WORLD CLASS MULTISPORT IN SHELBY COUNTY

The XTERRA Southeast Championship at Oak Mountain State Park in Shelby County (Pelham) is off-road 's biggest event of the year in .

The main event combines a one-mile swim in Double Oak Lake with a grueling 20-mile mountain bike on the highly acclaimed Oak Mountain "red trail", and a twisty, turny, up-and-down 10k off-road run.

The challenge lures professional athletes from around the world and amateurs from across the nation to Pelham, and the accompanying two-day XTERRA Sports Festival provides local athletes and outdoor enthusiasts an opportunity to join in the fun.

The race is the second of four regionals leading up to the XTERRA USA Championship in , Sept. 30. For the top 15 pro men and women, a $20,000 prize purse and points towards the overall series title will be awarded. Amateur athletes compete for the Southeast Champs age group title, one of the 34 qualifying spots into the XTERRA World Championship in Maui, and for points in the XTERRA USA Championship Series.

DIRECTIONS TO OAK MOUNTAIN STATE PARK

Oak Mountain State Park is located about 25 minutes south of Birmingham. If you are traveling on I-65 take exit 246. This is the Pelham exit. Then head west on Hwy 119. Almost immediately you will take a left and head south on the State Park road. From there use the map and signs to find the trailhead you want. The park has several signs to guide you to it from I-65.

The XTERRA Kids Zone on Saturday is a daylong schedule of events providing youngsters with the chance to participate like their parents in a positive and fun environment. Camp activities include the Shimano Youth Series bike race, Kids sprint, skills riding course, cargo climbing net, balance beam, and soccer style penalty-kick shootout. Forget boring old road runs, the XTERRA Oak Mountain Scramble trail runs are crooked, bumpy, muddy and gutsy and sure to get your heart rate going! Test your physical and mental skills as you get down and dirty, ducking under branches and hopping over rocks. It's you versus Mother Nature, running on the same paths that the XTERRA Duathlon and Championship racers will tackle and it's for a good cause as proceeds benefit the Lakeshore Foundation (lakeshore.org) - a not-for-profit organization located in Birmingham that promotes independence for persons with physically disabling conditions and opportunities to pursue active healthy lifestyles. We also offer a 5k walk so everyone can get involved. Awards go to the top 3, and all participants get a shirt and refreshments.

XTERRA DUATHLON

Some guys and gals just don't swim and if you're one of them, this race is for you. The XTERRA Duathlon combines a 2-mile off-road trail run with a 10-mile mountain bike and 3-mile run. It's open to athletes of all ages and skill levels; you can even team up with two or three people and make it a team effort. The trails are identical to those being used for the main event and as such, the mountain bike course offers awesome challenges including leg-burning climbs and twisting, technical downhills.

RELAY TEAM CHALLENGE

Athletes now have more incentive than ever to forge together units of two or three people and challenge XTERRA as a team in either the sport or championship race. The top three teams in each relay division will get invited to race for the national team championship at Lake Tahoe (Sept. 29), GU is giving away generous heaps of swags to participants, and entry fees were slashed dramatically for teams this year. This is the best way to get started in XTERRA, and the crew will even help pair up individuals, so if you need a teammate to complete a relay squad, simply send an e-mail to [email protected]. Jumping into a full-distance XTERRA the first time out can be intimidating – that’s why organizers created the XTERRA Sport race. The sport competition uses the same course, but cuts each discipline in half. This race is ideal for newcomers, offer- ing a great introduction to the rigors of XTERRA.

11 THE COURSE AT OAK MOUNTAIN

Last year the new course at Oak Mountain State Park in Shelby County, located in the southernmost part of the Appalachian Chain, was praised by competitors as being one of the most fun, fast, scenic and difficult on the XTERRA schedule. It starts with a swim in the warm water of Double Oak Lake - two 750-meter laps separated by a short beach shuffle in-between. From there the long, single-loop mountain bike course starts at about 500 feet elevation, twists, turns, and rolls through the forest for seven miles then begins a gradual 700-foot climb to the summit. The descent is a fast, wild ride highlighted by the notorious "blood rock" section - a series of tricky to maneuver, uneven and jagged rocks. "I think this is the best race venue ever," said XTERRA Pro Jamie Whitmore. "It mixes East Coast mountain biking with tight turns, roots and rocks with a fast descent and rock garden area that's totally West Coast. It's just a blast!" The run is simply punishing, with four major climbs - each progressively steeper than the one before. In between the climbs are a series of weaving off-road trails that meander through forested sections that provide shade, if not relief, from the heat.

