2016 Nationals Booklet FINAL Quantum Sails J24 National Championships 2017 Cronulla Sailing Club Sponsored by NOTES Quantum Sails J24 National Championships 2017 Cronulla Sailing Club Organising Authority: Cronulla Sailing Club 50 Waratah Street, Cronulla, NSW 2230 Telephone (02) 9523 6114 Facsimile (02) 9544 1481 E-mail: [email protected] On Behalf of J24 Class Association NSW Email: [email protected] Cronulla Sailing Club Cronulla Sailing Club was formed in 1963 from the amalgamation of Cronulla VS Sailing Club and the Port Hacking VJ Amateur Sailing Club. Since those days, the 'cubby house' has grown to what it is today – a thriving sailing club catering for offshore, inshore and dinghy fleets, as well as Sailability. Twilight sailing also happens over the daylight savings period. CSC prides itself on being a totally volunteer run club (well, we do pay our bar staff....). All our facilities/buildings have been achieved through voluntary labour and expertise. One of the few west facing sailing clubs in Sydney, the aspect and views are unmatchable. Cronulla Sailing Club features: Strong dinghy classes – Bics, Lasers, NS14s, MGs, 49ers (Yeah, we've got a few national and state champs in there!!!!!) Inshore – J24s, Etchells, Hoods, Endeavours, Rls. Offshore – many Sydney to Hobart competitors, along with Sydney to Gold Coast, Port Stephens Regatta, Hamilton Island. Famous faces – our 2016 paralympian gold medallist, Jonathon Harris (Jon will be volunteering at the J24 Nationals). 2013 Melbourne to Osaka 2 handed winner, Wasabi (Bruce McKay). Nev Wittey of Etchell and Olympic fame. Also International Judge, and heading up the protest committee for J24 nationals. Ian Short (multiple J24 titles). 2016 (and other) National Jubilee champ, Stephen Wright (sailing Renaissance in the J24 nationals). 1969/70 and 1970/71 World Moth Champion and Australian Yachtsman of the year, numerous 16 (and 18) foot skiff Australian title holder, Dave McKay (sailing Stockcar in the J24 nationals). CSC's enviable financial position is achieved through our 'Famous Fridays', a stand out social event every Friday over the daylight savings period. This allows us to promote and support all levels of sailing. We at CSC are very proud to be hosting the J24 National Titles and hope that all competitors enjoy their time here. Welcome! Quantum Sails J24 National Championships 2017 Dave McLachlan - PRO Dave McLachlan, Cronulla Sailing Club’s unassuming Principle Race Officer has been responsible for running the club’s racing for over 25 years and is well respected by his peers and the competitors sailing in his care. His race management includes many States and Nationals dinghy and keelboat One Design classes - so you can expect to have a well run regatta on the water. Jon Harris - Gold Medal Olympian Jon Harris is a Cronulla Sailing Club member and a member of the Australian Paralympic Team representing us in the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Paralympic Games in the Mixed Three Person Sonar class and winning the gold medal. Jon will be our special guest of honour at the prize giving. AusSea Sailing School has owned In the Mood for four years and competes in NSW and National Regattas with a different crew each time. The goal is to give as many students the opportunity to experience class racing in J24 and Melges 24. The crew for the 2017 Nationals is Marc van Dinther (helm), Scott Hewison (trim), Sonja Hewison (pit), Alexander Smeaton (mast) and Joeanne Katsikaros (bow). McKAY MARINE - AUS1317 CSC Mouse is back with a mishmash of Great Lakes and Cronulla crew. Usually Laser sailors, they have sailed competitively in Cherubs and 16 foot skiffs. Julie Castle would like to be known for her skills rather than her parentage. (Says she’s going to beat him this time.) Nationals Crew: Commodore of GLSC, Bill Stokes (flying dutchman, J24s, Lasers) and local availability. KICKING - AUS1324 SYC Formerly known as KICKING BOTTOM and regarded as the fastest green Jarkan J24 in Australia, KICKING has been rebranded and is now white as a result of being caught starting early too many times. Sailing from Sandringham Yacht club, KICKING has travelled to Adelaide, Sydney Harbour and now Cronulla participating in every State and