Rebecca + Elliott "Love recognizes no barriers. It jumps hurdles, leaps fences, penetrates walls to arrive at its destination full of hope." Maya Angelou Hello! Welcome to our story. • Recommended Reading List Grades 9-12
Recommended Reading List Grades 9-12 The Hate U Give meets Just Mercy in this unflinching yet uplifting first novel that explores the racist injustices in the American justice system. Every week, seventeen-year-old Tracy Beaumont writes letters to Innocence X, asking the organization to help her father, an innocent Black man on death row. After seven years, Tracy is running out of time--her dad has only 267 days left. Then the unthinkable happens. The police arrive in the night, and Tracy's older brother, Jamal, goes from being a bright, promising track star to a "thug" on the run, accused of killing a white girl. Determined to save her brother, Tracy investigates what really happened between Jamal and Angela down at the Pike. But will Tracy and her family survive the uncovering of the skeletons of their Texas town's racist history that still haunt the present? Available in print, ebook, and audio format from the Fresno County Public Library This collection of sixty-four poems by poets who come from all over the world shares the experience of first- and second-generation young adult immigrants and refugees. Whether it’s cultural and language differences, homesickness, social exclusion, racism, stereotyping, or questions of identity, the Dreamers, immigrants, and refugee poets included here encourage readers to honor their roots as well as explore new paths, offering empathy and hope. Many of the struggles described are faced by young people everywhere: isolation, self-doubt, confusion, and emotional dislocation. But also joy, discovery, safety, and family. This is a hopeful, beautiful, and meaningful book for any reader.

  • The Way to Brave
Section 3 GOD BreakS US 1 SAMUEL 16:10–11 Jesse had seven of his sons pass before Samuel, but Samuel said to him, “The LORD has not chosen these.” So he asked Jesse, “Are these all the sons you have?” “There is still the youngest,” Jesse answered. “He is tending the sheep.” WaytoBrave.indd 99 12/20/17 4:04 PM A traditional Jewish History teaches that David was an illegitimate son of Jesse and therefore a reminder of shame and carrier of scorn.1 Is this why David’s famous Psalm 51 prayer of repentance notes that “in sin did my mother conceive me” (KJV)? Is this why David, like Cinderella, was less loved by his parent than his half-siblings and left behind to ignominious tasks while they got to experience an exciting field trip to hang with the handsome prince and his crew? I think so. And I believe all this pain was God’s blessing in disguise to David because it broke his pride early and compelled him to put his faith in God. So David’s pride was broken early, and his resulting humble desire that God get all glory gave him confidence that, even though he had to face Goliath, it was really just him facing Goliath on God’s behalf. Knowing he was weak but God was strong made David brave. And it will also make Christians and churches brave as we simultane- ously embrace our brokenness and pursue God’s glory. WaytoBrave.indd 100 12/20/17 4:04 PM Chapter 5 crucible and character It is doubtful whether God can bless a man greatly until He has hurt him deeply.

And the Seattle-area band, still led by sisters Ann (vocals) and Nancy (guitar) Wilson, is showing no signs of slowing down. Their 16th studio album, Beautiful Broken, which collects newly composed songs and re-recorded deep tracks from their past, is out now, and on July 14th, the group embarks on the Rock Hall Three for All tour, headlining sheds across the U.S. with support from fellow Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Joan Jett and the Blackhearts and Cheap Trick. And just what is it that keeps them motivated? "I like playing," Nancy says with a laugh. "Guitar ... on a loud rock stage ... with colored lights. Everything sounds better with colored lights!" According to Ann, that passion – as well as the strong familial bond she shares with Nancy – has been instrumental to sustaining the band. "No matter what else is going on in the other parts of our lives, when we play together we always communicate just the same way we did as when we were little kids," she explains. "And now we're in our sixties – we're like grown-up women.

  • Remembering Boston by Pam Healey the Boston Marathon Is Personal
The SOFT Times Support Organization for Trisomy 18, 13 and Related Disorders May/June/July 2013 SOFT dedicates this issue to the City of Boston, the victims of the tragedy, the runners, first responders, spectators, citizens and all those affected. We extend our prayers for healing during this difficult time. Remembering Boston By Pam Healey The Boston Marathon is personal. Patriots Day is personal. I awaken every third Monday in April to the sound of muskets on the nearby battle green. I awaken and remember blood was spilled in 1775. Ordinary people began what gave us our freedom. This Patriots Day blood was spilled again by ordinary people. Again, we stand united. Those who are not runners may not understand the motivation to run 26.2 miles through eight towns on an often too warm April day, Patriots Day. They do not understand the 50-80 mile weeks that constitute training, for months, in all kinds of weather. Although Boston was once a goal, I remained a middle distance runner and never a competitor. Michael ran Boston. My Texan nephew ran Boston. Many of my friends and colleagues ran Boston, some very well. At my first school, where I did my practicum, from our classrooms we cheered a teacher, “Johnny Kelly the younger,” who won ten years ear- lier, and his protege, a recent graduate, Amby Burfoot, who would win the next year. Boston is tradition: 117 years of it. It is our party on our state holiday! At the Boston conference in 2001 a mini Boston marathon course was set up in an empty parking lot and families walked the course pushing wheelchairs, and earned ribbons.

Praise for Find Your Soul’s Purpose “One of the most exquisitely beautiful and eloquent spiritual guidebooks I have ever read! Janet Conner’s clear, concise, elegant, writing is—as always—immensely readable, and deeply engaging. I applaud her efforts and enthusiastically recommend this magnificent book!!!” —Ramananda John E. Welshons, author of One Soul, One Love, One Heart “Here’s the secret to Janet Conner’s wonderful new book: your soul’s purpose is you at this very moment. The sacred path she offers you doesn’t lead to your soul’s purpose; rather each step is your soul’s purpose. She isn’t teaching something you don’t know, but pointing out the simple truths you have forgotten how to see. Don’t think—look!” —Rabbi Rami Shapiro, author of Perennial Wisdom for the Spiritually Independent “Janet Conner weaves together knowledge of narrative, angels, spirals, numerology, astrology, and a host of spiritual insights to help readers find their purpose by recognizing their authen- tic story, providing examples from her own life as well as from others that illustrate the principles shared. Information on such topics is applied in a series of complex active imagination expe- riences, each of which provides guidance for a particular spiral journey.” —Carol S.
