WORLD CLASS MULTISPORT RACING IN TEMECULA VALLEY

For the fourth straight season Vail Lake Resort will host the XTERRA West Championship off-road tri’s, duathlon, trail runs, and lifestyle sports festival.

"With its huge base of athletes, passion for athletics, and pioneering accomplishments in the field of , Southern is truly the home of multisport and it is great that we have found a venue here where the XTERRA Tribe can come together," said TEAM Unlimited President Janet Clark. "For so many reasons - the trails, the proximity to L.A. and San Diego, the camping - Vail Lake is becoming one of our greatest venues."

The main event features some of the world's finest athletes challenging Mother Nature, and each other, in a 1.5-kilometer swim, followed by a 30k mountain bike and 10k trail run. The pros will be competing for fame and cash ($20,000 purse) while amateurs race for a berth into the XTERRA World Championship, and national recognition in the XTERRA America Tour.

The weekend schedule will include an XTERRA Duathlon (3k run, 15k mtb, 5k run), 5k walk to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Fourdation, 5k, 10k, and 21k trail runs, free XTERRA University clinics, an outdoor expo with music and demos, and the XTERRA Kids Zone with free running and bike races just for the youngsters.

CHALLENGED ATHLETES FOUNDATION 8 OFF-ROAD SPORTS FESTIVAL XTERRA VAIL LAKE 5K WALK & 5K & 10K TRAIL RUN

presented by Hawaiian Airlines

A benefit for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation - Inland Empire Chapter

Forget boring old road runs that conquer miles and miles of concrete and asphalt, the XTERRA Vail Lake Trail Run is a "mud in your eye, don't twist your ankle on that rock" kind of run. Get dirty, and deal with the elements Mother Nature dishes out. There are spots on this course where there isn't even a trail, just a red arrow half-mile away telling you where to go. It's up to you to pick your route, and the fun is in choosing which way to go. These are, in fact, the same 5k and 10k paths that Sunday's XTERRA competitors will tackle on their way to the finish line. Get to know Temecula Valley in a whole new way - all while breathing in some fresh air and exercising your way to the start of a great day. Awards go to the top three in each age group and the 10k women's winner earns roundtrip airfare to Hawaii from Hawaiian Airlines. Wahine holo nui! Hawaiian Airlines way of saying, 'run fast young lady!' Of course the true beauty of the Trail Runs and 5k walk is the cause, with proceeds benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation - Inland Empire Chapter.

XTERRA DUATHLON

Some guys and gals just don't swim and if you're one of them, this race is for you. Competitors will start with a 3k (1.9 mile) off-road trail run, follow with a 15k (9.3 mile) mountain bike, and finish up with a 5k (3.1 mile) trail run. It's open to athletes of all ages and skill levels, and you can even race it as a two-or-three person relay team. The rugged off-road trails are identical to those being used for the main event. The mountain bike course offers plenty of challenge, with leg-burning climbs and twisting, technical downhills. The reward for your work on the ascents is the panoramic views of Temecula Valley at each peak, and the exhilarating rides back down. 9 OFF-ROAD SPORTS FESTIVAL XTERRA UNIVERSITY Presented by Paul Mitchell

Learn the art of XTERRA from the best off-road multisport athletes on the planet. XTERRA U is a must for first- timers and anyone looking to sharpen their skills in swimming, mountain biking, trail running, and nutrition. The pros will even break down into Temecula course specifics and answer any and all questions. Best part is, these hands-on clinics are FREE.

Attend all the lessons or pick your discipline (see schedule for start times); - Mountain Biking with Jamie Whitmore and Mike Vine. - Swimming with Candy Angle and Craig Evans. - The Art of XTERRA (Transition, Nutrition, Training, and Course Tips) with expert panel of Josiah Middaugh, Jenny Smith, Conrad Stoltz, and Melanie McQuaid. BREEDER’S CHOICE XTERRA K9 CHALLENGE Made for Fun obstacle course time trials for dogs and their owners

A 20-yard sprint, a speed-crawl through a tunnel, a bounding leap over a 2-foot-high block, a hairpin turn into a set of mixed sized step-overs, another cutting turn to a teeter-totter, up, over, one last jump, then a 15-yard sprint to the finish. No, it’s not the latest version of American Gladiator or a behemoth football player tackling the agility drill at the NFL Combine, this is the brand new Breeder’s Choice XTERRA K9 Challenge - a timed race with owner-dog teams competing against the clock on a combined trail run and obstacle course. Completing the challenge will take anywhere from 20 seconds to one minute, and it’s not limited to highly trained or specialized dogs so all are welcome to participate in this “made for fun” event.