National Championships in the past few years always enjoying each regatta and continues to keep the Bashford built boats honest. Current holder of the THOMO cup, a fiercely fought and treasured trophy, KICKING is ready to tackle the Cronulla swell and tides. Owner and skipper is Ron Thomson originally from Manly yacht club in Sydney but now based in Melbourne and current National J24 President – please bow. The carefully selected crew are: Daniel Abbas An extraordinary trimmer Caroline Short A seasoned Tasmanian sailor Janet Dean Current past Commodore of RMYS Maria Vasardani A welcome addition to the crew for the Nationals SEAS THE JAY - AUS1635 RMYC & CSC Seas The Jay is owned by Jared Macquart and Alex Naylor, it is raced out of both the RMYC and CSC, in Wednesday twilights, Saturday Inshore, and the Sunday Bate Bay series. Seas The Jay crew for the Nationals consists of a fairly young crew from Cronulla Sailing Club : Jared Macquart - Skipper / Pit Jacob Broom - Steerer / Tactician / Pit Cooper Ellis - Trimmer John Spencer - Bowman / Mastman The boat and crew are proudly sponsored by Newton Real Estate and Grandview Interiors. RENAISSANCE - AUS1636 CSC Steve Wright and Karyn Grover bought the former “Excite Your Senses” from Michael Lewenhagen at Sandringham 18 months ago. Sailing at Cronulla again after many years absence has been a “renaissance” for Karyn and Steve who sailed together on a NS14 a long time ago, also for regular crew Jonathan Wright and his wife Frances who sailed a J at Sandy some years ago. Steve and Karyn are also current Australian and Victorian Jubilee Champions and the whole crew has had success at various levels of dinghy, yacht and offshore racing. It’s great to be back on the water with some “old friends” from Cronulla. Crew for the Nationals : Steve Wright (skipper); Karyn Grover (trim); Scott Birdsall (pit) (has sailed Sydney Hobart Race and all the east coast offshore races plus won dinghy titles); Clem Birdsall (mast) (some Club sailing but keen as mustard & learning fast !); Ian Goodbury (bow) (very experienced dinghy and offshore sailor, won V.S. and Magic 25 series also with Scott) proudly sponsored by Newton Real Estate and Grandview Interiors. JARGON - AUS1642 CSC Jargon (AUS1642) was purchased accidentally by Tony Landers during a moment of weakness one mid-summer Friday afternoon in 2011 whilst he was enjoying a beer and a sunset on the deck of Cronulla Sailing Club. She has been campaigned fiercely every Friday night since, by an elite band of ex Kirrawee High students and 1980's VJ, Cherub and Skiff wannabe's. She is crewed (ir)regularly by Greg Cato, Brent Daly, Brad Duggan, Richard Searle, Jeremy Searle and anyone else that arrives at the wharf around 5:45 pm armed with a six pack. After an initial burst of Saturday series, she has settled in to the occasional club race and guest appearance at Short Course and other regattas. Nationals Crew: Tony Landers, Brian McCarthy (all the way from Brisbane) and others to be announced closer to the event NO EYE DEER (N.E.D) - AUS4424 CYCSA N.E.D is one of Jim Townsend's J24s and sailed by son Andrew out of the Cruising Yacht Club of South Australia (CYCSA). N.E.D was well known when sailed by top yachtie Trevor Conyers. N.E.D's name is on most winnable silverware at the CYCSA. N.E.D has had some TLC and thanks to the kind donation/loan of some good racing sales to the association and the selfless facilitation of Cookie Monsters Rob Hogan will have competitive sails for the Cronulla series. This Year NED has been racing in Div 2 at the CYCSA, winning the winter series (PHS) as the crew settled in. Nationals Crew is : Andrew Townsend (helm), Daniel Miller (trimmer), Andrew Dickson (tactician/pit), Brooke Kilowsky (mast) Juliet Crompton (bow). The crew of N.E.D are hoping to continue improving and aspire to one day sail in World Championships to continue their J24 journey. PINOT - AUS4430 CSC Pinot sails out of Cronulla Sailing club’ The boat was owned by John Terry from the Middle Harbour Yacht club. I purchased Pinot about three years ago and have sailed in two state titles and three Cronulla short courses regattas. I will be sailing a mixed crew from Botany Bay Yacht Club, Sandringham Yacht Club and Cronulla.

