manufacturer Jaguar from 1975 to 1996. The XJ-S replaced the E-Type (or XK-E) in September 1975, and was based on the XJ saloon. It had been developed as the XK-F, though it was very different in character from its predecessor. Although it never had quite the same sporting image, the XJ-S was a competent grand tourer, and more aerodynamic than the E-Type.[3] The last XJS was produced on 4 April 1996, by then 115,413 had been produced during a 21-year production life. The model was replaced by the XK8. Power came from the Jaguar V-12 petrol engine with a choice of a manual or automatic transmission, but the manual was soon dropped. V-12 automobiles were unusual at the time, with notable others coming from Italian luxury sports car makers Lamborghini and Ferrari. The specifications of the XJ-S compared well with both Italian cars; it was able to accelerate to 60 mph (97 km/h) in 7.6 seconds (automatic) and had a top speed of 143 mph (230 km/h).[4] The first series of XJ-S cars had a Borg-Warner Model 12 transmission with a cast-iron case and a bolt-on bell-housing. -

LOLA AT 60 WE CELEBRATE ONE OF THE GREAT RACING CAR CONSTRUCTORS Including FROM BROADLEY TO BIRRANE GREATEST CARS LOLA’S SECRET WEAPON THE AUDI CHALLENGER The success of the Mk1 sports-racer, usually powered by the Coventry Climax 1100cc FWA engine, brought Lola Cars into existence. It overshadowed the similar e orts of Lotus boss Colin Chapman and remained competitive for several seasons. We believe it is one of designer Eric Broadleyʼs greatest cars, so turn to page 16 to see what our resident racer made of the original prototype at Donington Park. Although the coupe is arguably more iconic, the open version of the T70 was more successful. Developed in 1965, the Group 7 machine could take a number of di erent V8 engines and was ideal for the inaugural Can-Am contest in ʼ66. Champion John Surtees, Dan Gurney and Mark Donohue won races during the campaign, while Surtees was the only non-McLaren winner in ʼ67. The big Lola remains a force in historic racing. När mästerskapet i helgen når klassiska Brands Hatch utanför London ställs de tre svenskarna Ola Nilsson, Rasmus Mårthen och Mikaela Åhlin-Kottulinsky mot inte färre än sex tidigare Formel 1-förare – anförda av 1996 års världsmästare Damon Hill. Säsongens tredje deltävling tar, till viss del, mästerskapet in i nästa fas. De två inledande racen – där det ena vanns av Nilsson – markerade något av en prolog för serien, med bara halv poängutdelning för att ge nykomlingarna i fältet en ärlig chans att anpassa sig till sin nya omgivning. Från och med i helgen är det dock fullskalig utdelning som gäller, med 60 poäng för seger istället för de 30 som hittills har stått på spel. Att den inte ens två kilometer långa så kallade Indy-slingan på Brands Hatch dessutom är den kortaste – och därmed mest intensiva – banan på kalendern bäddar för ytterligare dramatik.
