Final guest count is LUNCH & required no later than one week prior to the event. The final count is the minimum number of guests for which the host will be charged. We will be exploring the area and come up with a drive.     About Widmer Brothers In 1979, with the legalization of home brewing in Oregon, brothers Kurt and Rob Widmer began making beer for themselves and their friends. By 1984 when Craft brewing was legalized, they started their own brewery at Widmer Brewing Company. In 1986 the owner of The Dublin Pub, which already carried the brother’s Altbier and Weizenbier, was eager to expand his offerings and asked the brothers to make a third for him. The brewery only had two fermenters at the time so to save space, they simply left the Weizenbier unfil- tered and impressively cloudy, thus creating the first American-Style Hefeweizen. In 1990 Kurt & Rob moved the brewery to its current location in North Portland and renamed the brewery Widmer Brothers Brewing. Today, the unfiltered cloudy beer is the company’s signature brew and one of the best selling wheat beers, winning numerous Gold Medals at festivals across the country.     Got Beer? Make Sure It’s Your Own Brewers, be careful when picking a name for your beer. You wouldn’t expect craft brewers to be a litigious bunch, but believe it or not, there’s a lot of suing going on, and it’s been happening for years. Not only do craft breweries have to protect themselves from legal Armageddon by the likes of AB-Inbev, but even the small champions of craft beer have been dishing out the “cease and desist” orders a little too often lately. Thirsty Dog took issue with a brewery called Sleepy Dog over a beer called “Leghumper,” which is at least understandable as Thirsty Dog has an “Old Leghumper” porter. There were even similarities in label art, but there are, at last count, 4,000 breweries with “dog” in the name. This was bound to happen eventually. And considering the number of different names using a play on the word “hops (eg, Hoptimus Prime, Hoptical Illusion), it’s only a matter of time before people are using the same name, what with new breweries opening with the frequency of Starbucks in the ’90s. Rogue has been dishing out the lawyer fees, going after Rogue Harbor brewing, Gone Rogue Pub and others. Look out, Rogue Island. 10 Barrel, part of the AB-Inbev empire since 2014, recently sent a cease and desist to Mason’s Brewing in Oregon demanding they change the name of “Hipster Apocalypse” because they make a beer called “Apocalypse IPA,” despite the fact that they have different labels.     Tap Into History: The Birth of the Oregon Hops and Brewing Archives Tiah Edmunson-Morton, Oregon State University Oregon is a special place, known for stunning natural beauty, a good amount of rain, and a predilection for pushing the boundaries of cultural norms. Its cities are surrounded by rural landscapes of agricultural farmland and forests; much of our history and heritage is intertwined with the politics of environmental protection and land use, the economics and sustainability of farming, and social considerations related to labor and employment. Oregonians are generally interested in knowing who grows their food, and who brews their beer. Brewing and imbibing aren't new to Oregon's economy and culture, and it’s fair to say that our state has a complicated relationship to its vices. Our history includes a healthy pre- Prohibition brewing scene, early local and statewide prohibition tied to state suffrage and temperance movements, counterculture hippies with an interest in mind-altering substances, and home brewing that certainly predates its legalization in 1978.1 When Chuck Coury opened Oregon’s first microbrewery in 1980 he stepped into this legacy and paved the way for an artisanal commercial craft brewing industry. It wasn’t long before the state took its place at the epicenter of a renaissance, one with brewers that were both curious and dedicated to their craft. The modern community of consumers, farmers, and brewers continues to connect with their predecessors. Today brewers recreate historic styles and pride themselves in using traditional ingredients, many sourced from the hop farms that have been a staple on the landscape since the first commercial hop yard was established in Buena Vista, Oregon in 1867.2 As the state’s land grant school, research at Oregon State University (OSU) on these communities and industries has its own historical roots.
