Welcome to the heady days of the British House of Commons! My name is Thadeus Obora, and I will be serving as your Crisis Director. I am a fourth-year student and a History/Political Science double major in the college, with a great love for all things Industrial Revolution and historical. I hail from Naperville, in the suburbs of Chicago (Neuqua Valley HS) and love the opportunity I have now to finally live in Chicago. As somebody who almost went to MUNUC when I was in high school, I relish the opportunity to participate in the behind-the-scenes antics that make this conference run well - so much so that after being an Assistant Chair on the Cuba 1960 committee my first year, Chair on the German Unification committee by second year, and the Japan 1960 committee last year, I have returned as an executive! When not frantically working on the background guide for this committee, I can be found exploring the city for new restaurants and foodie-locales, browsing eBay, or repairing vintage fountain pens and typewriters - an archaic hobby that I use to finance all of the binge-eating. -

Year 7 History Project Middle Ages - Power and Protest Session 1: King Edward I • In the following slides you will find information relating to: • Edward and parliament • Edward and Wales • Edward and the War of Independence Edward I • Edward facts • Edward was born in 1239 • In 1264 Edward was held prisoner when English barons rebelled against his father Henry III. • In 1271 Edward joined a Christian Crusade to try and free Jerusalem from Muslim control • Edward took the throne in 1272. • Edward fought a long campaign to conquer Wales • Edward built lots of castles in Wales such as Caernarfon, Conwy and Harlech castles • Edward had two nicknames - 'Longshanks' because he was so tall and the 'Hammer of the Scots' for obvious reasons • Edward’s war with Scotland eventually brought about his death when he died from sickness in 1307 when marching towards the Scottish Border. Llywelyn Ap Gruffudd • In 1275 Llywelyn ap Gruffudd of Wales refused to pay homage (respect) to King Edward I of England as he believed himself ruler of Wales after fighting his own uncles for the right. • This sparked a war that would result in the end of Llywelyn ap Gruffudd (the last) who was killed fighting the English in 1282 after several years of on off warfare. • Edward I destroyed the armies of Llywelyn when they revolted against England trying to take complete control of Wales. • As a result Llywelyn is known as the last native ruler of Wales. • After his death Edward I took his head from his body and placed it on a spike in London to deter future revolts. -

Although New Zealand has no single document that is a constitution, the elements of our constitutional arrangements are contained in several Acts of Parliament, such as the Legislature Act 1908, the Constitutional Act 1986, the New Zealand Bill of Rights Act 1990, and the Electoral Act 1993. These laws include provisions on how we vote, the term of Parliament, the formation of the Government, and individual rights. Chapter 17 concludes with a look at the policy implications of the book's findings for democratizing and newly democratic countries. CHAPTER 2 THE WESTMINSTER MODEL OF DEMOCRACY n this book I use the term Westminster model interchange ably with majoritarian model to refer to a general model of Idemocracy. It may also be used more narrowly to denote the main characteristics of British parliamentary and governmental institutions (G. Wilson 1994; Mahler 1997)-the Parliament of the United Kingdom meets in the Palace of Westminster in Lon don. The British version of the Westminster model is both the original and the best-known example of this model. It is also widely admired. Richard Rose (1974, 131) points out that, "with confidence born of continental isolation, Americans have come to assume that their institutions-the Presidency, Congress and the Supreme Court-are the prototype of what should be adopted elsewhere." But American political scientists, especially those in the field of comparative politics, have tended to hold the British system of government in at least equally high esteem (Kavanagh 1974). One famous political scientist who fervently admired the West minster model was President Woodrow Wilson. W. Maitland. The first sketch of this essay took the form of six public lectures delivered in London in Lent Term 1913, which were expanded into fifteen lectures given on the Goldwin Smith foundation at Cornell University and else- where in the United States in the following spring. The manuscript was completed, save for some notes and refer- ences, in August 1915, when the increasing tension of the war put a stop to remoter studies. During these seventeen years the history of the English parliament has attracted the labour of several learned historians, and particular acknowledgement is due to Pro- fessor C. H. McIlwain's High Court of Parliament, which, coming into my hands at the end of 1912, confirmed the trend of my investigations and supplied me with fresh ideas and illustrations. Another American book, Professor Bald- win's King's Council in the Middle Ages, published in 1914, threw valuable light on a collateral subject. THE REOORDING OF THE LAW AND THE PRIVY SEA.L Official records started to be kept at the end of the XIlth century, and to give a more exact date, systematic recording began in 1199. At first ali documents were done in duplicate on parchment membranes., and then sevvn end tu ead and rolled up. 'I'he duplicates were done on three separate rolls, i. e. charter, letters patent and letter close. The Charter Roll began in 1199, at which time the Chancery was becoming increa singly forma! and important, and thercfore less convenient With regard to the private affairs of the king. It was still part of the king's househo1d in theory at the end of the Xllth century, but was becoming more and more departmentalised and was dealing only with the most important public business. Early in the Xillth century there started the procedure of «going out.. of-courb, in other words a public department was introduced, a.."'1d this led to a new development in the official use of seals. In administrative business a ilif ferent seal was used for different purposes, as one seal was not enoug'h iıı large countries. There were three methods of clifferentiation: i) Pure duplicates, ü) Different seals in different parts of the kingdom, iii) Different seals for different departments. Of these i) and iii) began under Henry IIl and these had two dupli~ cates, one of which was kept by the Chancellor and the other by the Treasury. The latter was kept by the ChanceUor's clerk in order to avoid delay in transactions of business. -
