JOHNSON & BENNY BYTEBIER School of Life Sciences, University of KwaZulu-Natal Pietermaritzburg, Private Bag X01, Scottsville 3209, South Africa; e-mail: [email protected] Abstract Gastrodia madagascariensis, a leafless achlorophyllous orchid, is described and illustrated here. The epithet was originally coined by Perrier de la Bâthie in 1939 for fruiting material found on the eastern coastal plain of Madagascar more than a century ago, but the name was never validly published. This new species is closely related to G. similis from Reunion Island, from which it can be distinguished by the perianth tube spreading towards the apex, the shape of the column and stigma, and the flower colour. The achlorophyllous genus Gastrodia currently comprises five species in the tropical parts of the Afro-Madagascan region, one of which, G. africana, is possibly extinct. We provide an artificial key to distinguish them. In addition, there is also an extratropical species in continental Africa, the introduced G. sesamoides (very local near Cape Town, South Africa).     Puritanical and apocalyptic-minded American missionaries in southeast Africa – a contrast with Bishop John William Colenso Scott Houser Austin, Texas, USA Abstract Six couples of the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions (ABCFM) arrived in Natal, southeast Africa in 1835 – three from north of the Mason-Dixie Line and three from the south – all six indelibly etched with a Puritan con- sciousness and worldview. Utilising a two-prong strategy – from West Africa and southeast Africa – the ABCFM wanted to Christianise and civilise all of “dark” Africa, and thereafter to celebrate together with other European mission societies somewhere on a central Africa mountain top. They perceived their mission to be one of urgency because the end time was near. A cosmic spiritual battle between God and Satan was forming. The God-elect were to take up their battle stations, and together with Him, wage aggressive war against Satan and his kingdom. Prior to the impending final judgment, their ob- jective was to utilise whatever means necessary to pluck and save as many souls as possible from Satan’s bondage. They were determined to do this irrespective of and with disregard to Zulu indifference to the missionaries’ Christianising and civilising message and appeal. Twenty years later, 1855, the Church of England’s bishop to Natal, John William Colenso and his family arrived. Colenso was an individual influenced greatly by the literary critic Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834) and the biblical criticism of Frederick Denison Maurice (1805-1872), parti- cularly, the 1860s Essays and Reviews. He applied himself diligently to the task of learning the Zulu language, and in close daily contact with Zulus, particularly his friend, William Ngidi – sought to listen and respond to their many questions.

Since the death, in 1907, of James Fowler Mackenzie of Allangrange, the last chief, no claimant appears to have come forward, with the exception (and that posthumously) of the late Colonel Alexander Francis Mackenzie of Ord. Gallant officer, perfect gentleman, he .might well have been chosen by the Clan to represent them. Some, even in these changed and ever-changing times, still cling to right of birth, and would have the heir male of the last Chief proved to be such without dispute ; others would make their choice from among the few lairds who still hold their ancient heritage; while others again would include the eldest son of an heir female, or even the heir female herself, being in possession of the family estates and bearing the name and arms of her paternal ancestors. All these considerations are. for the Clan rather than for the genealogist. · To find to-day the true representative of the Mackenzies who, the attainder removed, would be Earl of Seaforth and Lord Mackenzie of Kintail, may be a matter of very great difficulty, perhaps a hopeless quest. Nevertheless. something of the kind has been attempted, by taking the pedigrees back step by step, in order of seniority, and noting in its proper place the existence of any family, whose genealogy has not been traced.

    Educating Emotions in Natal and Western Australia, 1854– 65 Rebecca Swartz University of Cape Town Abstract This article argues that schools acted as important “emotional frontiers” in colonial contexts. As places where missionaries, government and Indigenous people met, colonial schools could connect, disconnect and recreate emotional ties. Drawing on two cases from the mid-nineteenth century, one from Natal and the other from Western Australia, the article highlights the centrality of affect—positive and negative—in histories of colonial schooling. Concerns about the vulnerability of Indigenous children shaped these affective exchanges. The examination of education and schools can provide an important way into thinking about the ambiguities of colonial entanglements and exchange. In Natal, South Africa, in 1856, Anglican Bishop John William Colenso opened the Ekukhanyeni (Place of Light) Institution for the education of sons of chiefs. As the first intake of nineteen scholars arrived at the school in Bishopstowe, near Pietermaritzburg, their mothers refused to leave Ekukhanyeni, sitting on the hills around the school, weeping for the loss of their children.1 Focusing on Ekukhanyeni, and Anne Camfield’s school in Albany, Western Australia, this article argues that schools acted as important “emotional frontiers” in colonial contexts.2 Examining colonial education, uniquely positioned as it was at the interface between domestic worlds and broader imperial projects and ideas, provides an important way into thinking about emotional encounters and exchanges in colonial contexts. When discussing education, colonial governments, missionaries and Indigenous people were often explicit about the nature of colonial projects. In describing what education should do, and how an ideal system would function, they engaged with important questions about childhood, citizenship, race, and what function education could serve in society.

Signed: R Swartz Date: 29.09.2015 ii ‘Ignorant and idle’: Indigenous education in Natal and Western Australia, 1833-1875 Schools, and education more broadly, were pivotal in constructing and maintaining racial difference in the settler colonies of Western Australia and Natal, South Africa. Education must be taken seriously as a way into understanding the intersections between the conflicting, but ultimately reconciled, discourses of humanitarianism and settler colonialism. By considering the education provided for Indigenous children between 1833 and 1875, this thesis shows that schools were essential points of contact between the local government, missionaries and Indigenous people. In examining both colonial policy on education and missionary practice, it highlights conceptions of race, educability and childhood that underpinned education provision in each place. The thesis draws on a variety of sources, including missionary correspondence and imperial and colonial government records. This project seeks to enhance our understanding of education at different scales, making a case for integrating local cases with broader imperial histories. First, the thesis considers the connections between education policy and practice in different sites of Empire. Using case studies of educational change from Britain and the West Indies between 1833 and 1847, New Zealand and the Cape between 1850 and 1865, the thesis highlights continuities in thinking about race and education across diverse parts of the British Empire.
