  • The Commercial & Technical Evolution of the Ferry
THE COMMERCIAL & TECHNICAL EVOLUTION OF THE FERRY INDUSTRY 1948-1987 By William (Bill) Moses M.B.E. A thesis presented to the University of Greenwich in fulfilment of the thesis requirement for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy October 2010 DECLARATION “I certify that this work has not been accepted in substance for any degree, and is not concurrently being submitted for any degree other than that of Doctor of Philosophy being studied at the University of Greenwich. I also declare that this work is the result of my own investigations except where otherwise identified by references and that I have not plagiarised another’s work”. ……………………………………………. William Trevor Moses Date: ………………………………. ……………………………………………… Professor Sarah Palmer Date: ………………………………. ……………………………………………… Professor Alastair Couper Date:……………………………. ii Acknowledgements There are a number of individuals that I am indebted to for their support and encouragement, but before mentioning some by name I would like to acknowledge and indeed dedicate this thesis to my late Mother and Father. Coming from a seafaring tradition it was perhaps no wonder that I would follow but not without hardship on the part of my parents as they struggled to raise the necessary funds for my books and officer cadet uniform. Their confidence and encouragement has since allowed me to achieve a great deal and I am only saddened by the fact that they are not here to share this latest and arguably most prestigious attainment. It is also appropriate to mention the ferry industry, made up on an intrepid band of individuals that I have been proud and privileged to work alongside for as many decades as covered by this thesis.

Perspectives and improvements on their environmental efficiency. ii Acknowledgments First of all, I would like to express my most sincere thanks to my supervisor Dr. Francesc Xavier Martínez de Osés for his accessibility and continuous support of my master’s thesis, for his wise advice and suggestions, which guided me throughout the development of this paper, and also for sharing with me his immense knowledge about marine pollution and maritime activities. Second, I would like to make special mention to my grandparents, Llorenç Sastre and Jeroni Sampol, with whom I will forever be grateful for bringing me up in my infancy, instilling their outlook on life and essential values on me and their undying love for me. Third, I would like to thank my parents for providing me with all the things that a child can ever deserve and for their attention and support in the good times and most important in the bad ones. To my father for his unceasing encouragement to achieve my academic and career goals, and my mother for her dedication and patience during my adolescence. Then, I would like to thank my university colleague, Eduardo Sáenz, for his feedback, understanding about maritime subjects related to my study and of course long-life friendship.

  • Nilotic Livestock Transport in Ancient Egypt
NILOTIC LIVESTOCK TRANSPORT IN ANCIENT EGYPT A Thesis by MEGAN CHRISTINE HAGSETH Submitted to the Office of Graduate and Professional Studies of Texas A&M University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS Chair of Committee, Shelley Wachsmann Committee Members, Deborah Carlson Kevin Glowacki Head of Department, Cynthia Werner December 2015 Major Subject: Anthropology Copyright 2015 Megan Christine Hagseth ABSTRACT Cattle in ancient Egypt were a measure of wealth and prestige, and as such figured prominently in tomb art, inscriptions, and even literature. Elite titles and roles such as “Overseer of Cattle” were granted to high ranking officials or nobility during the New Kingdom, and large numbers of cattle were collected as tribute throughout the Pharaonic period. The movement of these animals along the Nile, whether for secular or sacred reasons, required the development of specialized vessels. The cattle ferries of ancient Egypt provide a unique opportunity to understand facets of the Egyptian maritime community. A comparison of cattle barges with other Egyptian ship types from these same periods leads to a better understand how these vessels fit into the larger maritime paradigm, and also serves to test the plausibility of aspects such as vessel size and design, composition of crew, and lading strategies. Examples of cargo vessels similar to the cattle barge have been found and excavated, such as ships from Thonis-Heracleion, Ayn Sukhna, Alexandria, and Mersa/Wadi Gawasis. This type of cross analysis allows for the tentative reconstruction of a vessel type which has not been identified previously in the archaeological record.

  • Logistics in Focus: U.S. Waterways by Max Schlubach
Logistics in Focus: U.S. Waterways By Max Schlubach For more than 200 years, tugboats, towboats and barges have plied the United States’ vast inland river system, its Great Lakes and its three coasts. This distinctly American industry has built the coast of the Great Lakes into a global manufacturing center, enabled the U.S. to become the world’s largest wheat exporter and, today, provides the flexibility needed to become a major oil producer. Yet despite the critical role that it plays in the U.S. economy, the inland and coastal maritime industry is little known outside of the transportation sector. 14 Brown Brothers Harriman | COMMODITY MARKETS UPDATE The tugboat, towboat and barge industry is the largest segment Jones Act Vessel Type of the U.S. merchant maritime fleet and includes 5,476 tugboats Ferries Tankers and towboats and 23,000 barges that operate along the Atlantic, 591 61 0.7% Pacific and Gulf Coasts, the Great Lakes and the inland river sys- 6.5% tem.
