2 Light Opera Works A FEW WORDS FROM THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

Happy Holidays, and welcome as we ring in the New Year with one of the great masterworks of another time, Strauss’s immortal DIE FLEDERMAUS. As we count down to 2017, we look forward to the changes that time will bring. There will be new challenges, new hopes--and for Light Opera Works, a new name: Music Theater Works!

I can’t think of a better way to celebrate this change than by putting one of the world’s great operettas on our stage, as a fitting and festive end to the Light Opera Works era. As we move forward, be assured that our new name was chosen to embrace even more of the musical theater repertoire we all love, and to reflect the evolution that has has already taken place in the company since its founding in 1981.

Tradition has always been important at Light Opera Works, and will continue to be at Music Theater Works. We have always been committed to giving you a great experience, presenting great performances of great works. Our name is changing, but that commitment will not.

I’ve been with the company over 10 years now, I’ve had the pleasure to get to know many of you. I continue to be humbled and grateful by your support. My thanks to all of you. Happy New Year!

ACT I The curtain rises on the Eisenstein living room. We hear the serenading voice of Alfred, a former lover of Eisenstein’s wife, Rosalinda. Into the room comes Adele, Rosalinda’s maid, who is scheming to get the evening off so she can go to a masked ball with her sister Ida. She invents a sick aunt, but Rosalinda refuses the request. Her husband must go to jail that night for five days for assault, and Rosalinda does not wish to be alone. The amorous Alfred appears. Rosalinda reminds him that she is married, and induces him to leave only after promising to let him return later. Eisenstein enters with Dr. Blind, his lawyer, who has failed to get his client released from his sentence, actually managing to get it increased to eight days.

Dr. Falke arrives to cheer up the condemned man. With Rosalinda gone, he persuades Eisenstein to attend a party with him that night—jail can wait until the morning. Eisenstein prepares to take his leave, and a tearful farewell ensues. Eisenstein leaves, dancing off to prison—or so his wife thinks. Rosalinda decides to give Adele permission to visit her “sick aunt.” With Adele gone, Alfred returns and makes himself at home. He and Rosalinda are surprised by the arrival of Frank, the jail warden, who has come to escort Eisenstein to jail. Rosalinda convinces the warden that the is her husband, and placates Alfred with a kiss. Reluctantly, he bids her farewell as Frank drags him off.

ACT II The glittering ball at Prince Orlofsky’s is in full swing. Adele arrives and encounters her sister Ida, who denies sending Adele an invitation. Knowing Orlofsky’s taste for intrigue, Falke explains “The Revenge of the Bat,” a plan for tricking Eisenstein in payback for a previous practical joke. Eisenstein is introduced as Marquis Renard, and Orlofsky explains the rules of his house. Adele, posing as an actress, encounters Eisenstein, and pretends not to recognize him. He accuses her of being his chambermaid, but Adele makes a fool of him in her famous “Laughing Song.”

Eisenstein is then introduced to Chevalier Chagrin—Frank in disguise. Rosalinda, who has received word from Falke that her husband is not in jail, arrives as a Hungarian countess. Eisenstein, unaware of her true identity, tries to seduce her. Asked to prove herself Hungarian, she sings a fiery Czardas, but does not unmask. The evening winds on with champagne and dancing. As the clock strikes six in the morning, Eisenstein and Frank separately remember their appointments at the jail and leave the ball while the remaining guests continue the festivities.

ACT III The plot unwinds in the prison. While Frank has been away at the ball, his turnkey, Frosch, has been getting drunk, though he has been annoyed all night by the singing of the new prisoner—Alfred, of course. As Frosch exits, Frank staggers in, still under the influence of the gala. Adele and Ida arrive to ask a favor of him. Adele reveals that she is not really an actress, but would like to be. Frosch escorts the women to a cell as the “Marquis” arrives and reveals his true identity to Frank. Frank declares this to be impossible, as he personally arrested Eisenstein in his living room last night. Furious, Eisenstein disguises himself as Dr. Blind in order to discover the truth; in this disguise he interviews Alfred and Rosalinda. In the ensuing fracas, becomes clear that Falke—”The Bat”—has had his revenge at last.
