I suppose all good things have to come to an end but I must admit to being more than a little discomfited to have to inform you that this will be the A!ast "Fellrunner" that I will be editing. After nineteen years serving on the FRA Committee, which has involved the production of fifteen FRA Calendars and eighteen issues of the magazine, I have decided with great regret to resign from the FRA Committee following last night's (Thursday 5th October) meeting. I have enjoyed immensely being Editor of the "Fellrunner" and had hoped to continue for a number of years to come but although a large portion of the magazine is composed of material of general interest to the fellrunning community it is, nevertheless, the official information outlet for the FRA and I cannot bring myself any longer to be associated with the policies the FRA now appears to be following with regard to the future of the sport and UK Athletics' role in it. I have no wish to denigrate in any way my erstwhile colleagues on the FRA Committee, quite the opposite - we are most fortunate to have had on the Committee over the years the numbers of people who have given up vast amounts of their time and energy to ensure that the necessary organisations have been in place and every one of them deserves the utmost respect of the fell-running community for so doing - but 1 cannot reconcile myself to the direction in which we appear to be travelling. Selwyn Wright once memorably said that the rules of fell-running ought to be able to be written on the back of a postage stamp and I'm sure that most of us would agree with that philosophy. Fell-running is a gloriously simple, slightly anarchic activity with a committee composed of active (to a greater or lesser extent, depending on the state of their knees, ankles, etc. !!)     WOOLER WHEEL CLASSIC 3 OCTOBER 2015 RIDER MANUAL Welcome to the Wooler Wheel Classic cycle sportive. This manual contains all the information you need for the Wooler Wheel Classic 100 & 50 rides on 3 October 2015. It is important that you read it. It provides vital information about the operation of the rides and it will enhance your enjoyment of the day. The Wooler Wheel is conducted under the regulations of British Cycling. Please note that the HQ for the rides (where you register, start and finish your ride) will be at the John Swan Ltd Wooler Livestock Centre, Berwick Road, Wooler NE71 6SL (otherwise known as the Wooler Mart). For this event we have the dedicated use of two large grazing fields adjoining the Wooler Mart for car parking. They give quick and easy access to the registration area and can accommodate around 400 cars. This will be sufficient to take all the cars of the entrants. Parking will be supervised. He has lived Yorkshire Dales in the north all his life and, since his teenage years, has attempted to spend every possible waking hour on the hills and mountains. Pete holds a long service award for volunteering as a member of a mountain rescue team, 40 runs and he completed the Munros in 2003. He regularly com- petes in fell races and mountain marathons in the North in the National Park, of England and Scotland, winning a class of the Saunders Lakeland Mountain Marathon in 2013. including the Three Peaks Pete lives on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales with his wife, two boys and a daily view of Ingleborough to keep by Pete Ellwood him company.     Scafell Pike from Borrowdale The main ridge of the Scafell Pike massif is traversed on its northwest flank by a spectacular path known as the Corridor Route. It climbs a rough but steady route from Sty Head to Lingmell Col from where it is a simple climb up the summit screes to the top of Scafell Pike passing along the way through some of England's finest mountain scenery. Sty Head can of course be gained from Wasdale but if you reach it from Borrowdale it will allow you a return over the main ridge taking in Broad Crag, Ill Crag and Great End after which you can descend via Esk Hause and the dramatic course of the Grains Gill path. Grade: Strenuous Start/Finish: Seathwaite, Borrowdale (GR NY 236 122) Distance: 14 miles (8.7km) Time: 7 hours Height gain: 1053m Terrain: valley, rocky gill, rough craggy fellside, scree and rocky summit ridge. Maps: OS Landranger 90, OS Explorer OL 4 & 6, Harveys' Superwalker (1:25 000 Western Lakeland). 1. Take the bridleway south to Stockley Bridge, cross it and climb the steep zig-zags west then head south west alongside Styhead Gill to Styhead Tarn. 2. Turn east at the stretcher box and follow the bridleway a short distance to a fork. Take the right branch and descend onto the Corridor Route which is followed as it climbs steadily south southwest to Lingmell Col. Turn left and follow the rough path over scree and boulders south east to Scafell Pike. 3. From the summit of Scafell Pike head north east along the main ridge past Broad Crag and Ill Crag to the col at the head of Calf Cove.
