage in meaningful Out-of-School Time programs. Through an integrated system, NextUp RVA supports and sustains after-school programs across the city by improving quality and expanding access to programs that foster academic and social benefits.

Partnership for Nonprofit Excellence Created in 2006, the Partnership for Nonprofit Excellence is a nonprofit resource center that provides local nonprofits with the tools they need to improve their effectiveness and efficiency for greater impact. The Partnership’s services are focused in four key areas: professional and leadership development; organizational and board development; volunteer opportunities, training and management; and, technology, training and communication.

Barbara J. Thalhimer & William B. Thalhimer Jr. Family Fund In 2006, the Thalhimer family converted their private foundation into a donor advised fund, which continues 60 years of grantmaking inspired by the charitable vision of Barbara and Billy Thalhimer. Today, the fund is advised by their children and grandchildren to support religious (Jewish), educational, cultural and humanitarian organizations in the Greater Richmond area.

Regional Affiliates

Since 1996, The Community Foundation Serving Richmond and Central Virginia has helped to create three community foundations in the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula of Virginia. Each affiliate is made of up funds created by local donors to support charitable purposes in their respective geographic service areas. Those funds are not listed here, but can be found in annual reports published by each affiliate.

Gloucester Community Foundation In 2000, the Gloucester Community Foundation was created to serve, preserve and enhance the quality of life in Gloucester County through philanthropy. Northumberland

Mathews Community Foundation

The Mathews Community Foundation was created in 1999 to build Lancaster community endowments that will serve to strengthen the social, Richmond Middlesex educational, cultural and environmental fabric of Mathews County Mathews in perpetuity. Gloucester

River Counties Community Foundation In 1996, the River Counties Community Foundation was created to become the first regional affiliate of The Community Foundation. It has become widely known as a local philanthropic resource for both donors and nonprofits in Lancaster, Middlesex and Northumberland Counties.