    DEVIOT SAILING CLUB GEORGETOWN YACHT CLUB GEORGETOWN TO DEVIOT SAFARI 2018 NOTICE OF RACE 1. INTRODUCTION: Entries are invited for the Georgetown to Deviot Safari to be conducted by the Deviot Sailing Club in conjunction with the Georgetown Yacht Club on Saturday 24 March 2018. This is planned to be a fun social event rather than highly competitive race. Low water at Beauty Point is approx 1209 hrs, so boats will have the tide to assist them southwards. 2. Eligible classes All competitors must be a member of a Club affiliated with Sailing Australia, and have a Australian Sailing number. Eligible classes include: • International Mirror, Sabre, Flying 11, Laser, Pacer, NS14, Corsair, B14, 420, 470 29er, 505 • Catamaran classes and trailerable and keel boats, and motor boats. The Organizing Authority may refuse any entry for a boat deemed unsuitable for the event. All those taking part in this event do so at their own risk and responsibility. The Organizing Authority shall not be responsible for the seaworthiness of a boat whose entry has been accepted, or for the adequacy or sufficiency of its equipment. Attention is drawn to ISAF Fundamental Rule 4 which states, “The responsibility for a boat’s decision to participate in a race or to continue racing is hers alone.” No member or members of the Organizing Authority, nor other party involved with this event, shall accept any responsibility for, or be liable for any accident, injury, damage or personal loss (material or otherwise) to any boat, participant or third party, before, during or after any race of the event.

The kids have had FUN and it is always a tremendous sight to see them learn and grow in confidence. We had a range of abilities from front of the fleet regatta sailors through to club sailors still learning to confidently sail in all weathers and everything in between. The Flying 11 Program has been ably coached by Evan Andrews and assisted by a hard- working and enthusiastic parent group. Club Championship The Club Championship was a close tussle between Rebecca Hancock/Eve Peel and Jack Taylor/Shuhei Tomishima with Rebecca and Eve proving the form sailors of the season. The club Championship places were 1st Rebecca Hancock and Eve Peel, 2nd Jack Taylor and Shuhei Tomishima and 3rd Kashi Saunders and Bezi Saunders. Northridge Sailing Club Season Report 2015-16 page 2 Figure 1 Flying 11 Sailing at its Best – Fresh and Fast Other NSC Trophies In other NSC trophies Jack Taylor and Shuei cleaned up the Afternoon Point Score, followed by Kashi and Bezi and Maddy Sloane and Isobel Gosper. Maddy and Isobel turned out to be the perpetual trophy specialists winning the President’s Plate, the Punchbowl Pennant and the Commodores Cup with Warwick Taylor and Namika Keogh 2nd and Sasha Zenari and Thomas Westwood 3rd in the President’s Plate.

My name is Paul Pritchard, I’ve recently returned to the TS16 class after an absence of 16years, sailing from Saratoga with my partner Judith. There have been some significant changes to fleets and TS16 management in that time and at the recent National and NSW State Annual General Meetings I was asked to take up the positions of NSW Race Secretary and new Tillerscope editor taking over from Barrie Heath, Paul Foster and Richard Luckhurst. I would like to particularly acknowledge Barrie and his late wife Pam for their significant contributions to the TS16 Class as it is only through volunteers like this that an Association can exist. At the ripe old age of 83, I met with Barrie at his retirement Village last week and he still has his witty edge. He is still interested in whats going on in the TS world and after going over a few fond memories, Barrie transferred all of the photos and Tillerscope information collected and published from 1999 through to the last edition in 2013.