10 XTERRA RACING

RELAY TEAM CHALLENGE Athletes now have more incentive than ever to forge together units of two or three people and challenge XTERRA as a team in either the sport or championship race. The top three teams in each relay division will get invited to race for the national team championship at Lake Tahoe (Oct. 4), GU is giving away generous heaps of swags to participants, and entry fees were slashed dramatically for teams. This is the best way to get started in XTERRA, and the crew will even help pair up individuals, so if you need a teammate to complete a relay squad, simply send an e-mail to [email protected]. XTERRA SPORT

Jumping into a full-distance XTERRA the first time out can be intimidating – that’s why organizers created the XTERRA Sport race. The sport competition uses the same course, but cuts each discipline in half. This race is ideal for newcomers, offering a great introduction to the rigors of XTERRA.

750-METER SWIM - 15-KILOMETER MTB - 5K TRAIL RUN

THE MAIN EVENT

At the XTERRA West Championship professional athletes vie for thousands in cash while amateurs race for points towards regional standings and spots into the XTERRA USA and World Championship races. Read on for information on how the series works, a course description, pro purse distribution, last year’s winners and more...

1.5K SWIM - 30K MOUNTAIN BIKE - 10K TRAIL RUN

11 THE TEMECULA COURSE

The swim is in Vail Lake, an 800-acre private lake in Temecula Valley. The water is expected to be somewhere in the mid-to-high 60's. Championship racers swim one 1,500-meter lap (750 meters for Sport competitors). The 30-kilometer mountain bike course (15k Sport) offers a variety of terrain challenges and lots of rolling hills with rocks and boulders and soft dirt or mud depending on the weather. There are quite a few climbs, each offering magnificent views of the Valley from the top, followed by quick descents on twisting single track. The bike-to-run transition is back at the lake, giving friends and family the chance to cheer. Like the bike course, the 10k trail run (5k Sport) heads up and down several rolling hills. There are wide open sections and sections that run through dense trees. The finish line is back where it all started, down by the lake.

35 XTERRA AMERICA TOUR The XTERRA America Tour is designed to provide age group athletes with a bona-fide championship to compete for within their geographic region. At the end of the regular season the top performers in each of eight regions are invited to compete against other athletes their same age - but from different regions - at the national championship in Nevada on October 5. This year there are 60 races in 32 states across the country, as well as the U.S. Territories of Guam and Saipan. It marks the 12th straight year of expansion for the sport of XTERRA.

Here's how the Series works: 1) There are eight regions, determined by a competitor's primary residence at the time of their first race:

NORTH EAST (NE) - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York. MID ATLANTIC (MA) - Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, , West Virginia, Washington D.C. SOUTH EAST (SE) - Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands NORTH CENTRAL (NC) - Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky. SOUTH CENTRAL (SC) - Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, . MOUNTAIN (MT) - Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming. NORTH WEST (NW) - Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska. SOUTH WEST (SW) - California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Guam, Northern Marianas Islands, Pacific Territories.

2) Age Group: "XTERRA Age" is based on a competitor's age on December 31, 2008. Athletes compete in the following age categories: 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60+ (w), 60-64 (m), 65-69 (m), 70+ (m), the Physically Challenged Division (15-39 and 40+) in five categores = severe leg impairment, les autres, arm impair- ment, moderate leg impairment, and visual impairment/legally blind, and new for 2008 the Collegiate Division (see p 37).

3) Series competitors race for points at their choice of 60 events - including XTERRA Points Series (XPS) races & XTERRA Championship Series (XCS) races. Competitors are required to race and count points in at least one event in his/her region. Competitors can enter as many events as they'd like, however, they count just their best three finishes.

4) Points are awarded to the top 15 finishers in each age group at each race. If you race at more than one XTERRA Championship event, only the best finish counts at full points. Any other finishes earn points at the same rate as the XTERRA Points Series races. There are two points systems: 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th 11th 12th 13th 14th 15th XTERRA Championship Series: 100 90 82 75 69 63 58 53 49 45 41 37 34 31 28 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th 11th 12th 13th 14th 15th XTERRA Points Series: 75 67 61 56 51 47 43 39 36 33 30 27 25 23 21

5) The highest points scorers in each region are invited to compete for a national title at the XTERRA USA Championship in Nevada (qualifying spots based on chart below). The competitor with the most points in their age group in each XTERRA Region earns the title of XTERRA Regional Champion, and wins a custom racing jersey.

