Magun is a Juju which is applied to punish adulterers in Yoruba land. Using qualitative research methods, the paper identifies two categories of Magun and the varieties subsumed under them. The paper argues that the application of Magun for the punishment of adultery is no longer a common phenomenon as a result of westernization and modernization. Yet, there are rural areas where the application of Magun to punish adultery are still found. It is recommended that extensive researches to be conducted on Magun and other ways of punishing crime and deviant behaviour among the Yoruba people. Furthermore, the adequate documentation of the findings in order to preserve the culture of the people in area of Penology and Criminal Justice System is also highly recommended. Adultery and sexual immorality featured from generation to generation of the human race since the creation of this world. According to Christian in Relationship (2012), the Hebrew law prohibits adultery likewise the religion of the Christi- ans the world over. In the Greco-Roman world, there were stringent laws aga- inst adultery, even though it was applied to a married woman. -

Gainesville: University Press of Florida, 2001. 226 pp. The post-Cold War era stands at a crossroads. Some sort of new world order or disorder is under construction. Our choice to move more toward multilateralism or unilateralism is informed well by inter-religious debate and international law. Both disciplines rightly challenge the “post- Enlightenment divide between religion and politics,” and reinvigorate a spiritual-legal dialogue once thought to be “irrelevant or substandard” (Falk: 1-8, 101). These disciplines can dissemble illusory walls between spiritual/sacred and material/modernist concerns, between realpolitik interests and ethical judgment (Kung 1998: 66). They place praxis and war-peace issues firmly in the context of a suffering humanity and world. Both warn as to how fundamentalism may subjugate peace and security to a demagogic, uncompromising quest. These disciplines also nurture a community of speech that continues to find its voice even as others resort to war. The four books considered in this essay respond to the rush and risk of unnecessary conflict wrought by fundamentalists. -

They had no value system against which their own legal system could be tested.” Du Plessis W. 1 Paper Abstract What explains that in patriarchal societies it is the father who passes on his name to his child while in matriarchal societies the child bears the surname of his mother? The biological reality is the same in both cases: it is the woman who bears the child and gives birth to it. Thus the answer does not lie in biological differences but in cultural ones. So far in feminist literature the analysis relies on a patriarchal background. Not many attempts have been made to consider the way gender has been used in matriarchal societies. -

Book Summary – African Religions and Philosophy Africa is unique among the continents. It has the longest river (Nile), the biggest desert (Sahara), and a vast wealth of natural resources. Many archeologists and other scientists argue that Africa was the birthplace of mankind. Yet Africa is also the poorest (measured by per capita GDP), most colonized, and least developed continent. As a result, Africa and its people have long been disparaged by commentators from the Americas, Asia, and Europe. Native peoples have been called “savages” and native beliefs have been called “primitive”. John S Mbiti, a Kenyan priest of the Anglican Church and Christian philosopher, portrays a different picture of these people and their beliefs in African Religions and Philosophy. Mbiti begins by discussing the pervasive influence of religion in Africa. To the African, everything is religious. There is no demarcation between sacred and secular or material and spiritual. African tribal religions exist for the community, although they support and protect the individual, and promulgate a corporate identity, “I am because we are.” He continues by correcting misconceptions and mislabeling of African beliefs. He objects to the evolutionary paradigm of religion, in which animistic religions (such tribal beliefs in Africa) evolve into polytheism and eventually into monotheism. Characterizing African religions as nothing more than “magic” is also superficial and unfair. The African concept of time is fundamental to tribal religions. Time is not an independent entity, moving forward independently of man’s activities, but a compilation of events. For example, as I write, the clock in front of me ticks. It will tick no matter if I am sleeping and unaware of its movement, or staring at it and concentrating on every move of the pendulum. -

THE PERSONAL POLITICS OF SPIRITUALITY: ON THE LIVED RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN CONTEMPORARY SPIRITUALITY AND SOCIAL JUSTICE AMONG CANADIAN MILLENNIALS by Galen Watts A thesis submitted to the Cultural Studies Graduate Program In conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada April, 2016 Copyright © Galen Watts, 2016 ii Abstract In the last quarter century, a steadily increasing number of North Americans, when asked their religious affiliation, have self-identified as “spiritual but not religious” (SBNR). Resultantly, a wealth of literature on the subject of contemporary spirituality has recently emerged. Some suggest, generally, that we are seeing the emergence of a “progressive spirituality” that is potentially transformative and socially conscious. Conversely, there are scholars who have taken a more critical stance toward this recent cultural development, positing that contemporary spirituality is a byproduct of the self-obsessed culture which saturates the west, or that spirituality, at its worst, is simply a rebranding of religion in order to support consumer culture and the ideology of capitalism. One problem with the majority of this literature is that scholars have tended to offer essentialist or reductionist accounts of spirituality, which rely primarily on a combination of theoretical and textual analysis, ignoring both the lived aspect of spirituality in contemporary society and its variation across generations. This thesis is an attempt to mitigate some of this controversy whilst contributing to this burgeoning scholarly field. I do so by shedding light on contemporary spirituality, as it exists in its lived form. Espousing a lived religion framework, and using the qualitative data I collected from conducting semi-structured interviews with twenty Canadian millennials who consider themselves “spiritual but not religious,” I assess the cogency of the dominant etic accounts of contemporary spirituality in the academic literature. -

Based on fieldwork among members of the British Humanist Association, and its associated local groups, I argue that happiness for the humanists is both the promise and demand of enlightenment, of an appeal to reason over and against what they see as the irrationality of religion. For them, happiness and pleasure are subjective experiences, but they are also indices of philosophical and ethical commitments. -

PAGANISM A brief overview of the history of Paganism The term Pagan comes from the Latin paganus which refers to those who lived in the country. When Christianity began to grow in the Roman Empire, it did so at first primarily in the cities. The people who lived in the country and who continued to believe in “the old ways” came to be known as pagans. Pagans have been broadly defined as anyone involved in any religious act, practice, or ceremony which is not Christian. Jews and Muslims also use the term to refer to anyone outside their religion. Some define paganism as a religion outside of Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism; others simply define it as being without a religion. Paganism, however, often is not identified as a traditional religion per se because it does not have any official doctrine; however, it has some common characteristics within its variety of traditions. One of the common beliefs is the divine presence in nature and the reverence for the natural order in life. In the strictest sense, paganism refers to the authentic religions of ancient Greece and Rome and the surrounding areas. The pagans usually had a polytheistic belief in many gods but only one, which represents the chief god and supreme godhead, is chosen to worship. The Renaissance of the 1500s reintroduced the ancient Greek concepts of Paganism. Pagan symbols and traditions entered European art, music, literature, and ethics. The Reformation of the 1600s, however, put a temporary halt to Pagan thinking. Greek and Roman classics, with their focus on Paganism, were accepted again during the Enlightenment of the 1700s.
