A Message from the Principal

Greetings Shaker Families, This week, we started emailing daily announcements directly to our students' Shaker gmail accounts. Please remind your child to check email on a daily basis. In addition, the announcements are posted outside the main office, in the upper cafeteria, and on Shaker.org. They are also announced over the PA, at the end of 2nd period, on our Regular Bell Schedule days (unless testing is scheduled during this time).

Next week, on Tuesday, September 26, Counselors will meet with their 10th grade students, during Biology classes, to discuss "Keys to Success" at SHHS. These small-group discussions will include time management, study skills, and the importance of participating in extra-curricular activities. They will also talk about conferences, study circles, and the new process to meet with Counselors. Finally, our Counselors will introduce Naviance, and discuss other tools, such as the Career Cluster Finder and Mind-Set Surveys.

Also next week, please check your home mailbox for instructions on how to schedule your Parent-Teacher Conferences. Conferences will be held October 16 & 17, and online scheduling will begin for all on Friday, September 29.

Last, but not least, I hope everybody is ready for a fun-filled Homecoming weekend! There are a variety of exciting events planned for adults, students, and the entire family. I look forward to seeing everybody there!

Message from SHHS PTO Co-Presidents Happy 100th Homecoming Shaker! We want to say a big thank you to all of the parents who helped pass out donuts to our students this morning to kick off Spirit Day! What a sweet way to end Spirit Week and kick off Homecoming Weekend!

We hope to see you at the many fun events for Shaker's Homecoming Weekend, many of which are at the high school. Check them all out online.

And please, as you prepare your student for a fun & safe dance on Saturday night, please review the important information the school has sent and talk to your teens before the dance (you may find some helpful insights in this article from Your Teen Magazine).

Our Facebook recommendation this week is the new Shaker Heights Schools Art Page - a chance to peek at the creative work our students are doing.

Questions/comments/suggestions? Let us know!

Wishing you all a safe and happy Homecoming! Thank you, Shaker families! Lisa Hamilton & Lisa Vahey Did You Know..? Some courses have changed names since the introduction of IB to Shaker. English is now called Language and Literature and includes both language development (writing, grammar, vocabulary, etc.) and literature (the texts that are read).

World Languages are now called Language Acquisition because the student is acquiring a second language! We intend for students to become fluent, thus acquiring a second language.

Social Studies is now called Individuals and Societies which is much broader and inclusive than Social Studies. It includes everything from social studies and humanities, to economics and geography. We examine the impact of individuals and their societal context!

Save the Dates for Parent Teacher Conferences Monday, October 16 - Afternoon & Evening (12:00 pm - 8:00 pm) Tuesday, October 17 - All Day (8:00 am - 4:00 pm)

Parents may schedule conferences via an online portal; instructions will be mailed home the week of September 25. Parents notified of priority meetings, per teachers' requests, will receive information to start scheduling on Wednesday September 27. All parents may begin scheduling conferences on Friday, September 29

Homecoming Dance The Homecoming Dance will take place on September 23rd, from 8-11 pm in the north gymnasium. The theme for this year's dance is 'Shaker 100', as we celebrate the special Homecoming events! No Homecoming dance tickets will be sold at the door. To ensure that all students experience a safe and enjoyable Homecoming dance, we will use breathalyzers as one aspect of our overall comprehensive plan to educate students about the dangers of underage drinking and to prevent student consumption of alcohol prior to the event. The purpose of this message is to alert students and parents that breathalyzers will be administered to all students attending the Homecoming dance and to ensure positive and healthy choices prior to the event. At the entrance to the dance, High School administrators will administer the breathalyzer to each student. Any student receiving a positive result (noting the presence of alcohol) will be taken to a secondary location where the local police and the parent/guardian will be contacted. Per our existing protocol, students with positive results will be given a school consequence and turned over to the local law enforcement agency. Please contact your child's Assistant Principal with any questions.

Please contact Mr. Bartley with any questions.

Shaker Crew wins Gold, Beats Penn State, Three Other Colleges at Head of Cuyahoga Regatta Shaker Heights Crew Varsity Girl's Four accomplished something unique this weekend at the 22nd Annual Head of the Cuyahoga Regatta. The Shaker boat finished first in the Open Women's Four event, ahead of 11 other entries, including Penn State, Miami, Ohio, and John Carroll Universities. Shaker rowed the 5000-meter course in 18:36, ten seconds ahead of the second place boat.

Seniors Gen Fortin and Olivia Whittier and Juniors Sophie Calabrese and Jenna Cahn rowed the victorious Shaker boat. Senior Casey Lewis coxed the gold medal boat. This same lineup rowed in the Scholastic National Championship semi-finals last spring.

" U.S. Rowing Association rules allow all comers to enter an Open event in this fall regatta," explained Shaker Head Coach Bob Valerian. "I thought it would motivate the girls to row against college competition, and obviously it did. I'm guessing it's the first time a Shaker team has ever beaten a Big Ten school in head-to-head competition."

Shaker won a second gold medal in the Junior Women's single sculls when Sophie Calabrese crossed the finish line with a time of 21:10. Sophie led second place Dayton Boat Club by 39 seconds and was more than three minutes ahead of third place North Allegheny High School. Sophie will be rowing the single in the prestigious Head of the Charles Regatta in Boston on October 22.

Two Shaker Boy's crews just missed the medal stand. Shaker's Boy's Open Novice Eight and Varsity Lightweight Four, both finished fourth in their events. Also turning in good performances in their events were Shaker's Boy's Novice Eight (eighth out of 17 entries), the Girl's JV Four (sixth of 22 entries) and Shaker's Novice Girl's Four (fifth of 18 entries).

Coach Valerian had praise for the Shaker Novice rowers. "Many of these kids had never even seen a racing shell before they started training a month ago. They have worked hard, learned well and gave a good account of themselves in their first races on Saturday."

The Crew next races at the Head of the Ohio Regatta in Pittsburgh on October 8th.
