Greek-Cypriots and Turkish-Cypriots have lived apart and totally segregated from 1974 until 2003. This multiple comparative case study employs narrative analysis to investigate ethno-national identity learning among four young adults, two from the Greek-Cypriot community and two from the Turkish-Cypriot community that were born and raised on the divided island of Cyprus during the segregation period. Using the dialogic/performance approach to narrative inquiry I examined these young adults’ experiences as expressed in their narratives to investigate how they understand and learn their ethno-national identity (ethnic and/or national identity). I compared the cases from each community using comparative education methods and identified similarities and differences between the ethno-national identity learning processes of participants from the two communities and the experiences that influenced those processes. This study introduced the term “identity learning” to examine ethno-national identity as a lifelong learning process of becoming, using Dewey’s concepts of experience and learning, and theories from the social constructionist approach to identity. The participants in the study have been learning their ethno-national identity throughout their lives. Learning to be Cypriot, Greek-Cypriot or Turkish-Cypriot was a unique process for each one of them. The study shows that ethno- national identity learning is a lifelong learning process influenced and interconnected with the physical, political, social and cultural environment, individuals, groups and narratives in the environment; and that ethno-national self-identifications among young adults in Cyprus are not always fixed, rather they can be dynamic and they often change, influenced by The aS trap Of Western Anatolia And The Greeks Abstract This dissertation explores the extent to which Persian policies in the western satrapies originated from the provincial capitals in the Anatolian periphery rather than from the royal centers in the Persian heartland in the fifth ec ntury BC. I begin by establishing that the Persian administrative apparatus was a product of a grand reform initiated by Darius I, which was aimed at producing a more uniform and centralized administrative infrastructure. In the following chapter I show that the provincial administration was embedded with chancellors, scribes, secretaries and military personnel of royal status and that the satrapies were periodically inspected by the Persian King or his loyal agents, which allowed to central authorities to monitory the provinces. In chapter three I delineate the extent of satrapal authority, responsibility and resources, and conclude that the satraps were supplied with considerable resources which enabled to fulfill the duties of their office. After the power dynamic between the Great Persian King and his provincial governors and the nature of the office of satrap has been analyzed, I begin a diachronic scrutiny of Greco-Persian interactions in the fifth century BC.

    Das International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) erhebt jährlich Umfragedaten zu sozialwissenschaftlich relevanten Themen. Der vorliegende ISSP Data Report – Religious Attitudes and Religious Change beruht auf ISSP-Daten, die zu drei verschiedenen Zeitpunkten innerhalb von 17 Jahren in bis zu 42 Mitgliedsländern zu Einstellungen gegenüber Kirche und Religion im weitesten Sinne gesammelt wurden. Jedes Kapitel wurde von unterschiedlichen Autoren der ISSP-Gemeinschaft geschrieben und beleuchtet mit Hilfe der ISSP-Daten spezielle Aspekte religiöser Einstellungen und religiösen Wandels im internationalen Vergleich. In der Gesamtschau ergeben sich sowohl Einblicke in das religiöse Leben verschiedener Länder, als auch insbesondere Erkenntnisse zu den Einflussfaktoren religiösen Wandels innerhalb von fast zwei Dekaden. The annual survey of the International Social Survey Programme (ISSP) provides data on topics relevant in social research. This current ISSP Data Report – Religious Attitudes and Religious Change examines data collected at three different points over 17 years, from up to 42 ISSP member countries, covering various facets of respondents’ attitudes towards Church and Religion. Individual chapters were written by different members of the ISSP community thereby offering a cross-national, comparative perspective on particular aspects of religious attitudes and religious change via ISSP data. Muller The Ohio State University Cypriot Greek contrasts singleton and geminate consonants in word-initial position. These segments are of particular interest to phonologists since two divergent representational frameworks, moraic theory (Hayes 1989) and timing-based frameworks, including CV or X-slot theory (Clements and Keyser 1983, Levin 1985), account for the behavior of initial geminates in substantially different ways. The investigation of geminates in Cypriot Greek allows these differences to be explored. As will be demonstrated in a formal analysis of the facts, the patterning of geminates in Cypriot is best accounted for by assuming that the segments are dominated by abstract timing units such as X- or C-slots, rather than by a unit of prosodic weight such as the mora. Introduction Cypriot Greek is of particular interest, not only because it is one of the few varieties of Modern Greek maintaining a consonant length contrast, but more importantly because it exhibits this contrast in word-initial position: péfti ‘Thursday’ vs. ppéfti ‘he falls’.Although word-initial geminates are less common than their word-medial counterparts, they are attested in dozens of the world’s languages in addition to Cypriot Greek.

