(Bill) WILLIAMS 1945-66 BRIAN LEWIS 1967-97 FOREWORD IN THE FOLLOWING PAGES an effort has been made to collate the records of the Sandy Bay Football Club from its inception, and renew acquaintances with all the great players who have worn the Club’s Blue and White Guernsey. Months of research have resulted in the compilation of this comprehensive record, and if perchance some name or names or facts have been omitted the writers offers their apologies. During the years of the Second World War and particularly 1942-43 seeds were sown for the introduction of district football in Hobart and sub- urbs. Many were sceptical of the success, but it was obvious that now was the time to implement the scheme if district football was to succeed. The big barrier was the breaking of old club ties, but with the suspension of League football during the war years and the retirement of most of the pre- war champions the powers that be decided in favour of the new scheme. In 1945 we saw four district Clubs provide the football namely Sandy Bay, North Hobart, New Town and Hobart. In 1947 Clarence and New Norfolk were admitted to the competition. The teams remained unchanged until 1986 when East and North Launceston were admitted. In 1987 the Burnie Hawks and the Devonport Blues were also admitted to form a Statewide League. The number of teams remained the same until the 1994 season when Launceston was admitted, thus creating a bye. No further change occurred until 1997 when all teams handed in their licenses and unfortu- nately the rest is history.

    TROLLEYBUS TRIBULATIONS Presenters: Craig Tooke (MTPA), Bruce Dale (THS) & Peter Beale (WTM) Trolleybus preservation seems to be well established in New Zealand and various museums in Australia have vehicles stored in varying states of preservation. However actual operation of the vehicles only occurs at Ferrymead in Christchurch. (noting occasional historic operation on the streets in Wellington). What are the prospects for operation in Australia? Could a national trolleybus museum be established operating vehicles currently held by the various tramway museums? Where should it be located? Is is a COTMA function to facilitate this? Following a short video presentation, Bruce Dale opened by supplying the following synopsis of the situation at Ferrymead. • Trolley Bus preservation in Christchurch happened as part of' a long term vision to have all forms of urban transport - horse, steam and electric trams, cable car, trolley and diesel buses - preserved on one site. • In 1966 I happened to be working for a transport Company that had the body of English Electric trolley bus No 210 that they planned to turn into a staff mess room. Fortunately for us, this never happened. • With the donation of 210, the Society mounted an all our effort to acquire the ancillary equipment needed to make a trolley bus system operable. • Jointly with the Wellington Tramway Museum, we put in a tender for the entire New Plymouth trolley bus system. This included the overhead, trolley buses and ancillary equipment. The project was to be self funded from the sale of half the overhead, the rest to be split between the two museums.

    New Zealand Journal of History, 51, 1 (2017) Colonial Helpmeets, Carnival Queens and Beauty Contestants MULTIPLE FEMININITIES IN TWENTIETH-CENTURY NEW ZEALAND IN LATE 1947, as Christian Dior’s ‘new look’ brought glamour and controversy to the catwalks of Paris, a writer for the Auckland Star suggested that what New Zealand needed was a little more homespun. ‘Cyrano’ thought it was time to hold a Mrs New Zealand contest, a quest that would allow the country to honour ‘a representative of the army of women who have been running a home and bringing up a family amid all the trials of the last few years — the personal anxieties of the war, the queues and shortages, the cuts and carryings, and the host of regulations framed and administered almost entirely by men’. The key quality such a woman required: ‘staying power’.1 The woman Cyrano wanted to celebrate was a direct descendant of the colonial helpmeet, that paragon of domesticity, virtue and stability brought to life by Raewyn Dalziel in her classic article of that name.2 In ‘Helpmeet’, Dalziel provided an explanation for why, having acquired the vote, New Zealand women did not go on to achieve other ‘feminist firsts’. Her central thesis was that New Zealand women did not campaign for suffrage so that they could go out and change the world, but rather so that they could preserve the home and their status within it. Nineteenth-century migrants, she argued, brought a Victorian conception of true womanhood with them to New Zealand, which, ‘combined with the special circumstances of colonial

Mr Searle and his wife Florence had three sons and a daughter, all of whom were keen on sport. The boys played junior rugby at the Waitemata Rugby Club. The oldest son, Stuart, also showed considerable promise as an athlete at school. But there was no athletic club west of Henderson township in those days, the early 1950’s. So on 29th September 1952 Mr Searle held a public meeting at the YMCA Hall in Great North Road, Henderson with a proposal to form an athletic club based in Henderson. After a positive response at the meeting it was decided to form an athletic club and call it the Waitemata Amateur Athletic Club adopting the red, green and black colours of the Waitemata Rugby Club. At the club’s first executive meeting on 3rd October 1952, Mr Searle spoke about the advantages of the Club having a ground of its own. It was agreed to begin negotiations to rent, with a view to purchasing a property in Henderson known as Becrofts Orchard and owned by the Orange Hall Society. At a special general meeting held on 16th February 1953, an agreement was submitted by the Orange Hall Society regarding the purchase of the property in Rata Street.

Tamatea Ariki Nui, the captain of Tākitimu, settled in Tauranga, and is buried on top of Mauao, called Mount Maunganui today. Tamatea Ariki Nui had a son called Rongokako, and he had a son called Tamatea Pokai Whenua Pokai Moana, which means “Tamatea explorer of land and sea.” It is from Tamatea Pokai Whenua Pokai Moana that we have the longest place name, located at Porongahau – “Taumatawhakatangihangakōauauatamateaturipukakapikimaungahoronuku pokaiwhenuakitānatahu” where Tamatea Pokai Whenua Pokai Moana played a flute to his lover. It is the son of Tamatea Pokai Whenua Pokai Moana named Kahungunu that Ngāti Kahungunu comes from. Kahungunu travelled widely and eventually settled on the East Coast. His grandson Rakaihikuroa, migrated with his son Taraia, their families and followers, from Nukutaurua on the Māhia Peninsula to Heretaunga (Hawke’s Bay area). Eventually, Heretaunga was brought under the control of his people, who became the first Ngāti Kahungunu as we know it today in Hawke’s Bay.

Published in the Timaru Herald 9 December 2017 Samuel Gibbings HAWKES No.5861 AIF By Teresa Scott Samuel Gibbings Hawkes, born on 14 September 1873 in Dunedin, was the third son of Richard Neville Nettles and Jean (née Black) Hawkes who had come to New Zealand from Australia in the late 1860s. Samuel was educated at Arthur Street School in central Dunedin and then the Normal School, Dunedin. In 1886 at Arthur Street Samuel was the recipient of two prizes – for first place in Standard IV Boys and first place in mental arithmetic. These awards were presented by Sir Robert Stout, a Scotsman who championed education in early New Zealand. The following year at the Normal School Samuel received an award for Standard V Class I. While employed as a clerk in Dunedin, Mr S. G. Hawkes was one of the players who participated in a novel chess match. Mr J. Edwards (ex-champion of New Zealand and Otago) played simultaneously ten matches against ten distinct players. Within one hour and a quarter Mr Edwards had won eight games, drawn one and lost one. Samuel was among the losers. A few weeks later (August 1905) he competed in a series of friendly matches to “determine the best player among habitues of the chess room” at the Dunedin Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute. Samuel’s father died in 1900 in Dunedin and some years later his mother moved to Timaru where his brother Richard and sister, Mrs A.
