On the Medieval Urban Economy in Wallachia
iANALELE ŞTIIN łIFICE ALE UNIVERSIT Ăł II „ALEXANDRU IOAN CUZA” DIN IA ŞI Tomul LVI Ştiin Ńe Economice 2009 ON THE MEDIEVAL URBAN ECONOMY IN WALLACHIA Lauren Ńiu R ĂDVAN * Abstract The present study focuses on the background of the medieval urban economy in Wallachia. Townspeople earned most of their income through trade. Acting as middlemen in the trade between the Levant and Central Europe, the merchants in Br ăila, Târgovi şte, Câmpulung, Bucure şti or Târg şor became involved in trading goods that were local or had been brought from beyond the Carpathians or the Black Sea. Raw materials were the goods of choice, and Wallachia had vast amounts of them: salt, cereals, livestock or animal products, skins, wax, honey; mostly imported were expensive cloth or finer goods, much sought after by the local rulers and boyars. An analysis of the documents indicates that crafts were only secondary, witness the many raw goods imported: fine cloth (brought specifically from Flanders), weapons, tools. Products gained by practicing various crafts were sold, covering the food and clothing demand for townspeople and the rural population. As was the case with Moldavia, Wallachia stood out by its vintage wine, most of it coming from vineyards neighbouring towns. The study also deals with the ethnicity of the merchants present on the Wallachia market. Tradesmen from local towns were joined by numerous Transylvanians (Bra şov, Sibiu), but also Balkans (Ragussa) or Poles (Lviv). The Transylvanian ones enjoyed some privileges, such as tax exemptions or reduced customs duties. Key words: regional history; medieval trade; charters of privilege; merchants; craftsmen; Wallachia JEL classification: N93 1. -

Partidele Parlamentare Si Problema Comunismului Intern Si Extern În Adunarea Deputatilor
PARTIDELE PARLAMENTARE ŞI PROBLEMA COMUNISMULUI INTERN ŞI EXTERN ÎN ADUNAREA DEPUTAŢILOR (1919-1924) La sfârşitul Primului Război Mondial, România se învecina cu Rusia Sovietică, singura ţară comunistă din lume la acea vreme. Între cele două state exista o situaţie tensionată. -

In a brief article of 1993, Lucian Boia outlined the destinies of some Western models which had come in contact with the Romanian culture; a Belgian model, seen as an appendage of the French, an English one, which in his opinion was completely marginal, and others that enjoyed a more or less brilliant fate (German, Italian, etc.) 1. Please note that each of the topics mentioned above enjoyed special attention in Romanian historiography; see for instance the studies authored by Aurel Filimon, Gheorghe Platon and even my own, dedicated to the Romanian- Belgian relations; those by Dan Berindei, Pompiliu Eliade, Nicolae Iorga and Nicolae Isar for the French case; those by Zigu Ornea regarding the German influences on the political and literary thought of the Junimea group; those by Eugen Denize and George L ăzărescu, on the cultural and political interferences between Italy and Romania, etc. -

This paper proposes that while Moldavian initially demonized and Ottomans and their rule, their attitude changed during the reign of Suleyman the Magnificent and they were integrated in the Ottoman political system. Key Words: Romania, Moldavia, Ottoman Empire, Medieval, Historiography Özet: On beşinci yüzyılın ortalarından 1878 yılına kadar Osmanlı Devleti hâkimiyetinde kalan Romanyalılar Osmanlı sultanına olan yaklaşımlarını belirlemek zorunda kalmışlardı. Conference Report
WORKSHOP Women’s Writing and the East-West Connections within Europe: Visualizing the Channels Spiru Haret University, Bucharest 25-28 April 2012 The workshop Women’s Writing and the East-West Connections within Europe: Visualizing the Channels took place on 25-28 April 2012, in Bucharest, at Spiru Haret University, organized by the Central Research Institute. As was announced in the Call for Papers, the workshop aimed at “reflecting on what kind of factors (Increasing travelling possibilities? Need for money? Increasing education? Feminism? Political developments? Growing curiosity?) were at stake when women put themselves to writing, publishing and entering into contact with readers.” On the technological level, the concept of Visualizing covered the terms of “maps, trees, graphs” (cf. Moretti) in showing influences going from West to East and vice versa, making visible proportions and percentages and illustrating influences exerted by a work, an author, a group of authors. Being a member of Group 4 within the COST project, Ramona Mihaila tried to disseminate information concerning the workshop in Bucharest and she sent invitations to Romanian institutions of higher education, to the Romanian Academy, to other foreign institutions and she promoted the event with posters (see poster), flyers, announcements in print media (see www.opinianationala.ro ), a radio clip (H2.FM), a video clip broadcasted on national TV channels (Etalon TV) and the university channel (see http://centralresearchinstitute.weebly.com/evenimente-iccs.html ). The workshop also had media partners, the television channels H2O, Etalon TV that recorded the presentations delivered by the participants and interviewed professor Suzan van Dijk, the director of the COST project, and associate professor Ramona Mihaila, the organizer, (see the interview: http://centralresearchinstitute.weebly.com/evenimente-iccs.html ) The workshop was organized into seven sessions dedicated only to the members of the project, two workshops focused on database tools, and a keynote presentation.