    BUJSS 9/2 (2016), 99-115 DOI: http://dx.doi.org/10.18221/bujss.33634 * ETHNIC NATIONALISM AND CONSOCIATIONAL DEMOCRACY IN CYPRUS 1 Pinar Erkem ABSTRACT The 1960 Cyprus Republic, which had a bi-communal power-sharing system, could not have lasted for long and it turned from consociational democracy to majoritarian in 1963 after ethnic conflict. Attempts to find a solution to Cyprus problem still focus on ethnic power-sharing but the conditions and bi-communal relations prior to 1960 system, which are conducive to its failure, are not adequately consumed. The paper argues that, the reasons for the prolonged conflict derive from ethnic rivalry and lack of an overarching loyalty. Modernization, kin-state relations and colonial policies are the contributing factors. This paper aims to contribute to future institutional designs for not only Cyprus but for all divided societies.     Cypriot Speech Database: Data Collection and Greek to Cypriot Dialect Adaptation Nikos Fakotakis Wire Communications Laboratory Electrical and Computer Engineering Dept. University of Patras 265 00 Rion, Patras, Greece [email protected] Abstract This paper describes the Cypriot Greek speech database collected in the framework of the European project OrienTel (IST-2000- 28373) and the acoustic models adaptation techniques that were applied in order to perform dialect adaptation from Greek to Cypriot. Greek and Cypriot Greek share the same phoneme set. However, there are some differences in the way the same phonemes are pronounced. That is, Cypriot Greek may be considered as a variation of standard Greek. Utterances from 500 speakers are used (450 for training, that is, performing adaptation, and 50 as testing material). Two tools are available for training, adaptation and evaluation of the acoustic models. These are the Wire Communications Laboratory (WCL) recognition tool and the Hidden Markov Models toolkit (HTK). For both recognition engines Greek acoustic models were already available using the SpeechDat-II Greek telephone database. Two well-known techniques are applied for adapting the Greek acoustic models to the new data: Maximum Likelihood Linear Regression (MLLR) and Maximum A-Posteriori (MAP) adaptation. Pure Cypriot Greek models are also trained using only the Cypriot Greek database, to be compared with the adapted ones. Preliminary results show a small improvement in the performance of the adapted models over the pure Greek and Cypriot Greek models. It is very vital and actively used in CT to express different modal semantics such as (irreal) wish, intention, necessity etc., for instance: (1) ister gid-eyimdi /git-sindi want-s(h)e go-Vol1SG-idi / go-Vol3SG-idi ‘s(h)e wants (that) I (would/should) go’ / s(h)e wants (that) s(he) (would/should) go’ (2) al-ayīm-dī o zaman? take-Vol1SG-idi then ‘should I take (it) then?’ Previous scholars such as Abdurrazak (2012), Demir (2002a, 2002b, 2007a, 2007b), Demir&Johanson (2006), Gulle (2011), Kappler&Tsiplakou (2015), Kappler (2008) have already analysed and compared syntactical properties of the <Vol +-(i)di> constructions in CT with analogies in Standard Turkish [ST] or in Turkish varieties in Turkey and beyond as well as in Cypriot Greek [CG], for instance: CT (1) ister gideyimdi/gitsindi ST (1) git-mem- i / git-me-sini istiyor go-VNPOSS-ACC go-VN-POSS3SG wants s(he) ‘s(h)e wants (that) I (would/should) go home’ / s(h)e wants (that) s(he) (would/should) go’ While the CT speaker uses <Vol+-(i)di> to express possibility, wish etc., the ST speaker achieves the same purposes by other distinctive grammatical means, such as nominalised verbs [above abbreviated as VN].
