BRINGING LEADERSHIP & BUSINESS SKILLS TO DISADVANTAGED YOUTH Innovative Social Worker Helps Foster Kids Become Leaders, Change-Makers, & Entrepreneurs of Tomorrow Becoming an effective leader and positive change-maker does not happen by chance. It requires nurturing, education, practice, and a strong support system. For disadvantaged youth, opportunities to acquire these skills are not readily available. It's even more difficult if you are one of the 400,000 American kids in foster care. Entrenched amidst instability, foster youth face major obstacles to success including a lack of financial and emotional support. The statistics are shocking. Less than 10% of foster kids attend college, and of that number, less than 26% will graduate. According to Youth Activist and Social Worker Judith Halbreich, part of the problem is that foster youth age out of the system right when they need to be nurtured and have a strong social support system. “Many of these kids are ambitious. They have the potential to become leaders, change-makers, entrepreneurs, and more...but the rug is pulled out from under them when they turn 18 and they have no support system...” ...says Halbreich, who saw this unfortunate scenario frequently with foster kids on her caseload. Determined to change these statistics, she launched "Home of Champions" (HOC) an innovative non-profit that gives foster youth in college a home base, facilitating their success in academia and beyond. In addition to a variety of other offerings, HOC holds leadership summits which teach participants leadership, business, and sustainable life skills, giving them the confidence to be innovators and to achieve their goals. It also has available valuable resources like mentorship and a consortium of businesses to make finding a job after graduation easier. The program seeks to embolden the leaders of tomorrow through lessons on hard work and through cultivation of the spirit. “We are living in a time of great uncertainty, from the pandemic and its economic fallout to social and political unrest. Now more than ever, we need to steer disconnected youth away from the streets and help them become responsible leaders, change-makers, and entrepreneurs of tomorrow...” ...says Halbreich. Although these turbulent times affect us all, it’s even more problematic for disadvantaged or disconnected youth. Without parental guidance and support, or opportunities for positive involvement with their peers, they often turn to a gang to meet these needs. Judith Halbreich is sharing how we can shift the stats for disadvantaged youth & help them become the leaders, entrepreneurs, & change-makers of tomorrow. She has actionable advice for the general public, & free resources for caregivers, foster kids, & other at-risk youth populations. It is a challenging and supportive program where youth will have access to opportunities, resources, and mentoring; gain the knowledge to live an active, consistent and sustained lifestyle; and develop the attitude necessary to become the responsible leaders, change-makers, and entrepreneurs of tomorrow. With a legacy of champions built into the organization, HOC is located in New Paltz, NY at the former home of boxing legend Floyd Patterson and still holds the original boxing ring where he and fellow world heavyweight champions Muhammad Ali and Ingemar Johansson trained. HOC will continue the legacy of this historical symbolic entity by working to emphasize the positive attributes of disconnected youth, challenging them to match Patterson, Ali, and Johansson’s tenacious spirit and willpower, and empowering them to become the best versions of themselves.
