PAGE 4 OCEAN GROVE AND NEPTUNE TIMES THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 10, 1994 Editorial Buckley Incident Is Far From Over

Asbury Park officials are scurrying to sweep the arrest of Mayor Dennis Buckley under the rug as quickly as possible and get back to the business of running an already troubled city. The soon-to-be former mayor has enrolled in a drug re habilitation program, City Council has asked for his resig nation, and his attorney is working on a deal with the County Prosecutor that will allow him to avoid a trial, and most importarffly - to avoid a prison sentence. Within a few weeks, Buckley most likely will be out of jail and out of office. City Council will name a replacement, and officials will proclaim that the whole unpleasant incident is over. Yet rather than rushing to close the book on this situation, perhaps we should take a moment to examine the repercus sions of the incident and ask some of the questions that will remain unanswered if the matter is quickly swept away. For starters, let’s not forget that Buckley ran on a ticket with three other people who won seats on the City Council. They campaigned together, and, we might assume, social ized together. How much did his running mates know about his prob lem? if they did know, who were they helping by keeping quiet? Certainly not Mr. Buckley, and certainly not the citizens of Asbury Park. Secondly, to what extent did Buckley's drug problem hamper his ability as mayor? Perhaps the most disturbing aspect of the Buckley arrest, is that he was caught buying cocaine in a bar iess than an hour before he was scheduled to give a deposition in the city’s ongoing litigation over the stalled beachfront rede velopment project. "I guess he wanted to have a few drinks and buy some cocaine before his deposition," County Prosecutor John Kaye saiehsarcastlCSITiy. Was this typical behavior for the dishonorable mayor during his seven-month tenure? What other duties did Mr. Buckley find it necessary to perform under the influence? Again, excuse us for finding it just a little difficult to believe that no one else knew, or that Buckley’s actions only harmed himself. He was a public official and he, and everyone around him, should be accountable to the public for his actions. It seems far too easy, and far too convenient, to merely sweep th5 situation under the rug without first investigating the extent of the damage Buckley’s drug problem may have caused the citizens of Asbury Park. Even if his colleagues can show that none of Buckley’s actions or decisions were hampered by his drug problem, it’s shortsighted to ignore the obvious damage the incident will have on the city’s already battered image. What are young children going to think when they see a mayor escape going to prison for buying cocaine, while city officials urge the Tactical Narcotics Team to haul their friends and family off to jail in the middle of the night? Let’s not forget that Buckley and his friends got elected on a platform to free the city of drugs, something that national newscasters have pointed out regularly in recent weeks while showing the world that Asbury Park officials have a "Do as I say, not as I do?" approach to government. If Asbury Park is going to pick itself up and move forward Questions MADD Leadership after this incident, the administration must face the situation Sincerest EDITOR, TIMES: this compiete turnabout. legacy finds MADD today for the embarrassment that it is and be willing to face the Only one who has per During Lightner’s MADD ten lobbying for a .05% stan Thanks problems created by this public disgrace head on. sonally experienced the trag ure, she continuaiiy casti dard.
