Many cruise ships have been in “warm” lay-up, when they have periodically moved from their berths or anchorages and gone for short voyages locally to give their engines and equipment “a run”, and including production of freshwater, before returning to lay-up. Ships at anchor periodically need to berth to take onboard fuel, food, provisions and other supplies. Some inter-ship crew transfers at sea are being made, outside port limits. With the resumption of “normal” cruising looking very uncertain in many countries in the near future, more cruise ships are likely to move to “cold” lay-up until the situation becomes clearer, whilst others go into shipyards for overhauls and surveys. Many cruise ships have been in lay-up for over a year, as the initial “pause” has been continually extended due to more Covid-19 outbreaks, and many financial assumptions made on the expectation of an initial two-months lockdown have needed reviewing. This has resulted in many recent sales of older ships, and limited cruising in the Mediterranean and Europe, where these areas are being affected by sporadic outbreaks in Covid-19 infections. The largest concentration of laid-up cruise ships is on the Bahamas Banks (east of Miami and south of Freeport) A large number of cruise ships are anchored off the south coast of England, west of Southampton. Another large group are anchored in the South China Sea, NE of Singapore.

    Introduction: German Histories and Pacific Histories INTRODUCTION German Histories and Pacific Histories Ulrike Strasser, Frank Biess, and Hartmut Berghoff S A volume exploring points of contact between Germans and Pacific worlds across the span of several centuries owes much to global history’s ascent in the historical profession in the late twentieth century and early twenty-first century. As global historians have routinely breached conventional boundaries, they have inspired historians in other fields to also interrogate seemingly self-evident units of his- torical analysis and to consider connections between parts of the world that had long been treated in isolation within national historiographical traditions or area studies scholarship. Arguably, one of the most generative effects of global his- tory in the profession at large is this greater freedom to reframe what constitutes meaningful frameworks for historical inquiry, so that we can pose previously unasked questions about dynamic interactions that have, over time, been taking place across unusual geographical clusters in distant parts of the world.1 This volume explores connections between spaces in and around the Pacific and Germans who traveled, explored, and settled in the Pacific, and thus, by implication, also the relationship between Pacific lifeworlds and the German lands from which these migrants journeyed to the Pacific. Looking across the span of the centuries from the early modern period to the eve of World War I, the varied contributions call attention to the long and deep history of German engagement and entanglement in this part of the world. In line with the more recent history on Germany’s role in the world, the volume argues that the German presence in the Pacific was not limited to the relatively brief colonial period, and seeks to open up new perspectives on the German–Pacific dynamic.

The mini-cruises which meet Covid-19 guidelines as they remain within UK waters will feature entertainment -with multiple layers of health and safety measures. The Disney Magic cruise ship plans to sail mostly two and three night voyages, as well as limited four night round-trips from Tilbury, Newcastle, Liverpool and Southampton. Guests will remain aboard the Disney Magic throughout the sailing and favourite Disney stories, characters and entertainment will come to life during the cruises. Disney Magic at Sea staycation sailings are expected to go on sale in April 2021 for sailings this summer, pending the issuance of U.K. government guidelines and authorisations.
