IMPORTANT INFORMATION BY SOLIDAR ON 10th SILVER ROSE AWARDS Wednesday 3 February 2010 European Parliament, Members Dining Room, Altierro Spinelli Building, Ground Floor 18.45-20.00 (followed by a reception) The 10th SOLIDAR Silver Rose Awards are being awarded to Colombian Trade Unions CUT- CTC-CGT, the European Roma Rights Centre, and former Prime Ministers Gyula Horn and Pierre Mauroy. These individuals and organisations are being awarded for their outstanding contributions to social justice and solidarity in Europe and the world. The awards ceremony will take place on Wednesday 3 February in the European Parliament in Brussels. The SOLIDAR Silver Rose Awards is this year celebrating its 10th Anniversary. Confirmed speakers at the event include Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, President of the Party of European Socialists and former President of Denmark and Martin Schulz MEP and President of the Group of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament. Below is more information about the four winners in the categories of International Solidarity, European Social Justice and Lifetime Achievement: International Solidarity: Colombia Trade Union Federations that are members of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC): Central Unitaria de Trabajadores (CUT), Confederacion de Trabajadores de Colombia (CTC) and Confederacion General del Trabajo (CGT). Why? Colombia is the most dangerous country in the world to be active in trade unions. Despite the severe situation, the Colombian trade unions CUT, CTC and CGT, are continuing their important work to organise Colombian workers: workers who are working under bad conditions, in dangerous working environments, with low salaries, and bad or no insurances. European Social Justice: European Roma Rights Centre (ERRC) Why? An international public interest law organisation engaging in a range of activities aimed at combating anti-Romani racism and human rights abuse of Roma. It has increased public attention, condemned abuse, contributed to public interest law, developed EU policy documents, influenced human rights aspects of enlargement, become leading advocate in implementing anti- discrimination law. Two Awards for Lifetime Achievement: Gyula Horn, Former Prime Minster of Hungary Why? He was an active initiator and protagonist of the opening of the Hungarian foreign policy from the 1970s to late 1990s. A highlight in his career was when he helped to cut down the Iron Curtain along with his Austrian counterpart Alois Mock. Pierre Mauroy, Former Prime Minster of France Why? Mr Mauroy served as Prime Minister under François Mitterrand from 1981 to 1984 and also served as Mayor of Lille from 1973 to 2001. His cabinet introduced social reforms including reduction of the working time to 39 hours, retirement at 60 years and a rise in allowances.
