Methods: It was installed three experimental structures with artificial substrate (glass slides) in December 2009 in two sampling sites: ED – near the domestic sewage’s release; TR – in the area of intensive fish farming (net cages). Samplings were conducted in each experimental structure, after 21, 26 and 31 days for colonization. We evaluated: transparency, electric conductivity, pH, turbidity, total suspended solids, alkalinity, dissolved oxygen, water temperature, total nitrogen, nitrate, nitrite, ammonia nitrogen, total phosphorus, orthophosphate and silicate. The phycoperiphyton was analyzed regarding biomass: biovolume (total and per class); pigments (chlorophyll-a and b and carotenoids) and phaeophytin; dry weight and ash- free dry weight. Results: TR featured higher values of transparency, water temperature and silicate. -

Measurements of Plankton Distribution in the Ocean Using Submersible Holography Edwin Malkiel, Omar Alquaddoomi and Joseph Katz Department of Mechanical Engineering, The Johns Hopkins University Baltimore, MD 21218 USA Abstract A submersible holography system for in situ recordings of the spatial distribution of plankton has been developed and deployed. The system utilizes a ruby laser with an in-line recording configuration and has a sample volume of 732 ml. The reconstructed images have a resolution ranging from 10 - 20 µm for spherical particles and 3 µm for linear particles that lie within 100 mm from the film. Reconstructed volumes from holograms recorded during two recent deployments in the Strait of Georgia are scanned to obtain focused images of the particles, their position, size, orientation. The particles are also classified to several groups based on their morphological characteristics. One of the sets includes holograms recorded during a 15 minute vertical transect of the top 30 m of the water column. Along with the holograms, the data includes records of depth, temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen and optical transmissivity. The results show substantial variations in population makeup between layers spaced a short distance apart, particle concentration maxima at and near a pycnocline and evidence of zooplankton migration. A predominant horizontal diatom orientation is indicated in the region of peak diatom concentration. Individual holograms show clustering within different classes of plankton. There is also concern over the increasing frequency of harmful algal blooms in coastal waters, not only because of their effect on the fisheries, but also because their effect on people. -

Aceito em 27/10/2006 RESUMO – (Coscinodiscophyceae, Fragilariophyceae e Bacillariophyceae (Achnanthales) dos rios Ivaí, São João e dos Patos, bacia hidrográfica do rio Ivaí, município de Prudentópolis, PR, Brasil). Realizou-se o levantamento florístico das Coscinodiscophyceae, Fragilariophyceae e Bacillariophyceae (Achnanthales) dos rios Ivaí, São João e dos Patos, pertencentes à bacia hidrográfica do rio Ivaí, município de Prudentópolis, Paraná. Quarenta e uma amostras foram coletadas em março, junho e julho/2002 e janeiro/2003, e analisadas. As coletas fitoplanctônicas foram feitas através de arrasto superficial com rede de plâncton (25 µm) e as perifíticas através da coleta de porções submersas de macrófitas aquáticas, rochas, cascalho, sedimento ou substrato arenoso. Foram identificados, nove táxons pertencentes à classe Coscinodiscophyceae, oito à classe Fragilariophyceae e quinze à ordem Achnanthales (Bacillariophyceae). A mesocosm study was carried out in December 2005 to January 2006 in Mangalore, India. Mesocosms were inoculated with various com- binations of benthic and/or planktonic cells, sampled from the coastal SE Arabian Sea, and the devel- opment of the planktonic community was followed. Diatoms dominated the phytoplankton commu- nity in all mesocosms, irrespective of inoculum. The most significant differences among inoculum types were altered species composition, and the timings of the maximum cell abundances, which lagged behind in the sediment mesocosms. Populations of Thalassiosira were initiated by both plank- ton and benthic propagules. Taxa known from temperate coastal areas to seed bloom by benthic propagules, such as Chaetoceros and Skeletonema, were predominantly seeded by planktonic cells in this experiment; this implies differential seeding strategy within the same species at different latitudes. The species assemblage encountered in the plankton and sediment was similar, which indicates that the benthic resting stages seed an autochthonous phytoplankton flora in the area. -

Abstract: Antibiotics are frequently applied to treat bacterial infections in humans and animals. However, most consumed antibiotics are excreted into wastewater as metabolites or in their original form. Therefore, removal of antibiotics from aquatic environments is of high research interest. In this study, we investigated the removal of sulfamethoxazole (SMX) and ofloxacin (OFX) with Chaetoceros muelleri, a marine diatom. The optimization process was conducted using response surface methodology (RSM) with two independent parameters, i.e., the initial concentration of antibiotics and contact time. The optimum removal of SMX and OFX were 39.8% (0.19 mg L−1) and 42.5% (0.21 mg L−1) at the initial concentration (0.5 mg L−1) and contact time (6.3 days). Apart from that, the toxicity effect of antibiotics on the diatom was monitored in different SMX and OFX concentrations (0 to 50 mg L−1).