13 LAST YEAR AT THE XTERRA SOUTHEAST CHAMPIONSHIP

Sunday, June 11, 2006 – A pair of Canadians, Brent McMahon and Melanie McQuaid, took home top honors at the inaugural XTERRA Southeast Championship on a beautiful sunny day with temperatures in the mid-90’s. McMahon led the swim from start to finish, clocked a time of 16:27, and was the first racer out on the bike. Seth Wealing came out of the water about 25 seconds later, followed by Andrew Noble then Conrad Stoltz – a full minute-thir- ty behind McMahon. It turned out the top four swimmers would be the top four finishers in the same order – McMahon, Wealing, Noble, Stoltz – although there was plenty of chasing, crashing, passing, mechanicals, and all-out racing in between. In the women’s race Melanie McQuaid won it on the bike – posting the fastest split at 1:13:42, despite mechanicals. Some 300 athletes from 32 states made their way to Alabama for the inaugural event.

The 2007 season has begun and Conrad Stoltz and Melanie McQuaid have fired some big guns at the rest of the field. The second race of the series at Oak Mountain State Park in Pelham, AL is the total opposite of the first race in the deserts of California. Tight, twisty single track; much of it under cover of tall hardwoods rather than the open, sandy widetracks at Temecula. But regardless of the ballpark, a big hitter can still put the ball in the stands and it is WEALING difficult to go against a repeat of the podium in Alabama. Stoltz has been on a mission for the past 3 years but has had the most improbable luck in injuring himself. McQuaid seems to have cleared a hurdle in 2006 by winning the USA champs at Tahoe and has a quiet confidence not seen before. They are a formidable duo and will be difficult to beat this season. Last years men's USA Champ Seth Wealing has the talent and skills to challenge Stoltz but his working career is taking up more and more of his training time. "It's going to be hard to train during the week to stay with Conrad, and work 40+ hours" says Wealing. Mike Vine is a multiple time winner as is Josiah Middaugh. Vine was second in California and Middaugh 4th. Josiah is returning to the place where he crashed last year STOLTZ keeping him out of competition until September. We're sure he wants his measure of revenge against the Double Oak trail that bit him in 2006. Vine's history is in mountain bike racing and the technical aspects of this race will play into his strong suit on the bike and he is running better than ever. They will also be a plus for Brian Smith, a pure mountain biker for team Trek. Smith swims like a rock, but 'Bama is his kind of course. Andy Noble is as solid a performer as we have. At 41 he may not have the pure speed of the younger crew, but sneeze or bobble once and the Old Man is past you. His third at Temecula will not be his last podium of 2007. Here we add local favorite Craig Evans in his second year as a pro and a guy who knows these trails better than anyone. But in the end, Conrad is still the man to beat. McQuaid won at Pelham last year and is the strongest biker in the woman's field. MCQUAID Jamie Whitmore, her constant nemesis, has changed her training regimen to peak later in the year but Jamie is a racer and this is her kind of course and she will be working hard to stay in touch with Mel on the bike and run her down. Candy Angle, who like her husband Andy Noble, is Mrs. Consistency. Always in the hunt, always on the podium we are sure she is working hard to get off that 3rd place step and go higher. Jen Smith is coming on strong and is not far from stepping up as well. The women's field is pretty predictable, but so what? We know that Peyton Manning is gonna throw the ball to Marvin Harrison, Roger Clements is gonna bring heat inside to any batter and Jeff Gordon will win more NASCAR races. A pre-ride crash at the XTERRA USA Championship kept him out of nationals and worlds. THIS YEAR: Won the XTERRA South Africa Championship for the fourth straight year. Won the XTERRA West Championship by more than three minutes and had the fastest bike split.

The 2007 XTERRA National Championship Series for pros consists of six events: May 20 XTERRA West Championship Temecula, CA June 10 XTERRA Southeast Championship Pelham, AL June 17 XTERRA East Championship Richmond, VA August 18 XTERRA Mountain Championship Ogden/Snowbasin, UT Sept. 30 XTERRA USA Championship Lake Tahoe, NV

The top 15 pros at each event are awarded points based on overall pro finish. Pros can drop one of their scores from the first four events, but must count the points they get (or don’t get) in Nevada. Thus, the final point total combines athletes best three scores in the first four races, plus the USA Championship race points. He/she with most points in the end is declared Series Champ. The U.S. Series will dish out $190,000 in prize money. $20,000 in Temecula, Pelham, Richmond, and Ogden, $40,000 in Nevada, plus $70,000 will be distributed to the top overall points scorers in the Series. TOBIN WEULE 29 XTERRA AMERICA TOUR SERIES The XTERRA America Tour is designed to provide age group athletes with a bona-fide championship to compete for within their geographic region. At the end of the regular season the top performers in each of eight regions are invited to compete against other athletes their same age - but from different regions - at the national championship in Nevada on September 30. This year there are 50 races in 32 states across the country, as well as the U.S. Territories of Guam and Saipan. It marks the 11th straight year of expansion for the sport of XTERRA.

