ARUNACHAL PRADESH-AN OVERVIEW 1.1 Land and climate Arunachal Pradesh is a infrastructure deficient frontier state. Lying in the north-eastern tip of the Indian subcontinent it is bounded by long international borders of about 1628 Km with Bhutan to the west, China to the north, Myanmar to the east. It also shares interstate boundary with Assam and Nagaland in the south. With an area of 83,743 sq.km, it is the largest geographical entity in the whole of North-Eastern region. The State’s topography is predominantly hilly and it is traversed by many major rivers and their tributaries, all discharging into the Brahmaputra. About 82% of the geographical area of the state is under the cover of forests which support a diverse spectrum of flora and fauna. The state receives high precipitation with annual rainfall exceeding 2500 mm and substantial snow melt in the upper reaches. 1.2 People It is a Schedule Tribe majority state with ethnically diverse 25 major tribes. With total population of 1.10 million (as per the 2001 census) the density of population stands as 13.11 persons per sq.km, the thinnest in the country. Over 75% of the people live in villages which are widely scattered with many located in remote interiors close to the international borders.

    Introduction Lower Subansiri district is one of the 17 administrative districts of the state of Arunachal Pradesh in north eastern India. History The district was formed when Subansiri district was bifurcated into Upper and Lower Subansiri districts in 1987. Lower Subansiri district has a long ancient history related with the Chutiya Kingdom. It was probably under Chutiya chieftain rule from a long time, and came under Birpal's rule in the 12th century. In 1999 Papum Pare district was split to form new district and this was repeated on 1 April 2001, with the creation of Kurung Kumey district. In October 2017 the state government approved the creation of Kamle district, involving the carving out of Raga, Dolungmukh and Kumpurijio circles from Lower Subansiri district. Geography The district headquarters are located at Ziro. The district occupies an area of 3,460 km² It is bounded on the north by the Upper Subansiri district of Arunachal, on the south by Papum Pare District of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, on the east by West Siang and some part of Upper Subansiri, and on the west by East Kameng district of Arunachal Pradesh. Divisions There are 6 administrative circles in this district, namely, Ziro (Sadar), Yachuli, Pistana, Raga, Kamporijo and Dollungmukh. The district also divided into 3 blocks: Ziro-I, Ziro-II and Tamen-Raga. There are 2 Arunachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly constituencies located in this district: Yachuli and Ziro-Hapoli. Both of these are part of Arunachal West Lok Sabha constituency. Demographics According to the 2011 census Lower Subansiri district has a population of 82,839, roughly equal to the nation of Andorra.[6] This gives it a ranking of 623rd in India (out of a total of 640).The district has a population density of 24 inhabitants per square kilometre (62/sq mi) .

GRIFFITHIANUM SIKKIM RHODODENDRON CONSERVATION • Kanchendzonga Biosphere Reserve 2619.92 km2 (1829 to 8550 m amsl), most important for flora and fauna, ecological, geomorphologic importance and wild life potentiality in the area • Barsey Rhododendron Sanctuary 104.00km2 Singalila Range. Climate is wet and cold. • Fambonglho Wildlife Sanctuary 51.76 25 km from Gangtok 1280 to 2652 m amsl. Black Bear, Red Panda, Civet cat and many varieties of birds and butterflies. • Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary 43.00km2 North Sikkim Lachung Valley, known for its alpine meadow and hot spring. R. niveum the state tree of Sikkim endemic here. • Maenam Wildlife Sanctuary 35.34km2 Located in South Sikkim exceedingly rich in R. griffithianum and R. dalhousiae with some other species • Kyongnpsla Alpine Sanctuary 31.00km2 Located on the way of Nathula. The state tree of Sikkim (R. niveum) has been introduced here • Singalila National Park 78.60km2 With other rhododendrons an undergrowth of R. arboretum, R. falconeri, R. hodgosonii and R. grande. • Neora National Park 88.00 Well known for the rhododendron, most of the rhododendrons are disappearing. The past glory can be visualized through remnants • Sinchel Wildlife Sanctuary 39.45 Rare and endangered ground orchids and rhododendrons.

Omeo Kumar Das Institute of Social Change and Development, Guwahati had been assigned to carry out the Survey for four states of the Northeast, namely Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Meghalaya and Manipur.