HERE’S HOW IT WORKS: Any collegian with a current photo ID can race for their school as an individual. You do need to be a member of a school club or team. There are no age groups in the collegiate division, just male and female categories. Collegiate racers do not collect points in the XTERRA America Tour Series and are not eligible for age group awards - they only race against other collegiate entries. Whenever there are three athletes from two or more schools entered in the same race they’ll go against each other for school pride in the college team division. There must be at least two schools with teams for a team award to be presented. A “team” must consist of at least 3 male or female members. There are no mixed teams. A team can have more entrants, but less than three will not constitute a team. Points for team awards (male and female) will count the finishing positions of the smallest number entered by a qualifying team. Example: College A has 5 men; College B has 7 men; College C has 9 men. Only the fastest 5 finishers will count towards the team awards. Points for team awards will be calculated based on the finishing positions of the team members. The lowest total is the winner. Example: Each team counts 3 athletes. Team A finishes 1, 8 and 15 overall for a total number 24. Team B finishes 5, 6 and 10 for a total number 21. Team C finishes 2, 9 and 20 for a total number of 31. Team B wins. In no case will more than 7 athletes count towards the team awards regardless of the total number of entries by any one team. Should a club enter more than 7 men or women, the coach must nominate the 7 individuals he wants scored for team awards. Other members are still eligible for individual awards, but their finishing position will not be counted towards the team totals. Positions counted are overall positions in gender, not just collegiate entrants. This would include professional entries. Collegiate Cup: A Collegiate Cup award will be given when two or more schools have at least 3 men and 3 women per school represent- ed. Example: College A has 5 men, 2 women; College B has 7 men, 3 women. There can be no Collegiate Cup award as there are not 2 teams that meet the overall requirements. Should two or more schools have the necessary entries scoring will be similar to the team scoring method with all finishing positions of qualified team members added. Also: Collegiate entrants race for separate awards. Awards will be presented to the top three male and female individual collegiate division finishers, the winning men’s and women’s teams, and the winner of the Collegiate Cup competition (if applicable). Pre-Registration is required for the XTERRA Collegiate Cup to be presented. Athletes competing in the Collegiate Division do not prevent XTERRA Age Group athletes from receiving XTERRA America Tour points. 41 THE 2008 XTERRA TRAIL RUNNING SERIES

At the heart of XTERRA is the fundamental idea of putting on great races in epic places with friendly faces. Pretty simple, really, but it’s a formula that has proven successful over the years and that same philosophy is being used to grow the XTERRA Trail Run Series. Now in its fourth year as a stand-alone set of races outside of the off-road triathlon circuit, the XTERRA Trail Run Series boasts 50 runs in 16 states and 8 countries, giving runners the opportunity to race their way around the world…literally. New in 2008 is the focus on the off-road half-marathon distance, what XTERRA calls an “Xduro”. When asked about the paradigm shift (XTERRA Trail Runs used to be mostly 5k and 10k runs) Tom Kiely, CEO of XTERRA, explained that “after 12 years of producing trail runs along- side our XTERRA off-road triathlons we’ve learned that our audience wanted a bigger challenge than a 10k. Lightweight XTERRA Shoes Designed to Help Athletes Stalk Their On-Course Prey

TJ Gray and Ashley Brown — designers of XTERRA’s new line of footwear and apparel — stood at the finish line of the XTERRA World Championship in Maui last October. While many of the competitors lay in bed the night before counting sheep in anticipation of the race, that afternoon Gray and Brown were counting shoes. Road shoe, road shoe, road shoe. As athletes poured down from the lower slopes of Mount Haleakala from their nearly seven-mile trail run over roots, rocks and ravines, Gray and Brown couldn’t believe their eyes. “Maybe one in 100 was a trail runner,” said Brown, who along with partner Gray have also developed shoes for Nike, adidas and Salomon. “They were all sacrificing sta- bility for less weight.” They returned to the drawing board, determined to make XTERRA the lightest — but still, most stable — trail running shoe on the market. 44 XTERRA ECO TEAM

The Eco Team is an athlete initiated program to engage the XTERRA community in environmental initiatives to help protect and preserve the areas we race in, and give back to the communities that host us. The program started in 2007 by organizing ecological restoration work parties at our race venues and initiating a gear recycling program for donation to local bicycle advocacy programs.

Highlights from 2007 include:

- At the XTERRA World Championship in Maui nearly 20 volunteers gathered for a three-mile trash sweep that extended from the far side of Makena “Big” Beach along the coast back to the host hotel at the Maui Prince.

- At the XTERRA USA Championship in Nevada the XTERRA Eco Team, with more than a dozen volunteers, planted 10 trees, mixed and poured over 30 bags of concrete for the foundation of bear-proof recycling boxes, installed 7 stream and natural habitat protection signs, and filled several trash bags with litter picked up along 5 miles of trail and a stream in Incline Village.

