I focus my study on what may be the most prominent authors of the two contexts: José Martí (1853-1895) and José Rizal (1861-1896). Although scholars such as Benedict Anderson and Leopoldo Zea have already noted the obvious relations between Martí and Rizal, their anti-imperial texts have not been systematically compared. Caught between the two empires (Spain and the United States), their projects were equally overwhelming: while studying the history of the failed independence movement in their respective colonies, they attempted to transform the dilemmas of imperial culture into the building blocks for national liberation. Based on this historico-political premise, my study attempts to explore how Martí and Rizal employ different literary forms to articulate their discourse of protest and to what extent their political writings create the conditions of possibility for a transnational, inter-colonial form of resistance against imperial domination. One of the central contentions of this dissertation is that the two writers’ anti-imperial texts construct the conceptual framework for the idea of what I call “global resistance.” By this, I mean to indicate the ways in which Cubans and Filipinos shared certain anti-colonial ideas and struggles against common opponents in the nineteenth century. Through literary analysis and historical study, I intend to examine both the possibilities and the limits of global resistance. To him I dedicate this dissertation. viii INTRODUCTION The 1898 Spanish-American War represented one of the most drastic changes in modern world history: an old empire was replaced by a new one, indicating not only the end of a historical phase led by Europe, but also the coming of an entirely new, modern era. A central aspect of this historical shift was a surprising link between two geographically remote countries. As a result of the war, Cuba and the Philippines almost simultaneously achieved their “independence” from Spain, though they were at once converted into targets of an ascendant U.S. expansionism. Caught between the two empires, Cubans and Filipinos shared similar experiences of colonial injustice as well as struggles for national independence. Equally notable is the presence of a transoceanic circuit of ideas that would juxtapose both colonies under the same sphere of anti- imperial resistance. These ideas are articulated by various writers and political actors from the Caribbean and Southeast Asia, symbolizing a particular cultural politics of trans-Pacific networks. This dissertation aims to compare and contrast an aspect of the fin-de-siècle literature and history of anti-imperialism in Cuba and the Philippines. It challenges the notion of a “great divide” between Republic and Revolution by tracing contentious interactions between technocrats, politicians, and financial elites on one hand, and mobilized, mostly-Afro-descended tenants and shantytown residents on the other hand. The dynamics of housing inequality in Havana not only reflected existing socio- racial hierarchies but also produced and reconfigured them in ways that have not been systematically researched.

Rizal. The Consulate General was represented by Consul General Adelio Angelito S. Cruz while the City of Carson, led by Councilmember Elito Santarina who offered their respective wreaths at the foot of the Rizal Monument. Other Fil-Am organizations, particularly Kalayaan, Inc., JPRMM, Knights of Rizal and Fleet Reserve Veterans Association, Branch 302, also offered their own wreaths. In December 2013, the City of Carson approved and adopted Resolution No. 13-121, declaring December 30 of every year for the City of Carson, California – “A day of honoring and remembering RIZAL for the ideals of liberty, equality and justice, and for the noble principles he advocated which may serve to inspire people to become good citizens”. Leaders of various Filipino-American Associations in Southern California participated in this year’s event. City of Carson Officials including City Treasurer Monica Cooper, Assistant City Manager Cecil Rhambo and former City Mayor Jim Dear also graced the occasion. In his remarks, Consul General Cruz remarked “This year’s Theme, ‘Rizal: Bayaning Global, Aydol ni Juan’, is as timely and as meaningful not only to our Kababayans back home but to each of the 10 million Filipinos living and working abroad”.

Guilmartin, Jr., Advisor Professor Alan Beyerchen Professor Ousman Kobo Copyright by Matthew Martin Hurley 2009 i Abstract From 1963 to 1974, Portugal and the African Party for the Independence of Guinea and Cape Verde (Partido Africano da Independência da Guiné e Cabo Verde, or PAIGC) waged an increasingly intense war for the independence of ―Portuguese‖ Guinea, then a colony but today the Republic of Guinea-Bissau. For most of this conflict Portugal enjoyed virtually unchallenged air supremacy and increasingly based its strategy on this advantage. The Portuguese Air Force (Força Aérea Portuguesa, abbreviated FAP) consequently played a central role in the war for Guinea, at times threatening the PAIGC with military defeat. Portugal‘s reliance on air power compelled the insurgents to search for an effective counter-measure, and by 1973 they succeeded with their acquisition and employment of the Strela-2 shoulder-fired surface-to-air missile, altering the course of the war and the future of Portugal itself in the process. To date, however, no detailed study of this seminal episode in air power history has been conducted. In an international climate plagued by insurgency, terrorism, and the proliferation of sophisticated weapons, the hard lessons learned by Portugal offer enduring insight to historians and current air power practitioners alike.

    A Medley of Cultures: Louisiana History at the Cabildo Chapter 1 Introduction This book is the result of research conducted for an exhibition on Louisiana history prepared by the Louisiana State Museum and presented within the walls of the historic Spanish Cabildo, constructed in the 1790s. All the words written for the exhibition script would not fit on those walls, however, so these pages augment that text. The exhibition presents a chronological and thematic view of Louisiana history from early contact between American Indians and Europeans through the era of Reconstruction. One of the main themes is the long history of ethnic and racial diversity that shaped Louisiana. Thus, the exhibition—and this book—are heavily social and economic, rather than political, in their subject matter. They incorporate the findings of the "new" social history to examine the everyday lives of "common folk" rather than concentrate solely upon the historical markers of "great white men." In this work I chose a topical, rather than a chronological, approach to Louisiana's history. Each chapter focuses on a particular subject such as recreation and leisure, disease and death, ethnicity and race, or education. In addition, individual chapters look at three major events in Louisiana history: the Battle of New Orleans, the Civil War, and Reconstruction. Organization by topic allows the reader to peruse the entire work or look in depth only at subjects of special interest. For readers interested in learning even more about a particular topic, a list of additional readings follows each chapter. Before we journey into the social and economic past of Louisiana, let us look briefly at the state's political history.