Here's how the Series works: 1) There are eight regions, determined by a competitor's primary residence at the time of their first race:

NORTH EAST (NE) - Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York. MID ATLANTIC (MA) - Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, Maryland, , West Virginia, Washington D.C. SOUTH EAST (SE) - Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands NORTH CENTRAL (NC) - Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Kentucky. SOUTH CENTRAL (SC) - Texas, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Kansas, Missouri, Louisiana, Mississippi, . MOUNTAIN (MT) - Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Wyoming. NORTH WEST (NW) - Washington, Oregon, Idaho, Alaska. SOUTH WEST (SW) - California, Nevada, Arizona, Hawaii, Guam, Northern Marianas Islands, Pacific Territories.

2) Age Group: "XTERRA Age" is based on a competitor's age on December 31, 2007. Athletes compete in the following age categories: 15-19, 20-24, 25-29, 30-34, 35-39, 40-44, 45-49, 50-54, 55-59, 60+ (w), 60-64 (m), 65+ (m), and new for 2006 is the Challenged Athletes Division (which is not broken down by age group, simply gender).

3) Series competitors race for points at their choice of 50 events - including XTERRA Points Series (XPS) races & XTERRA Championship Series (XCS) races. Competitors are required to race and count points in at least one event in his/her region. Competitors can enter as many events as they'd like, however, they count just their best three finishes.

4) Points are awarded to the top 15 finishers in each age group at each race. If you race at more than one XTERRA Championship event, only the best finish counts at full points. Any other finishes earn points at the same rate as the XTERRA Points Series races. There are two points systems:

5) The highest points scorers in each region are invited to compete for a national title at the XTERRA USA Championship in Nevada (qualifying spots based on chart below). The competitor with the most points in their age group in each XTERRA Region earns the title of XTERRA Regional Champion, and wins a custom racing jersey.

Reigning XTERRA World Champion Nicolas Lebrun won his first XTERRA European Tour title by winning races in Italy, Czech, and Denmark, and finishing 2nd in France and third in Germany. On the women’s side Renata Bucher dominated the Tour with victories in France, Italy, Czech, Spain, and the UK. - We make champions. In the U.S. series alone we recognize 184 amateur regional champions and 22 amateur national champions, plus relay team national champions.

- We get kids involved wherever we go with the XTERRA Kids Zone. It's a free schedule of events with running and bike races, obstacle courses, and other fun games. The notion is to get kids outdoors and active.

- We've opened the doors for runners, not just multisport athletes, with the XTERRA Trail Run Series. This year there are more than 30 5k and 10k fun runs reaching into 18 major metropolitan cities in America - providing more chances to participate in the healthy, active, outdoors lifestyle.

- We took the XTERRA format into the snow with the creation of the XTERRA Winter World Championship to be held at Snowbasin Resort and Ogden, Utah on March 8-9, 2008.

- We launced the XTERRA Green Team to protect and preserve the areas we race in, and give back to the communities that host us.

TEAM Unlimited is a Hawaii-based television events and marketing company, founded in 1988. It owns and produces XTERRA, and in 2007 more than 100 events will be held in 16 countries. It all started with 123 competitors one afternoon in Maui, and has since evolved into the most prestigious off-road multisport race in the world. There are now more than 20,000 competitors, ages 13-70, from all 50 states and more than 40 countries.

XTERRA THROUGH TIME 1996: Jimmy Riccitello and Michellie Jones win inaugural event in Wailea, Maui. 1997: XTERRA adds two events in California, and one in Louisiana in addition to World Championship. 1998: The XTERRA tour goes to Michigan, Colorado, Oregon, and back to Louisiana. 1999: 11 races spanning from California to New Jersey. First year of Pro Points Series. 2000: XTERRA goes global with its first international races in England, Japan, and Canada. 2001: The first year of the Nissan Xterra USA Championship Series, Australia and the Netherlands. 2002: The inaugural XTERRA Saipan Championship, and races in Germany and the Czech Republic. The Nissan Xterra USA Championship Series expands to 31 races. 2003: The seventh consecutive year of expansion provides more than 50 events to compete in. 2004: Forty-five events in the U.S., plus 33 international races and a full-fledged XTERRA European Tour 2007: Now more than 100 races worldwide, and new global stops in Argentina and Costa Rica.
