März 1942 in Memphis (Tennessee) geboren. "Think " is the name of a hit single released by American R&B/soul musician Aretha Franklin in 1968, from her Aretha Now album. The song, a feminist anthem, reached No. 7 on Billboard Pop Singles Chart, becoming Franklin's seventh Top 10 hit in the United States. The song also reached No. 1 on the magazine's Black Singles Chart,[1] becoming her sixth single to top the chart. The song was written by Franklin and Ted White. Franklin re-recorded the song in 1989 for the album "Through the Storm ". http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Think_%28Aretha_Franklin_song%29 Quelle: Bildungsserver Sachsen-Anhalt (http://www.bildung-lsa.de) | Lizenz: Creative Commons (CC BY-NC-SA 3.0) Harald Weißling, Jena, April 2011 Anglistisches Seminar der Universität Heidelberg Film: By the People (24.42) Why I am running Listen to Obama’s speech and fill in the missing key words you will hear. I am running in this race because of what Dr. King called the “fierce urgency of now.” I believe the American people are tired of fear and tired of distractions and tired of diversions. We can make this election not about fear, but about the future. And that won’t just be a Democratic victory. That will be an American victory. SOCI 360 SociAL Movements And Community Change Professor Kurt Reymers, Ph.D. sociology.morrisville.edu You better think (think) Artist: Aretha Franklin Think about what you’re tryin’ to do to me Yeah think (think, think) Song: Think Let your mind go, let yourself be free… Album: Aretha Now (1968) Oh freedom (freedom) THEME: “Thought=Choice=Freedom” Let’s have some freedom (freedom) Oh freedom Yeah freedom (yeah) You need me, I need you Without each other there ain’t nothing we can do You got to have freedom (freedom) Oh freedom (freedom) You need some freedom Oh freedom You got to have Hey! think about it You! think about it 1 K. Social Movement Leaders 1. Orienting Questions: • What social processes are involved in the emergence of leaders in social movements? • What social factors– all apart from personality and leadership style – affect the likelihood that one or another person is elevated to that position? • How do leaders gain legitimate authority in social movements once they attain that position? • Is leadership democratic, autocratic, charismatic? • What are the different types of functional roles that leaders fill? • Are their different levels of leadership, each with specific goals and spheres of influence? • How are differences in opinion over goals, tactics, and overall strategy – which invariably occur – managed? K. Social Movement Leaders 2. a. Leaders are critical to social movements, because they: • inspire commitment, • mobilize resources, • create and recognize opportunities, • devise strategies frame demands, and • influence outcomes. Any approach to leadership in social movements must examine the actions of leaders within structural contexts that both limit and facilitate opportunities, recognize the different levels of leadership, and understand the various functional roles filled by different types of movement leaders at different stages in movement development.

AES Pacific NW Section Meeting Notice Around the Puget Sound, Seattle, Washington, U.S.A. AES PNW Meeting Notice By special arrangement with Palm Pictures A film documentary Tom Dowd and The Language of Music September 30, 2004, 7:30pm Shoreline Community College, Room 818 (music building) Every so often a commercial film arrives which shows the magic, art, and science behind what many of us love to do: audio for music. The most recent entry in this category enchanted a number of members of the Committee, and the PNW Section invites you to join us for a special showing of the video of the film: Tom Dowd & the Language Of Music. http://www.aes.org/sections/pnw/index-pf.htm (1 of 3) [10/1/2004 1:17:35 AM] AES Pacific NW Section Meeting Notice Tom Dowd was born in 1925 to musical parents. While pursuing a degree in Nuclear Physics at Columbia University, he ended up working for the US Army Corps of Engineers on what came to be known as the Manhattan Project, whose responsibility was the development of the first atomic bombs. After the war, security concerns and red tape created a no-win situation: finishing his degree was pointless. A summer job after the war led to a career in the music business. He cut his first record in 1947 at the age of 22. He remained active in the business until shortly before his death at age 77. Early on, Dowd met the Ertegun brothers, Ahmet and Nesuhi. The Ertegun brothers had a record label, Atlantic Records, and they had the good sense and timing to hire Dowd and Jerry Wexler.

  • Great Voices; an In-Depth Look at Six Iconic Rock and R&B Singers”
Spring 2018, OLLI Cal: Tuesdays, 10-12 “Great Voices; an in-depth look at six iconic rock and r&b singers” Throughout the rich, long arc of popular music there has always existed the great singer, the individual who elevates the great song to another dimension, a place where, as listeners, we are thrilled and inspired for the rest of our lives when we hear their work. This course will cover the lives and careers of six legendary rock and r&b singers from the period 1955-75, five Americans and one Irish singer whose work has embodied American roots music. Although all of them are also known as songwriters and performers, they made their mark as vocalists, who could rock our socks off one minute, while with the next breath cajole the sweetest melodies from the material they so passionately tackled. Taught chronologically, the six classes will be presented as a cultural and musical journey through the amazing lives and work of these artists when they were at the forefront of popular music. The course will do this through several media: lectures, slide shows, photographs, recorded music, film clips and the use of live music. The instructor will play piano, guitar and sing, and will choose appropriate examples from each genre to perform in class. In this class we will cover: The “Genius,” Ray Charles The “King of Soul,” Sam Cooke The “Voice,” Roy Orbison The “The White Queen of Soul." Dusty Springfield The “Big O,” Otis Redding The “Queen of Soul,” Aretha Franklin * * * Suggested reading, listening, viewing Week One; Ray Charles Brother Ray:

  • ARETHA, QUEEN of SOUL Victory!! John Glassburner, Host of KLCC's
ARETHA, QUEEN OF SOUL Victory!! John Glassburner, host of KLCC's Straight Street, can claim victory in his campaign to have the word "Aretha" added to Microsoft Word's Spell Check. His quest began in November, 1998, and involved attempted contact with Bill Gates and the support of Congressman Peter DeFazio. In January, 1999, Microsoft responded and agreed to "...endeavor to do our best to include it (Aretha's name) in a future release of Microsoft Office..." One passionate fan (with the help of his Congressman) has made a difference!! The world is a slightly better place! Follow the journey below. INTRODUCTION TO STRAIGHT STREET, November, 1998: Good evening and welcome to Straight Street, where the best in Rhythm & Blues, gospel, and soul music reside. I'm John Glassburner, your host for the next two hours. I have a little story to tell you, my friend, a true story: After years of preparing for Straight Street with a legal pad and a black, fine-point pen, I have just recently begun making program notes on my computer. One cool feature my word processor program has, is this spell-check deal where a little squiggly red line appears under misspelled words, and then if you right-click on it, it gives you suggestions for correct spellings --a great feature for spelling-challenged people like myself . Well, yesterday I was working on a piece, which I'm going to do later in the show, which refers to Little Richard's classic tune "Tutti Frutti", and my computer indicated that both words were misspelled.
