A Message from the Principal

Greetings Shaker Families,

It was great to see so many of you at Curriculum Night last week. I would like to share some information that was presented and displayed that evening, for you to review, at your convenience:

We have NEW attendance rules, based on NEW state law, for the 2017-2018 school year. Please review these guidelines so that you and your child can plan accordingly. Shaker students continue to exhibit excellence in a variety of academic assessments and endeavors, including the ACT, AP, IB and State Mandated End of Course Exams. Here are some of SHHS academic highlights. We also have new graduation requirements for the class of 2018. At this point, these requirements are only for the class of 2018. If your child is part of this cohort, please review this presentation.

Monday, September 18, is the deadline for current Juniors to register for the PSAT/NMSQT. This is the test that qualifies students for consideration as National Merit Scholars, and, while it is optional, we encourage all Juniors to participate. Fee waivers are available for families in need. Please contact your School Counselor to register.

Outside guest forms are available in the main office and the senior lounge. To ensure that all students experience a safe and enjoyable Homecoming dance, we will use breathalyzers as one aspect of our overall comprehensive plan to educate students about the dangers of underage drinking and to prevent student consumption of alcohol prior to the event. The purpose of this message is to alert students and parents that breathalyzers will be administered to all students attending the Homecoming dance and to ensure positive and healthy choices prior to the event. At the entrance to the dance, High School administrators will administer the breathalyzer to each student. Any student receiving a positive result (noting the presence of alcohol) will be taken to a secondary location where the local police and the parent/guardian will be contacted. Per our existing protocol, students with positive results will be given a school consequence and turned over to the local law enforcement agency. Please contact your child's Assistant Principal with any questions.

A Message from the PTO Council President The successes and the history of accomplishments of our Shaker School District is shown strongly in our Shaker Pride. There are many residents that have moved away and returned to our beautiful city to raise their families because of the experiences they had in our district. The number of faculty and staff that attended school here as students is great as well. We love our schools! This can be seen all over streets as cars proudly sport a neighborhood school's car magnet. My own children take great enjoyment in wearing their old clap out shirts and school spirit apparel. The PTO works hard to design, order, and stock unique spirit wear with styles for the whole family. Each school has its own spirit days, but it is that time of the year when we all come together to show our love and support for Shaker. There are two great events - Red Raider Day on September 16th and Homecoming on September 23rd - where our awesome colors of red and white will be on full display! If you need spirit wear, please contact the PTO at your school to order some for you and your student so you will have it to wear throughout the year at school events or anytime you want to express your Shaker Pride!