- In August in North Bend, WA the XTERRA Eco Team joined forces with Seattle's Back Country Bicycle Trails Club (BBTC) to restore a section of a popular mountain bike trail in the North Cascades. More than a dozen volun- teers worked 15ft of trail "turnpike" that had been damaged by winter storms. The crew scrounged for rock and mineral soil to make the section suitable for horses and mountain bikes.

- Back in July for the XTERRA Vashon Island race XTERRA athletes cleaned out their garages for the Eco Team’s first "bike-cycling" event. At the race they collected bicycle parts, clothing, and any bike related com- ponents for donation to Seattle's BikeWorks: a bicycle advocacy non-profit that teaches bicycle maintenance skills to children of low-income families. BikeWorks uses donated equipment to teach teens how to build or repair bikes and teens are allowed to keep the bikes they build. Younger children receive free bikes from Bikeworks and earn prizes for the number of miles they ride. BikeWorks also donates recycled bicycles to The Village Project in Africa. Gear donations were already piled up at the registration table one hour before the race, and the two boxes the ECO TEAM brought were at capacity as soon as they were set down. Donations included tires and tubes, new bike clothing and socks, seats, pedals, cables, chains, cranks, wheel sets, bike shoes, lights, water bottles, stickers, a steel roadbike frame, and a wonderful kids' BMX bike!

In 2008 and beyond the XTERRA Eco Team will continue to make a difference ecologically by offering a few hours of time to local environmental initiatives near our race courses. This could be anything from trail maintenance to park clean-up, ecological restoration, or tree planting work parties.

We just missed Lance because he signed got the idea, here's the thing, bing, bang, boom," said Kiely. with Motorola, but we had George Hincapie, Jan Ulrich, "And that's what got us started in XTERRA." 46 THE XTERRA PLANET

At the finish line of the very first XTERRA race in 1996 it was clear that XTERRA was going to be more than just a one-off event. There was passion in the eyes of the competitors and an unwavering feeling that XTERRA was destined to become a lifestyle…a movement. We believed. So much so we restructured the company to keep it growing. And look at what XTERRA has become…

- The first piece of expansion started with more races, a lot more. From one to 100+ in 17 countries in a 11-year span including a 60-stop America Tour for amateurs and a full-blown European Tour. XTERRA races can now be found on every continent in the World (including Antarctica in 2009).

- We initiated a series of XTERRA Camps across the U.S. to help prepare athletes to race and get them started towards an active lifestyle. To that end, we offer up half-distance races for newcomers at our major events, plus the chance to race as part of a relay team. We also offer free XTERRA University clinics taught by our top pros.

- We dish out a half-million dollars in prize money to attract some of the world's leading multisport athletes and garner the attention of national and international media.

- We make champions. In the U.S. off-road triathlon series alone we recognize 184 amateur regional champions and 22 amateur national champions, plus relay team and collegiate national champs, XTERRA Trail Run Series, National and World Champs, and now XTERRA Winter World Champions.

- We get kids involved wherever we go with the XTERRA Kids Zone. It's a free schedule of events with running and bike races, obstacle courses, and other fun games. The notion is to get kids outdoors and active.

- We put the lifestyle on display for millions to see with XTERRA TV. A dozen shows reaching into homes all over the world with inspiring images of fun activities in great places.

- We became consumer friendly. First with XTERRA Gear - equipment designed for rugged competition. Then, with races in more than a dozen countries and nearly every state in the U.S., we knew traveling was part of the game so we selected Travelocity to power XTERRA Travel on our website. We recently re-created XTERRAPlanet.com, which is soon to be a complete resource for any outdoor adventure.

- With the introduction of the XTERRA Foundation - we gave XTERRA heart. The XTERRA Foundation is a non-profit specifically designed to provide educational opportunities for at-risk kids.

- We've opened the doors for runners, not just multisport athletes, with the XTERRA Trail Running Series. This year there were more than 50 5k, 10k, and 21k runs reaching into 15 U.S. States. - providing more chances to participate in the healthy, active, outdoors lifestyle. We’ll host the inaugural XTERRA Trail Running World Championship - a 21k Xduro - on Dec. 7, 2008 on the island of Oahu and the U.S. National Championship in Bend, OR on Sept. 27.

- We took the XTERRA format into the snow with the creation of the XTERRA Winter World Championship.

- We created a week-long XTERRA-style adventure competition that is now the Land Rover G4 Challenge - Nevada Passage.

- We launched the XTERRA Eco Team to protect and preserve the areas we race in, and give back to the communities that host us.
