Last summer, while many of us lay under the sun working on our tan, a research group from the University of Hawai‘i worked on a project at the Antarctica Peninsula. The research project, FOODBANCS II, was fund- ed by the National Science Foundation. It was an inter- national collaborative effort involving universities in the United States (UH and North Carolina State University), the United Kingdom and Brazil. FOODBANCS II is a fol- low-up to a project conducted from 1999 to 2001; its main goal is to explore how the Antarctic ecosystem is changing over time in the face of global warming and how that is impacting ben- thic organisms. The crew, which included two UH environmental science undergraduates, spent close to four weeks in Antarctica. The preparations for the trip were certainly unique. Prior to leav- ing, each person had to undergo extensive medical surveys to see if they would be able to with- stand the area’s extreme weather conditions. Ostensibly, Black Lips have created quite a mercurial image for themselves. With raucous stage antics and a piss-everywhere attitude, they are intent on pushing the bad-boy image. Their latest album, “Good Bad Not Evil,” is a palimpsest of sorts, opposing dissonant garage riffs with sonic rhythm. “Bad Kids,” arguably the catchiest song on the album, is a self-deprecating sing-along for America’s misled youth. Lyrically speaking, PHOTO COURTESY MYSPACE.COM/SANTOGOLD Black Lips remain truant, disguising their charm with delin- quent potty talk. With one of the most critically acclaimed albums of the year, maybe it’s a good thing these Georgia boys GET SICK dropped out of school. THIS WINTER
