Eternal Perspective…from page 8

Because in everything you do, there‟s always a consequence.

So freshies, I hope you will enjoy your stay here. Don‟t be afraid to make mistakes, I know it‟s easier said than done. If you have questions, ask. If you know something, share it. If you need help, don‟t hesitate to ask someone. You won‟t survive college alone.

And for the oldies, never think too highly of yourselves. Not because we are here longer doesn‟t mean we‟re smarter than the new ones. Let‟s give them a warm welcome and prove to them that Kalayaan College is more than just a school but a place where you can build meaningful relationships. Good morning and have a blessed day.

ECCD’s Health and Nutrition Seminar for Kids

Proper nutrition promotes a healthy wellbeing and has an influence on one‟s family life. Malnutrition is not just the lack of sustenance but also the body‟s deprivation of essential nutrients due to poor eating habits. With this in mind, the Family Life Education (FLCD 147) class visited Barangay Kaunlaran‟s Day Care Center to conduct a seminar on Health and Nutrition.

ECCD students: Jules Austria, Trixie Dizon, Rustin Francisco and Pai Valenzuela administered activities to promote healthy living among the 4-year old students.

Jules Austria started the activity by the story of “Felimon Mamon” from Christine Bellen‟s book, a boy who changed to a new lifestyle and better eating habits to attain his dream of starring in their school play and to improve his health as well. The children were able to expound the idea of healthy living by giving their own tips on other ways Filemon could lose weight. To encourage the kids to take part in more physical activities, the story telling was followed by a music and movement activity led by Rustin Francisco. They performed exercise routines and danced along to music. Some children volunteered to demonstrate their favorite dance moves. The activity was about the food pyramid and the importance of having a balanced diet. Pai Valenzuela discussed the nutrients that come from each food group and what they do to our bodies. The children were able to name and sort food by their respective categories. They recognized that some food like chips, sweets and carbonated drinks are okay to consume only in moderation. The final activity, handled by Trixie Dizon, was a demonstration on how the kids can prepare their own healthy snack. The children got participated in making their sandwiches and drinks. Some of them peeled eggs for the egg salad sandwhich other squeezed calamansi for the juice. To end the lesson plan based seminar, the children, day care teacher and the 4 ECCD students sampled and enjoyed the healthy snack that they all helped prepare.

One is never too young to learn about healthy living. Through this lesson plan based seminar, the FLCD 147 class was able to reach out to 4-year-olds on the importance of being active and eating right. Hopefully by encouraging these children to be active and to eat nutritious food, the children have a higher chance of reaching their full potential.

TABANG KC!

Two major natural disasters have ravaged our country: the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that hit Central Visayas on October 15, 2013 and super typhoon

Yolanda which struck Leyte, Eastern Samar and nearby provinces last November 8, 2013. These calamities killed thousands, caused damage to infrastructure and properties and left so many of our fellowmen displaced with no basic necessities.

To aid in the relief efforts, Kalayaan College organized a donation drive to help the survivors of the typhoon. A donation‟s drop-off area was set-up for in- kind donations and cash donations were also accepted. Several boxes of used clothings, beddings and blankets, bottled waters, food and sanitary items from our students, faculty, and staff were received.

In this light, Kalayaan College administration decided to cancel the General Christmas Party and donated instead the P 20,000.00 budget. Soka Gakkai International, Philippines also donated cash amounting to P10,000.00. The total cash donation received was P37,500.00 from KC, SGI, its Officers, faculty and staff. It was used to buy food items like rice, canned goods, noodles, diapers, sanitary napkins, medicines, alcohol, bottled water and other needed items.

The first batch of donation was delivered to the Kapuso Foundation of GMA Network. The 2nd and 3rd batches were delivered to Red Cross Quezon City by the KC Administrative Staff.

Thank you very much for all the donations. Let us all continue to nurture the spirit of compassion and altruism not just during disasters but in every moment of our lives.
