A Northern Football Association was formed in 1882, comprising Launceston (the oldest club in Tasmania), Longford and City clubs, but was short lived. However, the idea of inter-colonial and North versus South matches had already been introduced (in 1881 and 1883 respectively). The Northern Tasmanian Football Association (NTFA) was formed on 16 April 1886 with two senior teams, Launceston and City, and nine junior teams, Longford Juniors, Second Launceston, Second City, Inveresk, Britannia, Alberts, Orpheus, Union Firsts, and United Templars. The number, names and fortunes of the teams subsequently varied. In the late 1890s football in Tasmania was at a low ebb and to assist the game in the North, the NTFA's administration was taken over by the Northern Tasmanian Cricket Association from 1900 to 1914. By 1925, the NTFA included only Launceston, City and North Launceston. Longford joined as a senior team in 1926, and Scottsdale and East Launceston (formerly known as Cornwall) in 1948. By 1962 there were four 'city' teams (North Launceston, Launceston, East Launceston and City- South) and two 'country' teams (Longford and Scottsdale), although George Town and Deloraine were admitted in 1984. The NTFA celebrated its centenary in 1986, but folded shortly afterwards. Issues contributing to its demise included changing social patterns, decline in match attendance figures, financial difficulties, pressures associated with VFL and Statewide football competitions, state and national control, and regional protectiveness. The collection was donated to the Queen Victoria Museum and Art Gallery in May 1995, with additional material added in 2015 and 2016. Media Release Attention: Sports Editors, Football Writers and Broadcasters Date: Tuesday, 18 May 2010 Subject: Great Club for 2010 announced – Hobart / Cananore to be recognized. EMBARGOED UNTIL – 11am TODAY AFL Tasmania board member, Scott Wade, has announced today at TCA Ground (Hobart) that the great Club selected for induction into the Tasmanian Football Hall of Fame in 2010 is the Hobart and Cananore Football Clubs. Football in the city of Hobart has its origins in the early 1840s, but became formalised in the latter half of the 19 th century when Clubs first started to emerge. The Club that was to become what is known as Hobart today has arguably enjoyed the most colourful history of any Club in Tasmania. Prior to World War Two the dominant Club in Tasmanian football was ‘Cananore’ which is indisputably the Club we now know as Hobart. Both Clubs have shared the same colours, ground and players. While we know the origins of the name Hobart are founded on the desire of the TFL to have district football after WW2, the origins of the name Cananore are far more exotic. Cannanore was the British name of a district in India in the 19 th century which is now called by the Hindi ‘Kannur’. The district was an important port on the Arabian Sea and the British military headquarters on India's west coast until 1887. Legend has it that one of the founders of the Cananore Football Club in Hobart in the early 1900s chose the name as they had been based there in earlier years and had brought home a incorrectly spelt name plaque which adorned the entry to a building at which many supporters of the new Club met.
