    Profile Nippon Kaiji Kyokai, also known as ClassNK or just "NK", is a ship classification society. The principal work of the Society's expert technical staff is to undertake surveys to ensure that the rules which it has developed are applied to newbuildings and existing ships, in order to ensure the safety of these vessels and the prevention of marine pollution. The rules cover not only hull structures, but also safety equipment, cargo handling gear, engines, machinery, and electrical and electronic systems, among others. At the end of December 2006, the Society had 6,636 ships totaling 144,438,721 gross tons on its Register. This figure represents approximately 21% of the world merchant fleet currently Contents under class. Total capacity : 126,000 m3 of Liquid Natural Gas at a temperature of -162°C Robin des Bois - 1 - Shipbreaking # 62 – June 2021 Ramdane Abane. IMO 7411961. Length 274 m. Algerian flag. Classification society Bureau Veritas. Built in1981 in Saint-Nazaire (France) by Chantiers de l'Atlantique. She was the last in a series of 5 vessels built in France for Compagnie Nationale Algerienne De Navigation. Throughout their trading life, they have ensured the export of Algerian natural gas from Arzew and Skikda ports to the clients of Sonatrach, the Algerian national oil and gas company. Montoir (France), le 14 March 2008. © Erwan Guéguéniat The 5 LNG tankers were all named after heroes of the Algerian war of independence. The Mostefa Ben Boulaïd, Larbi Ben M'hidi and Bachir Chihani built by Constructions navales et industrielles de la Méditerranée in La Seyne-sur-Mer were scrapped in Turkey in 2017 and 2018 (see "Shipbreaking" # 44, p 31 and # °48, p. 32-33), the Mourad Didouche built in Saint-Nazaire was deflagged, renamed Mourato and beached in Bangladesh in February 2019 (see "Shipbreaking" # 55 p. 41). The Ramdane Abane, the last of the series, is also the last to be scrapped. On October 27, 2014, loaded with 80,000 m3 of gas destined for the Turkish terminal of Botas in the Sea of Marmara, she suffered a blackout in the Dardanelles Strait.

In number of ships to be demolished as well as tonnage, India, with 120 ships (42%), remains destination number 1 before Bangladesh with 55 (24%), Pakistan with 25 (11%), and China with 23 (9%). The accumulated demolition will permit the recycling of nearly 2 million tons of metal. The crisis is over ! The prices offered by the demolition yards have significantly increased and continue to increase in the yards of the Indian subcontinent, but also in China; they have reached $400, even $500 for oil tankers and more for ships containing stainless steel.

Suite 410 n etwork Seattle, Washington 98104 USA P 206.652.5555 F 206.652.5750 www.ban.org TO: Bill Noggle U.S. Environmental Protection Agency FROM: Colby Self Basel Action Network DATE: March 28, 2013 SUBJECT: Comment on “Draft Technical Guidance for Determining the Presence of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) at Regulated Concentrations on Vessels (Ships) to be Reflagged” On June 27, 2011, the U.S. Maritime Administration (MARAD) published a Clarification in the Federal Register titled “Approval Process for Transfers to Foreign Registry of U.S. Documented Vessels Over 1,000 Gross Tons”, (76 FR 37280). The notice elaborated on a new process that required ship owners, who intended to transfer a U.S. flagged ship to a foreign registry, to first certify that the vessel does not contain regulated concentrations of PCBs. MARAD took this initiative in an attempt to prevent U.S. ships from being exported in violation of the U.S. Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA), an act that is administered by EPA. EPA has now drafted the guidance document titled, “Draft Technical Guidance for Determining the Presence of Polychlorinated Biphenyls (PCBs) at Regulated Concentrations on Vessels (Ships) to be Reflagged”.