New and modified classes appear every year and it is important to gather information and review results as quickly as possible. For dinghy classes there have been no changes to the original Yardsticks published for the 2013/14 season, as results for review have not been forthcoming. In the absence of race results data for dinghy classes and new internationally sourced classes, where there is yardstick data from overseas available, a comparison is made with other international classes to derive an equivalent Yachting Victoria yardstick value. This is explained further down in this document. Fortunately for catamaran classes, there has been significant work done by the Kurnell Catamaran Club in reviewing various catamaran ratings, as well as validating the ratings against the international SCHRS system. This work has now been incorporated into the YV yardsticks for catamaran classes. Much appreciation goes to KCC for this good work. Catamaran yardsticks are now contained in a separate document: “YV - Cat Yardsticks13_14 v1.0” USE OF THE YV YARDSTICKS A club which intends to run a race or event under the Yachting Victoria Yardstick system should include in the Notice of Race and in the Sailing Instructions clauses based on the following: 1 The version of the YV Yardstick System that is to be used in calculating the mixed class fleet racing results.

I do beg your understanding! Your club is honoured to have Mr Trent Zimmerman presenting trophies and joining us for lunch at the prize-giving. We are particularly grateful to Mr Zimmerman for his support of the club, in our successful grant application to the Federal Department of Sport. His office has also provided us with our new Australian flag, which you can see proudly flying today. The Federal Department of Sport matched the Willoughby Council financial commitment provided for our essential deck and pile remediation. We are eternally grateful to the Mayor of Willoughby Gail Giles-Gidney, and her team, for their wonderful contribution to our club. 1Shiny new railings! The support provided recognises that we at NSC are the custodians of a community resource. We are not a gated community. Prior to mentioning achievements by the club over the last year (and there have been many), I ask you to spare thoughts for any of our members facing challenges at this time, whether they be health or otherwise.     Australia Day Weekend 24, 25 and 26 January 2015 Jessica Watson OAM Tom King OAM Inverloch Classic Wooden Inverloch Classic Wooden Dinghy Regatta Ambassador Dinghy Regatta Patron December 2014 Newsletter - 1 - South Gippsland Yacht Club Commodore’s Invitation I am really excited to be able to invite and extend a very warm welcome to all sailors and visitors to join us at South Gippsland Yacht Club over the Australia Day Weekend in January 2015 to celebrate Inverloch’s sailing and seaside heritage. On 2 January 1893, when Inverloch was a small and isolated seaside community, an Inverloch Yacht Club conducted a race. Not long afterwards Regatta Days became regular celebrations. Activities included sailing, sculling, swimming, diving and sliding a barrel out over the water along a greasy pole. By the 1920s this vital little town was attracting increasing numbers of holiday makers. Amongst them was Len Morris, who in 1928 launched his 11 foot sailing dinghy ‘Olive’, the basis of a class that became the Moth and later the International Moth Class. Source Inverloch Historical Society This coming Regatta we are very fortunate to be celebrating with two well known sailors- Jessica Watson OAM, ‘2011 Young Australian of the Year’ and Tom King OAM, Mirror World Champion and a 470 Olympic Gold Medallist. On Saturday evening Jessica, introduced by Tom, will give an inspirational presentation on her sailing adventures. The Yacht Club provides a family friendly environment, assists juniors learning to sail and has nurtured junior sailors who have become national and international champions.

In early October 2013, the International Fleet Review, which hosted ships from twenty nations, was a spectacular celebration of the 100th anniversary of the establishment of the Royal Australian Navy and commemorated the arrival of the first seven ships on 4 October 1913. Today’s celebration on Australia Day reminds us of our history, honours those who contributed to that history and celebrates the foundation of our nation. In doing so, we acknowledge the first Australians and pay respect to the Gadigal and Cammeragil people, recognising them as having been fine custodians of Sydney Harbour. On this 178th Australia Day Regatta on Sydney Harbour, hundreds of sailors and their families will participate in a wonderful spectacle on one of the world’s greatest waterways. The Anniversary Regatta, as it was then known, commenced in 1837 just one year after South Australia was proclaimed a colony and before Victoria, Queensland or Tasmania (it was still called Van Diemen’s Land) were formally declared provinces. There is no better way to mark the birth of a nation surrounded by sea and developed through our great maritime heritage than by participating in the Australia Day Regatta. We welcome all those who have entered their craft, large or small, old or new. With the support of our host clubs they will celebrate Australia Day on more than 20 different waterways.
